Description: A model for the brightness temperature of a canopy which is based on the physical characteristics of the vegetation is being developed. This model uses the Peake model to relate the scattering coefficient of the vegetation to its radiometric brightness temperature and a discrete scattering model to computer the scattering coefficient. A distorted Born approximation is used to provide a tractable solution to the scattering problem. To verify the theory a comparison has been made with experiments. Radiometric measurements of brightness temperature were made at L- and C-bands over a crop of mature soybeans, along with ground truth measurements. All model input parameters were measured; there were no free parameters to adjust to obtain agreement with the measurements. Results showed that agreement between theory and measurements was reasonable for horizontal polarization at both L- and C-bands with dry underlying soil.

Description: Coupled-mode rate equations for coupled-cavity lasers are derived using a novel approach. The method, based on the Mittag-Leffler theorem, is exact. The coupling coefficients are compared to those derived by several different approximations.

Description: A high-power low-threshold graded-index separate confinement heterostructure AlGaAs single quantum well laser on Si substrates has been demonstrated for the first time by a hybrid growth of migration-enhanced molecular beam epitaxy followed by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy. The quantum well laser showed an output power of more than 400 mW per facet under pulsed conditions. A room-temperature threshold current of 300 mA was obtained with a differential quantum efficiency of 40 percent without facet coating. The threshold current density was 550 A/sq cm for a cavity length of 500 microns. These results show the highest peak power reported to date for low-threshold lasers on Si substrates. The full width at half maximum of the far-field pattern parallel to the junction was 6 deg. Threshold current densities as low as 250 A/sq cm were obtained for lasers on GaAs substrates.

Description: A high-peak-power low-threshold AlGaAs/GaAs double-heterostructure stripe laser diode on Si substrats, grown by hybrid migration-enhanced molecular beam epitaxy (MEMBE) and metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) has been demonstrated for the first time. These devices showed the highest peak powers of up to 184 mW per facet reported so far for double-heterostructure stripe laser diodes on Si substrates, room-temperature pulsed threshold currents as low as 150 mA, and differential quantum efficiencies as high as 30 percent without mirror facet coating. An intrinsic threshold current density has been estimated to be about 2 kA/sq cm when taking current spreading and lateral diffusion effects into account. Low dislocation density shows that MEMBE can be a useful method to grow high-quality GaAs and AlGaAs/GaAs layers on Si substrates by combining with MOCVD.

Description: Broad-area lasers are fabricated with a long (80-100 microns), nonabsorbing window at each end. The window is shown to dramatically improve the spatial mode properties, stabilizing and smoothing the near field, and reducing the far field from 5-15 deg to as low as 2 deg. This improvement comes at the expense of an increase in threshold current and a reduction of quantum efficiency.

Description: A Landsat-4 Thematic Mapper (TM) image of the Wind River Basin area in Wyoming is currently under analysis for stratigraphic and structural mapping and for assessment of spectral and spatial characteristics using visible, near infrared, and short wavelength infrared bands. To estimate the equivalent Lambertian surface reflectance, TM radiance data were calibrated to remove atmospheric and instrumental effects. Reflectance measurements for homogeneous natural and cultural targets were acquired about one year after data acquisition. Calibration data obtained during the analysis were used to calculate new gains and offsets to improve scanner response for earth science applications. It is shown that the principal component images calculated from the TM data were the result of linear transformations of ground reflectance. In images prepared from this transform, the separation of spectral classes was independent of systematic atmospheric and instrumental factors. Several examples of the processed images are provided.

Description: The chlorine monoxide radical, ClO, plays a significant role in the catalytic destruction of ozone in the Earth's stratosphere. Because of its atmospheric importance, ClO has been the subject of numerous observational attempts. In order to deduce ClO concentrations from stratospheric infrared measurements, the infrared spectroscopy of ClO must be well characterized. Approximately 830 individual lines were measured form ClO imfrared spectra with the ClO concentration between 1 x 10 to the 13th power and 6 x 10 to the 13th power molecules per cu cu. The lines were then averaged and fit to a function of m (where m = O, -J or J+1 for the Q,P and R branches respectively) to obtain the band strength, S sub v and the first Herman-Wallis coefficient, alpha. The total S sub v for the two main isotopmers was 13.11 plus or minus 1 cm(-2) atm(-1) while alpha was 0.00412 plus or minus .00062.
