    Description: In this paper an attempt is made to illustrate how second-order closure techniques might be used to make detailed calculations of turbulent diffusion flames. Two of the problems of closure that are peculiar to turbulent chemically reacting flows are discussed in some detail. These are the problem of computing in a consistent way all the correlations of fluctuations in scalar quantities needed for closure and the problem of the generation of turbulence by chemical reactions. Tentative closure models are put forward for both of these problems. Although the closure model for fluctuations in scalar quantities can, to a certain extent, be checked against idealized numerical examples for which exact solutions are known, the validity of both the closure models proposed here must, in the end, be determined by detailed comparison of computed results with experimental data.

    Description: A complete second-order closure program for the investigation of chemically reacting turbulent flowfields is being developed. Many of the turbulence models being used have been developed and tested during previous studies of a variety of incompressible and compressible shear flows. A number of additional scalar correlations have to be modeled for chemically reacting flows, and a 'typical eddy' model has been developed for the joint probability density function for all the scalars. A simpler model in which higher-order scalar correlations are set zero is also being used. The program has been recently extended to multi-species, multi-step chemical reactions. Computations have been performed using the second-order closure program to study the turbulence-chemistry interaction in DF chemical laser flows and in a hydrogen-air diffusion flame. The results demonstrate the importance of the inclusion of the concentration and temperature fluctuation correlations in turbulent reacting flows.

    Description: In many real-world pollution chemical reaction problems, the rate of reaction problems, the rate of reaction may be greatly affected by unmixedness. An approximate closure scheme for a chemical kinetic submodel which conforms to the principles of invariant modeling and which accounts for the effects of inhomogeneous mixing over a wide range of conditions has been developed. This submodel has been coupled successfully with invariant turbulence and diffusion models, permitting calculation of two-dimensional diffusion of two reacting (isothermally) chemical species. The initial calculations indicate the ozone reactions in the wake of stratospheric aircraft will be substantially affected by the rate of diffusion of ozone into the wake, and in the early wake, by unmixedness.

    Description: A tentative scheme is proposed for constructing second-order closure models of turbulent reacting flows, with particular reference to mixing processes in turbulent diffusion flows. The model is based on the concepts of typical structure and typical eddy, and treats various hypothetical turbulent flame situations, including the time dependence of species mass fractions passing a point in the flame, the most typical occurrence of species mass fractions, and the case of a rather bizarre typical eddy which shows the effects of nonmixedness.
