    Description: Bright supernovae in external galaxies offer a rare opportunity to probe the intervening interstellar media over very extended path-lengths, including the disk and halo of the Galaxy and the parent galaxy of the supernova. SN 1980k was discovered in NGC 6946 on 1980 October 29. In the first month after discovery, high resolution optical and ultraviolet observations were obtained to exploit the supernova as a probe of the intervening interstellar media. The obtained data are discussed. In the spectra, absorption lines were observed of Mg I, Mg II, Fe II, Mn II, Ca II and Na I. The absorption lines are attributed to the intervening interstellar media distributed over the very extended line of sight sampled, of order 7 Mpc. These lines are wider and stronger than any previously measured in the quiescent interstellar gas in the halo and disk of the Milky Way and of external galaxies

    Description: Results from a preliminary study of interstellar absorption lines in the spectra of the three stars HD149757, HD93521 and HD153919, observed by the IUE during its commissioning phase are presented. They demonstrate the capabilities of the IUE for interstellar research. Results from a preliminary study of the emission line spectrum of the planetary nebula NGC 7027 are outlined and used to study its interstellar reddening.

    Description: During the commissioning phase of IUE several extragalactic objects were observed spectrally at low dispersion in the UV range lambda lambda 1150-3200: the Seyfert galaxies NGC4151 and NGC1068, the QSO 3C273, the BL Lacertae object B2 1101+38, the giant elliptical galaxy M87 and the spiral galaxy M81. The results obtained are presented and a preliminary analysis given for all six objects, discussing the continuous spectrum, extinction, emission line spectrum and absorption line spectrum, where possible for each case. Several new or confirmatory astrophysical results are obtained.

    Description: During the commissioning phase of IUE observations were made of a selection of hot stars: the white dwarf HZ43, the hot subdwarf BD +75 deg 325, the nucleus of the planetary nebula NGC 6826, the dwarf nova SS Cygni, and the peculiar object Eta Carinae. The observations were made in the low dispersion mode and the data have been reduced using a preliminary calibration. The results are presented and discussed for each object.

    Description: Repeated observations of the Seyfert 1 galaxies I Zw 1 and II Zw 136, which have very strong Fe II emission lines in the optical region, were made at low resolution with the IUE Satellite. The ultraviolet spectra are very similar: both are variable and show broad emission features of Fe II (especially the UV multiplets 1, 33, 60, 62, and 63) as well as the emission lines usually strong in Seyferts and quasars. The data strongly support the hypothesis that the optical Fe II emission lines are primarily due to collisional excitation and that resonance fluorescence makes only a minor contribution to the excitation of these lines.

    Description: Spectrophotometric observations have been made of the nebulosity surrounding the Seyfert (or N) galaxy 3C 120, as well as of the nucleus. Observations of the nebulosity reveal an extensive network of H II regions characterized by a high ionization level, which, it is argued, is due to photoionizations by the nucleus. The O/H and N/O abundance ratios in this gas, at least as far out as 8 kpc from the nucleus, must be within a factor of 20 of the solar values. The velocity field of this gas is very chaotic, but the systematic gas velocities, relative to the nucleus, are mostly positive to one side of an axis passing through the nucleus at P.A. 72 deg and mostly negative on the other side. The position angle of this axis is consistent with the direction (P.A. 65 deg) along which the compact radio source in the nucleus is expanding, but it is about 45 deg away from the major or minor axes of the fainter elliptical structure visible on previously published broad-band direct plates.

    Description: We describe ultraviolet and optical imaging and spectroscopy within the central few arcseconds of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151, obtained with the Faint Object Camera on the Hubble Space Telescope. A narrowband image including (O III) lambda(5007) shows a bright nucleus centered on a complex biconical structure having apparent opening angle approximately 65 deg and axis at a position angle along 65 deg-245 deg; images in bands including Lyman-alpha and C IV lambda(1550) and in the optical continuum near 5500 A, show only the bright nucleus. In an off-nuclear optical long-slit spectrum we find a high and a low radial velocity component within the narrow emission lines. We identify the low-velocity component with the bright, extended, knotty structure within the cones, and the high-velocity component with more confined diffuse emission. Also present are strong continuum emission and broad Balmer emission line components, which we attribute to the extended point spread function arising from the intense nuclear emission. Adopting the geometry pointed out by Pedlar et al. (1993) to explain the observed misalignment of the radio jets and the main optical structure we model an ionizing radiation bicone, originating within a galactic disk, with apex at the active nucleus and axis centered on the extended radio jets. We confirm that through density bounding the gross spatial structure of the emission line region can be reproduced with a wide opening angle that includes the line of sight, consistent with the presence of a simple opaque torus allowing direct view of the nucleus. In particular, our modelling reproduces the observed decrease in position angle with distance from the nucleus, progressing initially from the direction of the extended radio jet, through our optical structure, and on to the extended narrow-line region. We explore the kinematics of the narrow-line low- and high-velocity components on the basis of our spectroscopy and adopted model structure.

    Description: Using a sample of 119 QSOs, containing objects we have selected having previously available high quality ground-based and IUE spectral observations, together with Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations of 26 QSOs from Bahcall et al. (1993, 1995) and Impey et al. (1995) and new optical observations of 41 objects by Steidel & Sargent (1995), we study the redshift evolution of Lyman limit absorption systems (LLSs; tau greater than 1.0) over the reshift range 0.32 less than or equal to z(sub LLS) less than or equal to 4.11. The HST observations significantly improve the determination of the low redshift (0.4 less than or equal to z(sub LLS) less than or equal to 1.4) distribution. We find the effect which may have been responsible for the apparent strong evolution at a(sub LLS) greater than or equal to 2.5 found by Lanzetta (1991), which led him to consider a broken, not single power law as a better description of the redshift distribution of LLSs. After removing objects which may bias our sample, leaving a total of 169 QSOs, we find the distribution is well described by a single power law, and obtain for the number density as a function of redshift the form N(z) = N(sub 0)(1 + z)(exp gamma) with gamma = 1.50 =/- 0.39 and N(sub 0) = 0.25(sup -0.10)(sub +0.17), consistent with a constant comoving density of absorbers in a Firedmann universe with q(sub 0) = 0 but indicating evolution if q(sub 0) = 1/2.

    Description: Surface photometry data obtained with the Faint Object Camera of the Hubble Space Telescope in the cores of ten galaxies is presented. The major results are: (1) none of the galaxies show truly 'isothermal' cores, (2) galaxies with nuclear activity show very similar light profiles, (3) all objects show central mass densities above 10 exp 3 solar masses/cu pc3, and (4) four of the galaxies (M87, NGC 3862, NGC 4594, NGC 6251) show evidence for exceptional nuclear mass concentrations.

    Description: We present imaging observations of NGC 1068 taken with the COSTAR-corrected (Corrective-Optics Space Telescope Axial Replacement) Faint Object Camera (FOC) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in the UV and optical continuum and (O III) emission lines. From these observations the structure of the nuclear region of NGC 1068 is shown to be very complex. Bright filamentary and patchy structures are intermingled with dark lanes. Other interesting features are identified, including the location of the UV peak with respect to the peak of line emission, the existence of an unusual 'twin-crescent' object near the nucleus, and point sources in the field. In the UV to optical flux ratio image, an extended conical region stands out for its blue color which may be tracing reflected nuclear light.
