    Description: SOFA, a device designed for the highly accurate 2 axis pointing of antenna or any feature installed on a spacecraft is described. The major characteristic of this system is complete freedom from friction and wear out, resulting in numerous advantages, such as outstanding precision, virtually endless service life, high simplicity, and reliability. The sizing method is described and performances are analyzed. The results from analogue simulations are presented. A functional model of the electrical and mechanical parts was built and subjected to on ground tests using a 2 axis platform simulating the spacecraft's motions. The results obtained are thoroughly in keeping with the predictions and simulations. Various possible applications of the SOFA system are mentioned.

    Description: The CNES project of a European Complement to GPS (CE-GPS) is conceived to fulfill the needs of Civil Aviation for a non-precise approach phase with GPS as sole navigation means. This generates two missions: a monitoring mission - alarm of failure - ,and a navigation mission - generating a GPS-like signal on board the geostationary satellites. The host satellites will be the Inmarsat constellation. The CE-GPS missions lead to some time requirements, mainly the accuracy of GPS time restitution and of monitoring clock synchronization. To demonstrate that the requirements of the CE-GPS could be achieved, including the time aspects, an experiment has been scheduled over the Last two years, using a part of the Inmarsat II F-2 payload and specially designed ground stations based on 10 channels GPS receivers. This paper presents a review of the results obtained during the continental phase of the CE-GPS experiment with two stations in France, along with some experimental results obtained during the transatlantic phase (three stations in France, French Guyana, and South Africa). It describes the synchronization of the monitoring clocks using the GPS Common-view or the C- to L-Band transponder of the Inmarsat satellite, with an estimated accuracy better than 10 ns (1 sigma).

    Description: Significant progress has been made during the last five years to adapt conventional Navier-Stokes solver for handling nonconservative equations. A primary type of application is to use transport equation turbulence models, but the extension is also possible for describing the transport of nonpassive scalars, such as in reactive media. Among others, combustion and gas dissociation phenomena are topics needing a considerable research effort. An implicit two step scheme based on the well-known MacCormack scheme has been modified to treat compressible turbulent flows on complex geometries. Implicit treatment of nonconservative equations (in the present case a two-equation turbulence model) opens the way to the coupled solution of thermochemical transport equations.

    Description: Enstatite meteorites are the most reduced naturally-occuring materials of the solar system. The cubic monosulfide series with the general formula (Mg,Mn,Ca,Fe)S are common phases in these meteorite groups. The importance of such minerals, their formation, composition and textural relationships for understanding the genesis of enstatite chondrites (EC) and aubrites, has long been recognized (e.g. [1]). However, the mechanisms of formation of these sulfides is still not well constrained certainly because of possible multiple ways to produce them. We propose to simulate different models of formation in order to check their mineralogical, chemical and textural relevancies. The solubility of sulfur in silicate melts is of primary interest for planetary mantles, particularly for the Earth and Mercury. Indeed, these two planets could have formed, at least partly, from EC materials (e.g. [2, 3, 4]). The sulfur content in silicate melts depends on the melt composition but also on pressure (P), temperature (T) and oxygen fugacity fO2. Unfortunately, there is no model of general validity in a wide range of P-T-fO2-composition which describes precisely the evolution of sulfur content in silicate melts, even if the main trends are now known. The second goal of this study is to constrain the sulfur content in silicate melts under reducing conditions and different temperatures.

    Description: Timeliner has been developed as a tool to automate procedural tasks. These tasks may be sequential tasks that would typically be performed by a human operator, or precisely ordered sequencing tasks that allow autonomous execution of a control process. The Timeliner system includes elements for compiling and executing sequences that are defined in the Timeliner language. The Timeliner language was specifically designed to allow easy definition of scripts that provide sequencing and control of complex systems. The execution environment provides real-time monitoring and control based on the commands and conditions defined in the Timeliner language. The Timeliner sequence control may be preprogrammed, compiled from Timeliner "scripts," or it may consist of real-time, interactive inputs from system operators. In general, the Timeliner system lowers the workload for mission or process control operations. In a mission environment, scripts can be used to automate spacecraft operations including autonomous or interactive vehicle control, performance of preflight and post-flight subsystem checkouts, or handling of failure detection and recovery. Timeliner may also be used for mission payload operations, such as stepping through pre-defined procedures of a scientific experiment.

    Description: The correct interpretation of thermal and hydraulic soil parameters infrared from remotely sensed data (thermal infrared, microwaves) implies a good understanding of the causes of their temporal and spatial variability. Given this necessity, the sensitivity of the surface variables (temperature, moisture) to the spatial variability of hydraulic soil properties is tested with a numerical model of heat and mass transfer between bare soil and atmosphere. The spatial variability of hydraulic soil properties is taken into account in terms of the scaling factor. For a given soil, the knowledge of its frequency distribution allows a stochastic use of the model. The results are treated statistically, and the part of the variability of soil surface parameters due to that of soil hydraulic properties is evaluated quantitatively.
