    Description: Software application or development in optical image digital data processing requires a fast, good quality, yet inexpensive hard copy of processed images. To achieve this, a Cambo camera with an f 2.8/150-mm Xenotar lens in a Copal shutter having a Graflok back for 4 x 5 Polaroid type 57 pack-film has been interfaced to an existing Adage, AGT-30/Electro-Mechanical Research, EMR 6050 graphic computer system. Time-lapse photography in conjunction with a log to linear voltage transformation has resulted in an interactive system capable of producing a hard copy in 54 sec. The interactive aspect of the system lies in a Tektronix 4002 graphic computer terminal and its associated hard copy unit.

    Description: As new analytical instruments and techniques emerge with increased dimensionality, a corresponding need is seen for data processing logic which can appropriately address the data. Two-dimensional measurements reveal enhanced unknown mixture analysis capability as a result of the greater spectral information content over two one-dimensional methods taken separately. It is noted that two-dimensional convolute integers are merely an extension of the work by Savitzky and Golay (1964). It is shown that these low-pass, high-pass and band-pass digital filters are truly two-dimensional and that they can be applied in a manner identical with their one-dimensional counterpart, that is, a weighted nearest-neighbor, moving average with zero phase shifting, convoluted integer (universal number) weighting coefficients.

    Description: Techniques are reviewed which are of value in CAD/CAM CFD studies of the geometries of new fighter aircraft. In order to refine the computations of the flows to take advantage of the computing power available from supercomputers, it is often necessary to interpolate the geometry of the mesh selected for the numerical analysis of the aircraft shape. Interpolating the geometry permits a higher level of detail in calculations of the flow past specific regions of a design. A microprocessor-based mathematics engine is described for fast image manipulation and rotation to verify that the interpolated geometry will correspond to the design geometry in order to ensure that the flow calculations will remain valid through the interpolation. Applications of the image manipulation system to verify geometrical representations with wire-frame and shaded-surface images are described.

    Description: A multi block zonal algorithm which solves the thin-layer Navier-Stokes and the Euler equations is used to numerically simulate the formation and roll-up of the tip vortex in both subsonic and transonic flows. Four test cases which used small and large aspect ratio wings have been considered to examine the influence of the tip-cap shape, the tip planform and the free-stream Mach number. It appears that both the tip-planform and the tip-cap shape have some influence on the formation of the tip vortex, but its subsequent roll-up seems to be more influenced by the tip-planform shape. In general, a good definition of the formation and the roll-up of the tip vortex has been observed for all the cases considered here. Comparions of the numerical results with the limited, available experimental data show good agreement with both the surface pressures and the tip-vortex strength.

    Description: The analytical capability of the helicopter stability program is discussed. The parameters which are found to be critical to the air resonance characteristics of the soft in-plane hingeless rotor systems are detailed. A summary of two model test programs, a 1/13.8 Froude-scaled BO-105 model and a 1.67 meter (5.5 foot) diameter Froude-scaled YUH-61A model, are presented with emphasis on the selection of the final parameters which were incorporated in the full scale YUH-61A helicopter. Model test data for this configuration are shown. The actual test results of the YUH-61A air resonance in-flight shake test stability are presented. Included are a concise description of the test setup, which employs the Grumman Automated Telemetry System (ATS), the test technique for recording in-flight stability, and the test procedure used to demonstrate favorable stability characteristics with no in-plane damping augmentation (lag damper removed). The data illustrating the stability trend of air resonance with forward speed and the stability trend of ground resonance for percent airborne are presented.

    Description: Design studies are underway for a variety of hypersonic flight vehicles. The National Aero-Space Plane will provide a reusable, single-stage-to-orbit capability for routine access to low earth orbit. Flight-capable satellites will dip into the atmosphere to maneuver to new orbits, while planetary probes will decelerate at their destination by atmospheric aerobraking. To supplement limited experimental capabilities in the hypersonic regime, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is being used to analyze the flow about these configurations. The governing equations include fluid dynamic as well as chemical species equations, which are being solved with new, robust numerical algorithms. Examples of CFD applications to hypersonic vehicles suggest an important role this technology will play in the development of future aerospace systems. The computational resources needed to obtain solutions are large, but solution adaptive grids, convergence acceleration, and parallel processing may make run times manageable.

    Description: An upwind implicit Navier-Stokes code has been used to study hypersonic exhaust plume/afterbody flow fields. It is found that afterbody forces varied linearly with the nozzle exit pressure for moderately underexpanded jets, and that exhaust gases with low isentropic exponents (gamma) contribute up to 25 percent more force than high-gamma exhaust gases. Highly underexpanded jets are shown to create a strong plume shock, and the interaction of this shock with the afterbody produces a complicated pattern of crossflow separation.
