    Description: Over the past years, Tandem Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (TAMS) has become established as an important method for radionuclide analysis. In the Arizona system the accelerator is operated at a thermal voltage of 1.8MV for C-14 analysis, and 1.6 to 2MV for Be-10. Samples are inserted into a cesium sputter ion source in solid form. Negative ions sputtered from the target are accelerated to about 25kV, and the injection magnet selects ions of a particular mass. Ions of the 3+ charge state, having an energy of about 9MeV are selected by an electrostatic deflector, surviving ions pass through two magnets, where only ions of the desired mass-energy product are selected. The final detector is a combination ionization chamber to measure energy loss (and hence, Z), and a silicon surface-barrier detector which measures residual energy. After counting the trace iosotope for a fixed time, the injected ions are switched to the major isotope used for normalization. These ions are deflected into a Faraday cup after the first high-energy magnet. Repeated measurements of the isotope ratio of both sample and standards results in a measurement of the concentration of the radionuclide. Recent improvements in sample preparation for C-14 make preparation of high-beam current graphite targets directly from CO2 feasible. Except for some measurements of standards and backgrounds for Be-10 measurements to date have been on C-14. Although most results have been in archaeology and quaternary geology, studies have been expanded to include cosmogenic C-14 in meteorites. The data obtained so far tend to confirm the antiquity of Antarctic meteorites from the Allan Hills site. Data on three samples of Yamato meteorites gave terrestrial ages of between about 3 and 22 thousand years.

    Description: Cosmic-ray-produced nuclides measured in samples taken from known locations on a big slab of the large (R approximately equals to 45 cm) L5-chondrite Knyahinya provide good depth-vs-concentration profiles to develop and test models for the production of cosmogenic nuclides in meteorites. We report new profiles for Be-10, Al-26, Cl-36 in metallic and non-magnetic phases of 8 documented samples from Knyahinya and for C-14 in bulk samples from 7 Knyahinya samples. These new measured profiles are very similar to profiles calculated with particle fluxes from the LAHET Monte Carlo production and transport code system and with cross sections for major reactions.

    Description: C-14 measurements were made on six Yamato and Victoria Land meteorites using tandem accelerator mass spectroscopy. The studies brought to 27 the number of Antarctic meteorites that have been examined for terrestrial aging. Details of the spectroscopic method are provided, along with the results in combinations with the data from the other 21 meteorites. It is found that the Yamato meteorites are younger than those found at Allan Hills, implying that two mechanisms may exist for the abundant Antarctic meteorites: exposure where falling due to a paucity of ice, and transport and exposure by sublimating ice.

    Description: We report on a series of measurements of C-14 in samples of the L-chondrite Knyahinya, as a function of depth. The results show C-14 concentrations ranging from 37 to 58 dpm/kg. These measurements are compared to the levels of Ne-21, Be-10 and noble-gas ratios in this meteorite reported by Graf et al (1990). We also compare the C-14 data to the expected profile based on two sets of model calculations. The behavior of this radioisotope with depth is similar to that expected from the models, and good agreement with the profiles of other nuclides is also observed.

    Description: We were able to develop measurements of C-14 in meteorites as a useful tool for estimates of terrestrial age. Prior to this accomplishment, only a few measurements of C-14 terrestrial ages had been made. The sample sizes were larger, and there had been no systematic study of the various parameters affecting production of C-14, such as depth dependence, and the production cross sections for C-14 from spallation amounted to a few data points. Presently, C-14 ages are an accepted terrestrial age estimate in the meteorite community, whereas before this work the few data available were difficult to interpret. We have obtained terrestrial ages not only on groups of meteorites from different geographic areas but also information on unique meteorites from particularly interesting groups, such as meteorites originating from the Moon, or SNC meteorites, which many researchers believe are derived from Mars.

    Description: This paper reports C-14 measurements in meteorites using an extraction method which employs RF melting of samples as small as 0.1 g. A study of extraction of cosmic-ray-produced C-14 in samples of Bruderheim gave C-14 levels between 38 and 60 dpm/kg for samples which had been preheated in air between 250 and 700 C, with a mean value of 46.8 + or - 1.4 dpm/kg. A range of values between 35 and 59 dpm/kg was found for other falls of saturated meteorites preheated to 500 C. The preheating step is shown to be effective in removing terrestrial carbon contamination. A series of samples previously dated by Kr-81 as having ages of 120-310 kyr gave C-14 levels of between less than 0.16 and 0.37 + or - 0.10 dpm/kg. These levels are consistent with levels of in situ production by cosmic rays at the earth's surface.

    Description: Cosmic rays penetrate the lunar surface and interact with the lunar rocks to produce both radionuclides and stable nuclides. Production depth profiles for long-lived radionuclides produce in lunar rocks are measured using Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS). For a particular radionuclide these production depth profiles can be interpreted to give an estimate for the solar proton flux over a time period characterized by the half life of the radionuclide under study. This analysis is possible if and only if all the cross sections for the interactions of all cosmic ray particles with all elements found in lunar rocks are well known. In practice, the most important cross sections needed are the proton production cross sections, because 98% of solar cosmic rays and (similar to)87% of galactic cosmic rays are protons. The cross sections for the production of long-lived radionuclides were very difficult to measure before the development of AMS and only in recent years has significant progress been made in determining these essential cross sections. Oxygen and silicon are major constituents of lunar rocks. We have reported already C-14 production cross sections from O and Si for proton energies 25-500 MeV, and O(p,x)(sup 10)Be from 58 160 MeV[6]. Here we present new measurements for the cross sections O(p,x)Be-10,O(p,x)Be-7, Si(p,x)Be-7,Si(p,x)Al-26, and Si(p,x)Na-22 from approximately 30 - 500 MeV.

    Description: We report on a series of 27 C-14 terrestrial ages of meteorites from four states in the central and southwestern U.S. These results were compared to the earlier work of Boeckl (1972). Our results showed that the weathering rate for destruction of meteorites is lower than suggested by Boeckl. We estimate a 'half-life' for removal of meteorites of about 10 to 15 ka, similar to that derived for Roosevelt County meteorites. We also studied the weathering of these meteorites compared to terrestrial age. Only a weak correlation was observed, and for these meteorites the degree of weathering can only be taken as a weak indicator of terrestrial residence time. We also measured the delta-C-13 and C-14 and amount of weathering-product carbonates which show some interesting variations with the length of time the meteorites have been exposed to weathering.
