Description: Single crystals of mercurous chloride were grown at temperature gradients of 8, 11 and 17 K/cm by the physical vapor transport method. The optical quality of these crystals was evaluated by measuring bulk scattering and inhomogeneity of refractive index by birefringence interferometry. It was observed that a high temperature gradient at the solid-vapor interface induced thermal stresses and crystals showed higher scattering and irregular fringes.

Description: A complete Mars year of measurements of atmospheric water vapor in the south arctic have been obtained from the Viking Orbiters. Analysis of the observations indicates that, except for the south remnant cap, the southern hemisphere of Mars is devoid of any substantial reservoirs of water in contact with the atmosphere, and that, in the summer time, the top layer of soil is desiccated. Small amounts of water ice are incorporated into the annual CO2 cap; this water is released at the cap margin when it retreats in the spring. The first global dust storm resulted in heating of the south arctic atmosphere and a transport of water in from the equatorial region. The second global dust storm had a negligible effect on atmospheric water vapor; the dust contained little water.

Description: As a general rule, Mars' atmosphere contains as much water vapor as it can hold on a daily basis; it reaches saturation at night, and the vapor appears to be distributed throughout the lowest several kilometers. Interesting exceptions to this occur when there are temperature inversions in the arctic springtime and during dust-storm activity. As contrasted to the northern hemisphere there appears to be no local source of water in the southern temperate and arctic areas.

Description: Analysis of observations made from the Viking 1 Orbiter indicates that the water vapor over the Viking 1 landing site is uniformly mixed with the atmosphere and not concentrated near the surface. The analysis incorporates the effects of atmospheric scattering and explains why previous earth-based observations showed a strong diurnal variation in water content. It also explains the lack of an early morning fog and removes the necessity of daily exchange of large amounts of water between the surface and the atmosphere. A water vapor volume mixing ratio of 1.5 x 10 to the -4th is inferred for the Viking 1 site in late summer.

Description: A spatially multiplexed infrared camera is described. The camera records an image by measuring the coefficients of an orthogonal series expansion of the two-dimensional radiance distribution. By choice of appropriate functions, significant gains in the picture signal-to-noise ratio can be realized. We have constructed a camera utilizing this multiplexing principle to record images of astronomical objects at infrared wavelengths, where conventional scanning systems perform badly because of low signal levels. Test results verify that the camera exhibits the increase of efficiency expected of a multiplexing system, allowing exposure times two orders of magnitude shorter than necessary for comparable scanning systems.

Description: It is shown that by utilizing a space-borne telescope it may be possible to directly image planetary systems around the nearest stars. Direct imaging, while limited to the nearest stars, would provide a great deal of information on the planet, over and above the planet's orbital elements - estimates of the planet's size and rotation rate, and the presence or absence of an atmosphere are all possible if light from the planet can be separated from light from the star. It is shown that a Jupiter-like planet would be detectable around several of the nearest stars.
