    Description: Curation of Mars samples includes both samples that are returned to Earth, and samples that are collected, examined, and archived on Mars. Both kinds of curation operations will require careful planning to ensure that the samples are not contaminated by the instruments that are used to collect and contain them. In both cases, sample examination and subdivision must take place in an environment that is organically, inorganically, and biologically clean. Some samples will need to be prepared for analysis under ultra-clean or cryogenic conditions. Inorganic and biological cleanliness are achievable separately by cleanroom and biosafety lab techniques. Organic cleanliness to the 〈50 ng/sq cm level requires material control and sorbent removal - techniques being applied in our Class 10 cleanrooms and sample processing gloveboxes.

    Description: The Nozzle Acoustic Test Rig (NATR) was developed to provide additional test capabilities at Lewis needed to meet HSR program goals. The NATR is a large f ree-jet facility (free-jet diameter = 53 in.) with a design Mach number of 0.3. It is located inside a geodesic dome, adjacent to the existing Powered Lift Facility (PLF). The NATR allows nozzle concepts to be acoustically assessed for far-field (approximately 50 feet) noise characteristics under conditions simulating forward flight. An ejector concept was identified as a means of supplying the required airflow for this free-jet facility. The primary stream is supplied through a circular array of choked nozzles and the resulting low pressure in the constant, annular- area mixing section causes a "pumping" action that entrains the secondary stream. The mixed flow expands through an annular diffuser and into a plenum chamber. Once inside the plenum, the flow passes over a honeycomb/screen combination intended to remove large disturbances and provide uniform flow. The flow accelerates through an elliptical contraction section where it achieves a free-jet Mach number of up to 0.3.

    Description: The source noise portion of the High Speed Research Program at NASA LeRC is focused on jet noise reduction. A number of jet noise reduction concepts are being investigated. These include two concepts, the Pratt & Whitney ejector suppressor nozzle and the General Electric (GE) 2D-CD mixer ejector nozzle, that rely on ejectors to entrain significant amounts of ambient air to mix with the engine exhaust to reduce the final exhaust velocity. Another concept, the GE 'Flade Nozzle' uses fan bypass air at takeoff to reduce the mixed exhaust velocity and to create a fluid shield around a mixer suppressor. Additional concepts are being investigated at Georgia Tech Research Institute and at NASA LeRC. These will be discussed in more detail in later figures. Analytical methods for jet noise prediction are also being developed. Efforts in this area include upgrades to the GE MGB jet mixing noise prediction procedure, evaluation of shock noise prediction procedures, and efforts to predict jet noise directly from the unsteady Navier-Stokes equation.

    Description: Organometallic sources are available for all the III-V elements and a variety of dopants; thus it is possible to use the technique to grow a wide variety of semiconductor compounds. AlGaAsSb and AlGaInAs alloys for multijunction monolithic solar cells were grown by OM-VPE. While the effort concentrated on terrestrial applications, the success of OM-VPE grown GaAs/AlGaAs concentrator solar cells (23% at 400 suns) demonstrates that OM-VPE is suitable for growing high efficiency solar cells in large quantities for space applications. In addition, OM-VPE offers the potential for substantial cost reduction of photovoltaic devices with scale up and automation and due to high process yield from reproducible, uniform epitaxial growths with excellent surface morphology.

    Description: The system integration issues associated with the design of Rovers for Mars ground surface operations are addressed in this paper. Requirements are established for both long distance traverse between geology sites and for geologic survey operations. To satisfy these mission requirements, a semi-autonomous vehicle design has been proposed and its performance capabilities are assessed. Furthermore, the mobility, power consumption, coordination and control (maneuverability), and reliability issues associated with the design of mobility systems to permit vehicle traverse over rugged terrain are examined and the direction of future work required to address these issues is outlined.
