    Description: The stability properties of radiative shocks in spherically symmetric accretion flows onto white dwarfs is discussed. Accretion rates that result in shock thicknesses ranging from thin to settling solutions are investigated. Models for white dwarf masses from 0.3 to 1.2 of the solar mass are presented. The effects of unequal ion and electron temperatures, electron thermal conduction, bremsstrahlung, and Compton cooling are included. It is shown that thick two-temperature shocks are unstable to oscillations in the fundamental mode for white dwarf mass up to and including 1.0 of the solar mass. The possibility that the 0.3 to 1.0 Hz optical Quasi-Periodic Oscillations (QPOs) observed in four AM Her type cataclysmic binaries are due to the first overtone instability. Low accretion rate shock instabilities may be responsible for the tens of seconds to several minute X-ray QPOs observed in some AM Her objects.

    Description: An optical pulsar with frequency f = 1,968,629 Hz has been detected at the location of supernova 1987A in the LMC. The brightness of the pulsed light increased from magnitude 19 to 18 during a 7-hr observation period starting on 18.1 January 1987 UT. The frequency of the pulsar during this same period varied in a nearly sinusoidal manner, with an amplitude of 1.5 x 10 to the -3rd Hz and a period of 8 hr. If this is interpreted as the result of a binary orbit, it suggests that there may be a Jupiter-size object orbiting the pulsar at a distance of 10 to the 6th km.

    Description: It is shown how the thermal synchrotron emission spectrum is modified when the photon energy is greater than the mean energy of the radiating particles. The effect if applying this energy conservation constraint is to produce spectra which have less high-energy photon emission than had been previously estimated. The thermal synchrotron spectra provide satisfactory fits to recently observed very high energy gamma ray spectra of certain burst sources.

    Description: The X-ray observations of the original AM Her objects (AM Her, VV Pup, EF Eri, and AN UMa are reexamined. The work differs from that carried out previously in that the observed X-ray spectral properties are compared to theoretical models calculated using a dipolar accretion geometry rather than a spherically symmetric one, and the observed X-ray light curves are compared to theoretical light curves calculated assuming that the X-ray sources are cataclysmic variable-like binaries which contain a strongly magnetic white dwarf. The added constraints offered by the light curve properties restrict the possible kinds of X-ray emission scenarios in some cases. For instance, it is found that the X-ray observations of AM Her can be self-consistently explained by accretion powered radiative shock models. Further, the observations cannot be self-consistently explained by conduction dominated models as has been suggested by previous workers.

    Description: Attention is given to the oscillatory instability of optically thin radiative shocks in time-dependent numerical calculations of accretion flows onto degenerate dwarfs. The present nonlinear calculations yield good quantitative agreement with the linear results obtained for oscillation frequencies, damping rates, and critical alpha-values. The fundamental mode and the first overtone in the shock radius and luminosity variations can be clearly identified, and evidence is sometimes seen for the second overtone. Time-dependent calculations are also performed which include additional physics relevant to degenerate dwarf accretion, such as electron thermal conduction, unequal electron and ion temperatures, Compton cooling, and relativistic corrections to the bremsstrahlung cooling law. All oscillatory modes are found to be damped, and hence stable, in the case of a 1-solar mass white dwarf accreting in spherical symmetry.

    Description: Since March 1987 the optical flux from supernova 1987A for periodic pulsations has been sought. As of August 1988, after 38 separate observations, no pulsar has been detected. The typical upper limit placed on the pulsed fraction optical light from the supernova is 0.0002, for pulse frequencies in the range 0.03-5000 Hz. The best limit on the pulsed fraction of supernova light is 7 x 10 to the -6th, on January 22, 1988. On August 28, 1988 the faintest limit for the magnitude of the pulsar, dimmer than 20th mag is reached. These limits are based on Fourier transforms of up to 67 million points, covering a range of spindown rates.

    Description: A search for millisecond optical pulsars in several bright, compact globular clusters was conducted. The sample included M28, and the X-ray clusters 47 Tuc, NGC 6441, NGC 6624, M22, and M15. The globular cluster M28 contains the recently discovered 327 Hz radio pulsar. Upper limits of 4 sigma to pulsed emission of (1-20) solar luminosities were found for the globular clusters tested, and 0.3 solar luminosity for the M28 pulsar for frequencies up to 500 Hz.

    Description: Results are reported from two-temperature calculations of the structures and X-ray spectra of radiation shocks generated by accretion onto nonmagnetic white dwarfs. The approach was necessitated by the domination of bremsstrahlung in the emission region by Compton cooling. Features of the shock model, which includes steady, spherical infall of fully ionized plasma and dominance of the stand-off shock by collisional processes, are summarized. A maximum hard X-ray temperature of about 50 keV and a maximum hard X-ray luminosity of 2 x 10 to the 36th ergs/sec were obtained. The results prove that the bulk of accretion energy cannot be transported to the star by electron thermal conduction, provided that bremsstrahlung cooling is dominant over cyclotron cooling.
