Beschreibung: A Holzapfel-type diamond anvil cell is used to determine the NH3 - H2O phase diagram in the region from 0 to 33 mole percent NH3, 240 to 370 K, and 0 to 5 GPa. The following phases were identified: liquid; water ices Ih, III, V, VI, VII, and VIII; ammonia monohydrate, NH3.H2O; and ammonia dihydrate NH3.2H2O. Ammonia dihydrate becomes prominent at moderate pressures (less than 1 GPa), with planetologically significant implications, including the possibility of layering in Titan's magma ocean.

Beschreibung: The response time of an ampoule failure sensor exposed to a liquid or vapor gallium-arsenide (GaAs) and the corresponding breach time of the containing cartridge is investigated. The experiments were conducted in niobium-hafnium (WC-103) cartridges with an exterior silicide coating. These cartridges were built to flight specifications that were used in NASA's Crystal Growth Furnace during the first United States Microgravity Laboratory (USML-1) mission. The ampoule failure sensor is a chemical fuse made from a metal with which the semiconductor material reacts more rapidly than it does with the containing cartridge. In these experiments a platinum metal was used for the manufacture of the sensors. This technical report discusses the response time of two different sensor designs. The first design utilizes a helical wrapped wire and the second uses a single bare wire element. Experimental results indicate that both sensors are adequate in sensing the presence of molten or vapor GaAs with the latter having a 2-minute longer response time. In both experiments, the containing cartridge was breached within 185 minutes after ampoule rupture.

Beschreibung: A complete numerical solution is obtained for plane wave propagation in a variable-area duct which carries a mean compressible flow. The equation solved is a matrix formulation of the equations first derived by Tsien in 1952. Sample calculations are presented for four particular flow configurations: (1) a duct-nozzle-duct combination with the acoustic wave traveling with the flow, (2) a duct-nozzle-duct combination with the acoustic wave traveling against the flow, (3) an inlet-nozzle-duct configuration with the acoustic wave traveling against the flow, and (4) a duct-nozzle-exit configuration with the acoustic wave traveling with the flow. For each of these cases, the variation of energy flux with frequency is shown for particular geometry and flow condition.

Beschreibung: Phase boundaries of the H2O-NH3 system for (NH3)/x/(H2O)/1-x/ have been determined with diamond-anvil cells for mixtures in two composition ranges: (1) for x in the range from 0 to 0.3, at pressures up to 4 GPa at 21 C, and (2) for x in the range from 0.46 to 0.50, at pressures up to 5 GPa from 150 to 400 K. Phases were identified visually with a microscope and polarized optics. The NH3.2(H2O) phase is strongly anisotropic with a much smaller refractive index than that of ice VII and cracks in two nonperpendicular networks. NH3.H2O has a refractive index closer to that of Ice VII and does not appear to form cracks. Both phases are colorless. Phase boundaries were determined on both increasing and decreasing pressures, and compositions of the ammonia ices were determined by estimating relative amounts of water and ammonia ices at known overall compositions. For low-ammonia compositions (x equal to or less than 0.15), the following assemblages succedd one another as pressure increases: liquid; liquid and Ice VI (at 1.0 + GPa); liquid and Ice VII (at 2.1 GPa); Ice VII and NH3.H2O (at 3.5 GPa). For x in the range from 0.15 to 0.30, the water ice and liquid fields are replaced by the NH3.2(H2O) and liquid field at pressures down to 1.0 GPa and lower.

Beschreibung: Laboratory simulations are used here to test the possibility that interactions of SO2 and silicates can produce Na-S compounds which can account for the observed surface enrichment of Na relative to Si on Io. It is concluded that there are three viable hypotheses for the nature and origin of the Na compounds on the surface of Io: (1) Na2SO4 from SO2-silicate interactions, (2) Na-sulfides from elemental S, silicate interactions, and (3) directly erupted volcanic Na. The present studies indicate the elemental Si is not required to form Na compounds in crustal igneous interactions. Thus, the presence of Na compounds provides no constraint on elemental S but igneous formation of Na-S compounds is not tied to models of Io which contain elemental S.

Beschreibung: A new method for internally heating a diamond-anvil cell is described. Fine wires of iron or tungsten are resistively heated in a gasketed cell, thus providing a uniformly distributed pressure that can be measured in situ by employing the ruby scale. Temperatures of several thousand degrees have been measured by fitting a black body radiation function to the spectrum of the hot wire taken with an optical multichannel analyzer. Temperatures as high as the melting temperature of tungsten have been achieved. The alpha-gamma and alpha-epsilon phase transitions of iron have been studied, and the results show excellent agreement with previous data obtained with piston-cylinder or externally-heated diamond cells.

Beschreibung: Measurements of actinide and light REE (LREE) abundances and of phosphate abundances in equilibrated ordinary chondrites were obtained and were used to define the Pu abundance in the solar system and to determine the degree of variation of actinide and LREE abundances. The results were also used to compare directly the Pu/U ratio with the earlier obtained ratio determined indirectly, as (Pu/Nd)x(Nd/U), assuming that Pu behaves chemically as a LREE. The data, combined with high-accuracy isotope-dilution data from the literature, show that the degree of gram-scale variability of the Th, U, and LREE abundances for equilibrated ordinary chondrites is a factor of 2-3 for absolute abundances and up to 50 percent for relative abundances. The observed variations are interpreted as reflecting the differences in the compositions and/or proportions of solar nebula components accreted to ordinary chondrite parent bodies.

Beschreibung: The applicability of ion microprobe (IMP) for quantitative analysis of minor elements (Sr, Y, Zr, La, Sm, and Yb) in the major phases present in natural Ca-, Al-rich inclusions (CAIs) was investigated by comparing IMP results with those of an electron microprobe (EMP). Results on three trace-element-doped glasses indicated that it is not possible to obtain precise quantitative analysis by using IMP if there are large differences in SiO2 content between the standards used to derive the ion yields and the unknowns.

Beschreibung: The response time of an ampoule failure sensor exposed to a liquid or vapor gallium-arsenide (GaAs) is investigated. The experimental configuration represents the sample/ampoule cartridge assembly used in NASA's Crystal Growth Furnace (CGF). The sensor is a chemical fuse made from a metal with which the semiconductor material reacts more rapidly than it does with the containing cartridge. For the III-IV compound of GaAs, a platinum metal was chosen based on the reaction of platinum and arsenic at elevated temperatures which forms a low melting eutectic. Ampoule failure is indicated by a step change in resistance of the failure sensor on the order of megohms. The sensors will increase the safety of crystal growth experiments by providing an indication that an ampoule has failed. Experimental results indicate that the response times (after a known ampoule failure) for the 0.003 and 0.010 inch ampoule failure sensors are 2.4 and 3.6 minutes, respectively. This ampoule failure sensor will be utilized in the CGF during the second United States Microgravity Laboratory Mission (USML-2) and is the subject of a NASA patent application.
