Description: The goal of the Gas-Grain Simulation Facility project is to provide a microgravity laboratory to facilitate research relevant to exobiology (the study of the origin and evolution of life in the universe). Such a facility will also be useful in other areas of study important to NASA including planetary science, biology, atmospheric science, astrophysics, chemistry, and physics. To achieve this goal, the project will develop and support the GGSF, a modular facility-class payload planned for inclusion on Space Station Freedom. The GGSF will consist of the following: an experiment chamber(s) supported by subsystems that provide chamber environment regulation and monitoring capabilities; sample generation, injection, positioning, and retrieval capabilities; and computer control, data acquisition, and housekeeping capabilities. The facility will also provide analytical tools such as light-scattering measurement systems, aerosol size-spectrum measurement devices, and optical imaging systems.

Description: Three-dimensional flow phenomena in a shrouded inducer were studied with a three-dimensional Navier-Stokes method. The details of the three-dimensional flow structure inside the inducer at design and off-design conditions are analyzed and the results are compared with some flow visualization results obtained at the California Institute of Technology.

Description: Short-duration high-intensity pulsed electron beams have been used to anneal ion-implantation damage in silicon and to electrically activate the dopant species. Lattice regrowth and dopant activation were determined using He(+)-4 backscattering, SEM, TEM, and device performance characteristics as diagnostic techniques. The annealing mechanism is believed to be liquid-phase epitaxial regrowth initiating from the substrate. The high-temperature transient pulse produced by the electron beam causes the dopant to diffuse rapidly in the region where the liquid state is achieved.

Description: Pulsed excimer laser annealing was successfully performed using a 50 w laser. Both polished and texturized cells were tried, however, there are serious problems with nonuniformity on texturized cells. A number of cells were produced and compared to diffusion furnace annealed cells. There was no clear economic advantage in using an excimer laser and there was a small penalty on average efficiency. The conclusion was that the excimer laser anneal process must be able to produce superior cells to be considered as a viable process option.

Description: The goal was to determine if a pulsed excimer laser annealing (PELA) is cost effective compared to a baseline process. An excimer laser pulsed annealing apparatus was built. Three hundred solar cells were fabricated. An economic analysis was performed.

Description: During the next decade, many programs and experiments under the Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment (GEWEX) will utilize present day and future data sets to improve our understanding of the role of moisture in climate, and its interaction with other variables such as clouds and radiation. An important element of GEWEX will be the GEWEX Water Vapor Project (GVaP), which will eventually initiate a routine, real-time assimilation of the highest quality, global water vapor data sets including information gained from future data collection systems, both ground and space based. The comprehensive global water vapor data set being produced by METSAT Inc. uses a combination of ground-based radiosonde data, and infrared and microwave satellite retrievals. This data is needed to provide the desired foundation from which future GEWEX-related research, such as GVaP, can build. The first year of this project was designed to use a combination of the best available atmospheric moisture data including: radiosonde (balloon/acft/rocket), HIRS/MSU (TOVS) retrievals, and SSM/I retrievals, to produce a one-year, global, high resolution data set of integrated column water vapor (precipitable water) with a horizontal resolution of 1 degree, and a temporal resolution of one day. The time period of this pilot product was to be det3ermined by the availability of all the input data sets. January 1988 through December 1988 were selected. In addition, a sample of vertically integrated liquid water content (LWC) was to be produced with the same temporal and spatial parameters. This sample was to be produced over ocean areas only. Three main steps are followed to produce a merged water vapor and liquid water product. Input data from Radiosondes, TOVS, and SSMI/I is quality checked in steps one and two. Processing is done in step two to generate individual total column water vapor and liquid water data sets. The third step, and final processing task, involves merging the individual output products to produce the integrated water vapor product. A final quality control is applied to the merged data sets.

Description: A simple physical scheme is proposed for retrieving cloud liquid water over the ice-free global oceans from Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) observations. Details of the microwave retrieval scheme are discussed, and the microwave-derived liquid water amounts are compared with the ground radiometer and AVHRR-derived liquid water for stratocumulus clouds off the coast of California. Global distributions of the liquid water path derived by the method proposed here are presented.

Description: This paper presents an introduction to a global campaign of simultaneous quasi-static electric field measurements from radars, balloons, and satellites at various places within the earth's environment for April 8-14, 1978. The 7-day time period encompassed both extended magnetically quiet times as well as two magnetic storms. These storms were related to SSCs that followed solar flares, one of which included a day-long solar proton event. The wide variety of instrumentation and associated operating modes involved in this campaign is described. Sample conjunctions between satellites and ionospheric measurements are shown that demonstrate that field line mapping is valid under certain circumstances. Some of the largest ionospheric electric fields ever reported with greater than 100-km scale size occurred on April 11, and these events are discussed in detail.
