    Description: Physics-based modeling of hypersonic flows is predicated on the availability of chemical reaction rate coefficients and cross sections for the collisional processes. This approach has been built around the use of quantum mechanical calculations to describe the interaction between the colliding particles. In this approach a potential energy surface (PES) is computed by solving the electronic Schrdinger equation and collision cross sections are determined for that PES using classical, semiclassical or quantum mechanical scattering methods. The rate coefficients are computed by integrating the thermally weighted cross sections. State-to-state rate coefficients are determined by only integrating over a thermal distribution of collisional energies. Finally, thermal rate coefficients are determined by summation of the state-to-state rate coefficients for reactions of molecules in all relevant ro-vibrational energy levels. If the flow is in thermal non-equilibrium, the translational, vibrational and rotational energy modes can be represented in different ways: three unique temperatures can be used to describe the distributions, the populations of individual ro-vibrational energy levels can be determined by solving the Master Equation, or through the use of direct simulation in particle-based Monte Carlo sampling. The PES-to-rate coefficient approach had been proposed and attempted in the early days of digital computing, but it is only in the last 15 years that computer hardware and software have been up to the task of calculating accurate interatomic and intermolecular potentials.

    Description: An experimental study was undertaken to investigate the mechanical response of four hybrid titanium composite laminate (HTCL) systems, each prepared using a graphite fiber reinforced thermoplastic polyimide as the adhesive in a unidirectional prepreg. Two of the four HTCL systems were fabricated with the titanium Ti-15-3 alloy, while the other two systems were fabricated with the titanium Timetal Beta-21S alloy. Each HTCL system consisted of either three plies or four plies of the titanium alloy. Systems with only three plies of titanium had plies measuring 10 mils thick, whereas systems consisting of four plies of titanium had plies measuring 5 mils thick. The improvement in mechanical properties achieved by comparing the uniaxial tensile results of static strength at room temperature. Results included stress-strain curves, ultimate strength, strain-to-failure, initial modulus of the HTCL's, and the description of the observed modes of failure.

    Description: The baby-machine system, which produces new-born Escherichia coli cells from cultures immobilized on a membrane, was developed many years ago in an attempt to attain optimal synchrony with minimal disturbance of steady-state growth. In the present article, we put forward a model to describe the behaviour of cells produced by this method, and provide quantitative evaluation of the parameters involved, at each of four different growth rates. Considering the high level of selection achievable with this technique and the natural dispersion in interdivision times, we believe that the output of the baby machine is probably close to optimal in terms of both quality and persistence of synchrony. We show that considerable information on events in the cell cycle can be obtained from populations with age distributions very much broader than those achieved with the baby machine and differing only modestly from steady state. The data presented here, together with the long and fruitful history of findings employing the baby-machine technique, suggest that minimisation of stress on cells is the single most important factor for successful cell-cycle analysis.

    Description: In 1984 Congress authorized NASA to begin the Space Station Program, and requested that 10 percent of program funds be spent in implementing automation and robotics (A and R) on the Space Station. In response to that request, Boeing established several Independent Research and Development (IR and D) projects to explore possible uses for A and R on the Space Station. One of those projects, and automated materials processing experiment, is discussed. The project uses a teleoperated robot to demonstrate telescience applied to a Chemical Vapor Transport materials processing experiment.

    Description: Ground controlled teleoperations are expected to be used to augment Space Station manned extravehicular activities (EVA) and Intravehicular activities (IVA). However, ground controlled teleoperations will encounter communications time delays of from 3 to 8 secs. Time delays greater than 1 sec have been shown to be detrimental to safe and efficient teleoperations. Therefore, concepts must be developed to overcome the hazards and limitations of time delays when performing teleoperations using robots. The concept for robot motion primitives incorporate force/torque and tactile sensor feedback to implement the degree of autonomy required for interactive, ground controlled telerobotics. Several primitives are studied that augment human initiated actions by providing rapid response interaction with the physical environment of a telerobot. These primitives are detailed. They constitute a level of intelligent sensing and reaction required to augment human actions through autonomous interaction with the physical environment.

    Description: Scalable Coherent Interface (SCI, IEEE/ANSI Std 1596-1992) (SCI1, SCI2) is a high performance interconnect for shared memory multiprocessor systems. In this project we investigate an SCI Real Time Protocols (RTSCI1) using Directed Flow Control Symbols. We studied the issues of efficient generation of control symbols, and created a simulation model of the protocol on a ring-based SCI system. This report presents the results of the study. The project has been implemented using SES/Workbench. The details that follow encompass aspects of both SCI and Flow Control Protocols, as well as the effect of realistic client/server processing delay. The report is organized as follows. Section 2 provides a description of the simulation model. Section 3 describes the protocol implementation details. The next three sections of the report elaborate on the workload, results and conclusions. Appended to the report is a description of the tool, SES/Workbench, used in our simulation, and internal details of our implementation of the protocol.

    Description: Detection of life on Mars requires definition of a suitable biomarker and development of sensitive yet compact instrumentation capable of performing in situ analyses. Our studies are focused on amino acid analysis because amino acids are more resistant to decomposition than other biomolecules, and because amino acid chirality is a well-defined biomarker. Amino acid composition and chirality analysis has been previously demonstrated in the lab using microfabricated capillary electrophoresis (CE) chips. To analyze amino acids in the field, we have developed the Mars Organic Analyzer (MOA), a portable analysis system that consists of a compact instrument and a novel multi-layer CE microchip.
