    Description: This paper presents experimental results of the control system for the JASON ROV that has been designed for precision survey and other automated applications. The JASON control system emphasizes a form of supervisory control where the human pilot and the automatic system share the control tasks. Results presented include hovering, automatic track following, and several interactive modes.

    Description: The purpose of this project was to design a method of producing a fabric material on the lunar surface from readily available glass fibers. Various methods for forming fabrics were analyzed to determine which methods were appropriate for the lunar conditions. A nonwoven process was determined to be the most suitable process for making a fabric material out of fiberglass under these conditions. Various resins were considered for adhering the fibers. A single thermoplastic resin (AURUM) was found to be the only applicable resin. The end product of the process was determined to be suitable for use as a roadway surfacing material, canopy material, reflective material, or packaging material. A cost analysis of the lunar process versus shipping the end-product from the Earth suggests that the lunar formation is highly feasible. A design for a lunar, nonwoven process was determined and is included.

    Description: A wavefront mesh generator for two dimensional triangular meshes as well as a brief description of the solution method used with these meshes are presented. The interest is in creating meshes for solving the equations of fluid mechanics in complex turbomachinery problems, although the mesh generator and flow solver may be used for a larger variety of applications. The focus is on the flexibility and power of the mesh generation method for triangulating extremely complex geometries and in changing the geometry to create a new mesh. Two turbomachinery applications are presented which take advantage of this method: the analysis of pylon/strut and pylon/OGV interaction in the bypass of a turbofan.

    Description: The spectrum of S140 IR from 65 to 345 kaysers (155-29 microns) has been measured with 9.4-kayser resolution. The emission in this spectral range is consistent with a 9-arcsec-diameter blackbody radiating at a temperature of 70 K. Attempts at finding a self-consistent radiative-transfer model of the source suggest that the near- and far-infrared observations cannot result from a spherically symmetric nebula with a continuous density distribution and a central exciting source. A number of compact near-infrared sources may be embedded in the cloud.

    Description: The Dynamic Gas Temperature Measurement System compensation software accepts digitized data from two different diameter thermocouples and computes a compensated frequency response spectrum for one of the thermocouples. Detailed discussions of the physical system, analytical model, and computer software are presented in this volume and in Volume 1 of this report under Task 3. Computer program software restrictions and test cases are also presented. Compensated and uncompensated data may be presented in either the time or frequency domain. Time domain data are presented as instantaneous temperature vs time. Frequency domain data may be presented in several forms such as power spectral density vs frequency.

    Description: The effects of an albedo of internal dust, such as ionization structure and temperature of dust grain, were studied by the quasi-diffusion method with an iterative technique for solving the radiative heat transfer equations. It was found that the generalized on-the-spot approximation solution is adequate for most astrophysical applications for a zero albedo; for a nonzero albedo, the Eddington approximation is more accurate. The albedo increases the average energy of the diffuse photons, increasing the ionization level of hydrogen and heavy elements if the Eddington approximation is applied; the dust thermal gradient is reduced so that the infrared spectrum approaches blackbody spectrum with an increasing albedo.

    Description: The effects of dust scattering on observable optical and infrared parameters, and the accuracy of approximate solutions were examined. The equation of radiative transfer in a static and homogeneous, but not necessarily uniform, distribution gas and dust around a central empty core with a point source of energy at its center was solved. The dust properties were characterized by a phenomenological extinction cross section, albedo and parameters describing the anisotropy of dust scattering. For ultraviolet photons, ionization equilibrium equations for the gas were solved, and for infrared photons a self-consistent dust temperature was calculated. Ray tracing was used to solve for the angular dependence of the intensity.

    Description: This is the first of a series of papers dealing with transfer of radiation in dusty nebulae. The formulae for the general problem are presented. This paper discusses nebulae containing dust and hydrogen. Approximate solutions, accurate to within 50 percent, are obtained for spherical nebulae containing purely absorbing dust. Less accurate solutions are presented for the general case of scattering and absorbing dust. The results are presented in a form convenient for calculating the required number of ionizing photons, the fractional ionization of hydrogen, and the fractions of ionizing photons absorbed by dust and gas in terms of size, hydrogen density, dust albedo, and optical depth. Explicit relations between these quantities are obtained for uniform nebulae. Simple integrals are presented for calculating the above quantities for spherically symmetric nebulae with nonuniform gas and dust distribution.
