Description: A multimedia, CD ROM to teach 2nd graders about remote sensing was created and developed into a web site. Distribution was expanded for Grades K-4 or 5-8. The idea was to have a story introduction, interactive story and a teacher's website. Interactive Multimedia Adventures in Grade School Education using Remote Sensing (I.M.A.G.E.R.S.) was created. The lessons are easy to use, readily available and aligned with national standards. This resource combines hands-on activities with an interactive web site

Description: A revised limit on the local X-ray emissivity due to sources correlated with nearby galaxies is obtained. These results are extrapolated up to a redshift of about 5, and it is found that a smaller, but still significant, fraction of the X-ray background (30 +/- 15 percent) can be accounted for by these sources. Evolution of the source properties and/or a new population of sources at high redshift is required to explain the residual background emissions.

Description: The Lewis Research Center is developing, under contract, a Spacelab (manned module in the Space Shuttle payload bay) qualified infrared imager for noncontact surface temperature measurement in the Surface Tension Driven Convection Experiment, a microgravity fluid physics experiment. A versatile design philosophy was used in order to provide other experiments with essentially an off the shelf Shuttle qualified instrument, eliminating the duplication of the rigorous development and flight qualification processes. An Inframetrics Model 600 Scanning Infrared Radiometer is being modified to satisfy both experimental and flight requirements, while maintaining the basic performance parameters of the commercial instrument. The modifications include an efficient, low power closed cycle cryogenic cooler to cool the detector, a ruggedized scanner mechanism, 8 bit A/D conversion, Mil-STD components (where possible), size and weight optimization, and the addition of a microprocessor to perform automatic gain control. Features such as detector spectral response, the addition of spectral filters, and target temperature ranges could easily be changed to make this instrument useful as both a qualitative and quantitative diagnostic tool for Spacelab microgravity experiments, in combustion and fluid physics.

Description: The objectives of the High Resolution, High Frame Rate Video Technology (HHVT) Users' Requirements Survey were the following: (1) Document the requirements of potential users of the HHVT system; (2) Establish a data base relating key video parameters to HHVT users; (3) Guide the development of a high resolution, high frame rate video system offering high data storage capacity and high data transmission rates; (4) Allow users to compare their requirements to those of other users and to the state-of-the-art technology; and (5) Allow users to reassess, if necessary, their requirements in the light of existing and near-term technology. The results of the Users' Requirements Survey are presented. The diversity of these requirements indicates a need for developing a video system with great flexibility.

Description: The separation tests performed during the qualification test program of the Ariane 4 Payload Fairing are described. This is the first fairing structure to be developed using carbon fiber technology. Two separation tests were performed under vacuum conditions. The primary objectives of these tests were to verify compliance with the vehicle imposed requirements and to establish the behavioral characteristics of the fairing structure itself.

Description: Observations of the giant radio galaxy B2 1141+37, which has a widely separated two-component radio structure and is optically identified with a tight chain of galaxies, are reported. The source was observed at 4900 MHz with the VLA at an effective integration time of 17 min. The map obtained shows two radio lobes with maxima coinciding with those in a previous 1415 MHz map and intensities about 1.5 times smaller than those obtained by extrapolating the spectrum defined by the flux density at 408 and 1415 MHz. Measurements of the redshifts of the two brightest galaxies identified with the radio source with an image intensified dissector scanner result in values of 0.1145 and 0.1155, which imply, with a Hubble constant of 50 km/sec per Mpc, a distance of 687 Mpc to the radio source and a separation of 1.0 Mpc between the lobes making it one of the largest radio sources known.

Description: The heavy schedule of tracking activities at the Echo Deep Space Station (DSS 12) prevents some time-consuming maintenance tasks from being performed. Careful coordination prior to and during a mandatory task (antenna panel replacement) made it possible to do a large number of unrelated tasks that ordinarily would have to be deferred. The maintenance and operations tasks accomplished during the downtime are described.

Description: Radio, optical, and X-ray observations of two extended radio sources separated by 99 arc sec (4C 08.66) are reported. Both sources are identified with quasars: z = 0.6227 for the northern source, and z = 0.2282 for the southern. A faint cluster of galaxies is found near the northern source, and the radio structure of this source is interpreted as providing evidence for relative motion between the quasar and the cluster gas, just as Hintzen et al. (1981) interpreted their quasar-cluster association, 3C 275.1. Physical parameters for the core and the extended emission of the northern quasar are estimated. Limits on the magnetic field strength and angular diameter are derived from the radio spectrum of the core and the magnetic field direction in the jet is found from polarization measurements. The morphology of the X-ray source is consistent with inverse-Compton emission from relic radio lobes, but an origin from the quasar itself or cluster gas cannot be ruled out.
