    Description: Worldwide, a growing number of modern coastal marine ecosystems are increasingly exposed to suboxic‐ or even anoxic conditions. Low seawater oxygen levels trigger significant ecosystem changes and may result in mass mortality of oxygen‐sensitive biota. The applicability of observations from recent (anthropogenically influenced) suboxic coastal settings to fossil anoxic shallow‐marine environments is, however, as yet poorly explored. The test case documented here are upper Barremian to lower Aptian strata in the Lusitanian Basin (Ericeira section, Portugal). These are characterized by the transient demise of rudist–coral communities and the rapid establishment of microencruster facies in the vacant ecological niches. The hypothesis is tested that the temporal expansion of the microencrusting organism Lithocodium aggregatum took place in response to platform‐top seawater oxygen depletion. We critically discuss the outcome of a multi‐proxy palaeoseawater redox approach (e.g. Rare Earth Elements (REEs), U isotopes and palaeoecology) and put the robustness of the proxies applied here to the test. This is done by considering issues with these methods in general but also emphasizing the significance of terrigenous contamination and fractionation effects. Data shown here document that evidence for coastal seawater oxygen depletion in the prelude of Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE) 1a is lacking, and hence, anoxia was not the driving mechanism for the demise of rudist–coral ecosystems in the proto‐North Atlantic platform setting studied here. In contrast, well‐oxygenated early Aptian platform‐top water masses are proposed for this site. Geologically short (decades to millennia) fluctuations in seawater oxygen levels cannot be excluded, however. But even if these took place, they offer no explanation for the Kyr to Myr‐scale patterns discussed here. The present paper is relevant as it sheds light on the complexity of mechanisms that drive punctuated Early Cretaceous coral–rudist ecosystem turnover, and assess strengths and weaknesses of redox proxies applied to ancient shallow‐marine platform carbonates.

    Description: We assess redundancy reduction in image coding in terms of the information acquired by the image-gathering process and the amount of data required to convey this information. A clear distinction is made between the theoretically minimum rate of data transmission, as measured by the entropy of the completely decorrelated data, and the actual rate of data transmission, as measured by the entropy of the encoded (incompletely decorrelated) data. It is shown that the information efficiency of the visual communication channel depends not only on the characteristics of the radiance field and the decorrelation algorithm, as is generally perceived, but also on the design of the image-gathering device, as is commonly ignored.

    Description: Multiresponse imaging is a process that acquires A images, each with a different optical response, and reassembles them into a single image with an improved resolution that can approach 1/sq rt A times the photodetector-array sampling lattice. Our goals are to optimize the performance of this process in terms of the resolution and fidelity of the restored image and to assess the amount of information required to do so. The theoretical approach is based on the extension of both image restoration and rate-distortion theories from their traditional realm of signal processing to image processing which includes image gathering and display.

    Description: This assessment of visual communication deals with image gathering, coding, and restoration as a whole rather than as separate and independent tasks. The approach focuses on two mathematical criteria, information and fidelity, and on their relationships to the entropy of the encoded data and to the visual quality of the restored image. Past applications of these criteria to the assessment of image coding and restoration have been limited to the link that connects the output of the image-gathering device to the input of the image-display device. By contrast, the approach presented in this paper explicitly includes the critical limiting factors that constrain image gathering and display. This extension leads to an end-to-end assessment theory of visual communication that combines optical design with digital processing.

    Description: A finer-than-sampling-lattice resolution image can be obtained using multiresponse image gathering and Wiener-matrix restoration. The multiresponse image gathering weighs the within-passband and aliased signal components differently, allowing the Wiener-matrix restoration filter to unscramble these signal components and restore spatial frequencies beyond the sampling passband of the photodetector array. A multiresponse images can be reassembled into a single minimum mean square error image with a resolution that is sq rt A times finer than the photodetector-array sampling lattice.

    Description: In this paper we integrate multiresolution decomposition with image gathering and restoration. This integration leads to a Wiener-matrix filter that accounts for the aliasing, blurring, and noise in image gathering, together with the digital filtering and decimation in signal decomposition. Moreover, as implemented here, the Wiener-matrix filter completely suppresses the blurring and raster effects of the image-display device. We demonstrate that this filter can significantly improve the fidelity and visual quality produced by conventional image reconstruction. The extent of this improvement, in turn, depends on the design of the image-gathering device.

    Description: The proper combination of optical design with image plane processing, as in the mechanism of human vision, which allows to improve the performance of sensor array imaging systems for edge detection and location was examined. Two dimensional bandpass filtering during image formation, optimizes edge enhancement and minimizes data transmission. It permits control of the spatial imaging system response to tradeoff edge enhancement for sensitivity at low light levels. It is shown that most of the information, up to about 94%, is contained in the signal intensity transitions from which the location of edges is determined for raw primal sketches. Shading the lens transmittance to increase depth of field and using a hexagonal instead of square sensor array lattice to decrease sensitivity to edge orientation improves edge information about 10%.

    Description: The fidelity and resolution of the traditional Wiener restorations given in the prevalent digital processing literature can be significantly improved when the transformations between the continuous and discrete representations in image gathering and display are accounted for. However, the visual quality of these improved restorations also is more sensitive to the defects caused by aliasing artifacts, colored noise, and ringing near sharp edges. In this paper, these visual defects are characterized, and methods for suppressing them are presented. It is demonstrated how the visual quality of fidelity-maximized images can be improved when (1) the image-gathering system is specifically designed to enhance the performance of the image-restoration algorithm, and (2) the Wiener filter is combined with interactive Gaussian smoothing, synthetic high edge enhancement, and nonlinear tone-scale transformation. The nonlinear transformation is used primarily to enhance the spatial details that are often obscurred when the normally wide dynamic range of natural radiance fields is compressed into the relatively narrow dynamic range of film and other displays.

    Description: A method for extracting edge primitives from Mach-band patterns is presented together with a method for recovering image representations of features outlined by the edge boundaries. The accuracy, stability, and resolution of these representations are assessed. Since these representations are most commonly used in characterizing targets, this method of low-level processing offers new opportunities for computer vision and high data-compressing coding. Two bandpass filters are considered, the spatially invariant Laplacian of Gaussian filter and spatially variant intensity-dependent spatial (IDS) summation. It is shown that the recovery from the IDS bandpass data is particularly advantageous in applications for which robustness to local and temporal variations in illumination is important. It is concluded that the edge primitives extracted from bandpassed images can be an efficient way to store, transmit, and represent images.
