    Description: Results from a parametric study are presented. Tests were on conducted at inlet air pressure of 300,000 and 500,000 pascals, inlet air temperatures of 600K, 700K and 800K, reference velocites from 20 to 35 meters per second, and equivalent ratios from the lean stability limit to 0.7 using Jet A fuel. The tests were conducted in a closed duct test facility. Results from the test support the theory that flameholder blockage is one of the major determinants of the size and shape of the recirculation zone. The test data show that higher blockage with its larger recirculation zone provides more residence time which leads to more NOx formation.

    Description: Gas turbine engine combustor technology for the reduction of pollutant emissions is summarized. Variations of conventional combustion systems and advanced combustor concepts are discussed. Projected results from far term technology efforts aimed at applying the premixed prevaporized and catalytic combustion techniques to aircraft combustion systems indicate a potential for significant reductions in pollutant emission levels.

    Description: Parametric tests were conducted to determine the effects of flameholder pressure drop on the emissions and performance of lean premixed-prevaporized combustors. A conical flameholder mounted in a diverging duct was tested with two values of flameholder blockage. Emissions of nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and unburned hydrocarbons were measured for combustor entrance conditions of 600 to 800 K air temperature, 0.3 MPa to 0.5 MPa pressure, and 20 m/sec to 35 m/sec reference velocity. Jet A fuel was injected at flow rates corresponding to an equivalence ratio range from 0.8 down to the lean stability limit. Emission results for the high-blockage flameholder were a substantial improvement over the low-blockage emission results. A correlation of combustion efficiency with flameholder pressure drop was developed for pressure drops less than 9 percent.

    Description: A gas sampling probe and traversing mechanism were developed to obtain detailed measurements of gaseous pollutant concentrations in the primary and mixing regions of combustors in order to better understand how pollutants are formed. The gas sampling probe was actuated by a three-degree-of-freedom traversing mechanism and the samples obtained were analyzed by an on-line gas analysis system. The pollutants in the flame zone of two different swirl-can combustor modules were measured at an inlet-air temperature of 590 K, pressure of 6 atmospheres, and reference velocities of 23 and 30 meters per second at a fuel-air ratio of 0.02. Typical results show large spatial gradients in the gaseous pollutant concentration close to the swirl-can module. Average concentrations of unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide decrease rapidly in the downstream wake regions of each module. By careful and detailed probing, the effect of various module design features on pollutant formation can be assessed. The techniques presently developed seem adequate to obtain the desired information.

    Description: Results are presented from an intensive optical and IR monitoring program of the flux and polarization characteristics of BL Lac. It is found that the polarization variations increase in amplitude with increasing time interval, and that the path traced out by the polarization vector in the Q-U plane is a random walk. In view of earlier measurements of BL Lac, the polarization fluctuations can be represented at low frequencies by the flat power spectrum of white noise, up to a frequency of 0.05 cycles/day. Above this frequency, the spectrum steepens to that of a random walk. A model for BL Lac suggested by the polarimetric noise can be constructed from independent sources of light with randomly oriented, strong polarization. Small random differences in spectral index from source to source could also explain the variable wavelength dependence of polarization.

    Description: In view of their potential interest as individual objects of study, a catalog is presented of stars noted by the Duerr and Craine (1982) study of the nature of the dark cloud L1454 to have V-I magnitudes greater than about 2.5. Finding charts are given for these 156 stars, with attention to the individual quadrants of the region studied. The original star counts had been made with Near Infrared Photographic Sky Survey data.

    Description: The Near Infrared Photographic Sky Survey (NIPSS) is a data base with broad potential not only for optical identification of point infrared sources, but also for a variety of studies related to the distribution of red stars. It has been suggested that these applications could be greatly aided by digitization of the data base, for which a feasibility study is under way. As a part of this study a NIPSS visual and near-infrared photographic pair, encompassing the dark cloud L 1454, was digitized. Star counts in this region suggest the existence of two clouds along the line of sight and allowed the distances, extinctions, and masses of the clouds to be estimated. In addition, maps of the region as a function of the redness of the constituent stars were generated. These, when compared to the extinction maps, allow a discussion of the star-formation properties of the region.

    Description: Emissions of NOx, CO and unburned hydrocarbons (UHC) are reported for a lean premixed propane-air system at inlet conditions of 800K and 1 MPa using twelve flameholder designs. The flameholders tested represent six design concepts with two values of blockage for each concept. Data were obtained at reference velocities of 35 m/s, 25 m/s and 20 m/s at combustor stations 10 cm and 30 cm downstream of the flameholders. Flameholder pressure drop was found to be a principal determinant of emissions performance. Designs producing larger pressure drops also produced less NOx, CO and UHC emissions. The lean stability limit equivalence ratio was found to be approximately 0.35 for all designs. Flashback velocities (axial components in the flameholder passages) varied between 30 m/s and 40 m/s. A perforated plate flameholder was operated with a velocity as low as 23 m/s through the perforations at equivalence ratio 0.7 without producing flashback.
