Description: Global greening trends have been widely reported based on long‐term remote sensing data of terrestrial ecosystems. Typically, a hypothesis test is performed for each grid cell; this leads to multiple hypothesis testing and false positive trend detection. We reanalyze global greening and account for this issue with a novel statistical method that allows robust inference on greening regions. Based on leaf area index (LAI) data, our methods reduce the detected greening from 35.2% to 15.3% of the terrestrial land surface; this reduction is most notable in nonwoody vegetation. Our results confirm several greening regions (China, India, Europe, Sahel, North America, Brazil, and Siberia), that are also supported by independent data products. We also report evidence for an increasing seasonal amplitude in LAI north of 35°N. Considering the widespread use of spatially replicated trend tests in global change research, we recommend adopting the proposed multiple testing procedure to control false positive outcomes.
Description: Plain Language Summary: Using satellite data, recent studies have detected an increase in vegetation greenness around the globe. These studies attribute this vegetation increase to different factors, such as warming or land use change. However, we argue that the commonly used analysis method is detecting too many regions with trends. In this work, we reanalyze vegetation data using the leaf area index, which measures the area occupied by leaves in any given area. With our refined methods, we too detect greening regions around the world, however these regions are smaller and less abundant. Our research introduces a step in the statistical analysis that increases the reliability of the detected vegetation greening. This can help establish more consensus on what the main contributing factors are for the observed vegetation increase.
Description: Key Points: Many studies have consistently reported on global greening trends, but repeatedly without rigorous significance testing. Although global greening has been overestimated, significant greening can still be rigorously detected. We observe an increase in the seasonal amplitude of leaf area index around the glob.

Description: Cosmogenic nuclide dating of glacial landforms may lead to ambiguous results for ice retreat histories. The persistence of significant cosmogenic concentrations inherited from previous exposure may increase the apparent exposure ages for polished bedrocks affected by limited erosion under ice and for erratic boulders transported by glaciers and previously exposed in high-altitude rock walls. In contrast, transient burying by moraines, sediments and snow decreases the apparent exposure age. We propose a new sampling strategy, applied to four sites distributed in the Arc and Arve valleys in the Western Alps, to better constrain the factors that can bias exposure ages associated with glacial processes. We used the terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide 10Be (TCN) to estimate the exposure time from paired sampling of depth profiles in polished bedrock and on overlying erratic boulders. For a given sampling site, the exposure ages for both the polished bedrock and boulder are expected to be the same. However, in six cases out of seven, boulders had significantly higher 10Be surface concentrations than those of the associated polished surfaces. In present and past glacial processes, the 10Be distribution with depth for boulders and bedrocks implies the presence of an inheritance concentration of 10Be. Our study suggests that 10Be concentrations in erratic boulders and in polished bedrocks provide maximum and minimum exposure ages of the glacial retreat, respectively. © 2019 The Authors. Description: A new type of frequency multiplier structure is being developed which is suitable for application at frequencies above 1 THz. This structure preserves some of the properties of waveguide for mode control, yet is not truly single mode. The device resembles a sectoral horn, with a varactor diode mounted near the throat. Input and output coupling are through the same aperture, requiring a quasi-optical diplexer. Initial tests are directed at building a tripler at 500 GHz, for comparison with waveguide structures. The diplexer is a blazed diffraction grating with appropriate focusing optics. Model studies show that the impedance match to a varactor should be good, and initial tests of the beam patterns of the prototype indicate that optical coupling efficiency should be very high. The structure also has the potential for use as a fundamental mixer, or as a third harmonic mixer.

Description: The objective of this project is to evaluate methodologies for the qualitative and quantitative determination of the gaseous products of combustion of non-metallic materials of interest to the aerospace community. The goal is to develop instrumentation and analysis procedures which qualitatively and quantitatively identify gaseous products evolved by thermal decomposition and provide NASA a detailed system operating procedure.

Description: Plastic clamp requires no special installation or removal tools. Clamp slips easily over end of pin. Once engaged in groove, holds pin securely. Installed and removed easily without special tools - screwdriver or putty knife adequate for prying out of groove. Used to retain bearings, rollers pulleys, other parts that rotate. Applications include slowly and intermittently rotating parts in appliances.

Description: Autonomic Computing (AC), self-management based on high level guidance from humans, is increasingly gaining momentum as the way forward in designing reliable systems that hide complexity and conquer IT management costs. Effectively, AC may be viewed as Policy-Based Self-Management. The Model Driven Architecture (MDA) approach focuses on building models that can be transformed into code in an automatic manner. In this paper, we look at ways to implement Policy-Based Self-Management by means of models that can be converted to code using transformations that follow the MDA philosophy. We propose a set of UML-based models to specify autonomic and autonomous features along with the necessary procedures, based on modification and composition of models, to deploy a policy as an executing system.

Description: This paper will give an overview of the unique mechanical and optical design of the DVA-1 telescope. The rim supported carbon fibre reflector surfaces are designed to be both low cost and have high performance under wind, gravity, and thermal loads. The shaped offset Gregorian optics offer low and stable side lobes along with a large area at the secondary focus for multiple feeds with no aperture blockage. Telescope performance under ideal conditions as well as performance under gravity, wind, and thermal loads will be compared directly using calculated radiation patterns for each of these operating conditions.
