Beschreibung: The thrust vector control systems of the solid rocket boosters are turbine-powered, electrically controlled hydraulic systems which function through hydraulic actuators to gimbal the nozzles of the solid rocket boosters and provide vehicle steering for the Space Shuttle. Turbine power for the thrust vector control systems is provided through hydrazine fueled auxiliary power units which drive the hydraulic pumps. The solid rocket booster auxiliary power unit resulted from trade studies which indicated significant advantages would result if an existing engine could be found to meet the program goal of 20 missions reusability and adapted to meet the seawater environments associated with ocean landings. During its maturation, the auxiliary power unit underwent many design iterations and provided its flight worthiness through full qualification programs both as a component and as part of the thrust vector control system. More significant, the auxiliary power unit has successfully completed six Shuttle missions.

Beschreibung: Multi-dimensional generalizations of a one-dimensional finite element shock capturing scheme are proposed. A scalar model problem is used to emphasize that 'preferred directions' are important in multi-dimensional applications. Schemes are developed for the two-dimensional Euler equations. One, based upon characteristics, employs the Mach lines and streamlines as preferred directions.

Beschreibung: A two-pass explicit scheme is developed in order to exploit some of the capabilities of finite difference modeling (FDM) for finite element modeling (FEM), which offers the opportunity to account for any type of geometry in fluid flow modeling. Features of the first-order upwind and the Lax-Wendroff high precision explicit finite difference algorithms are reviewed. A flux limiter is developed for FEM to serve as an analog for the single limiter function which has been defined for the various FDMs. It is shown that an antidiffusive limiter must be introduced into the weighting function which normally multiplies the time-derivative term in the variational equation. The two-pass scheme which results is demonstrated to be the equivalent of FDMs with five-point support. However, the present scheme is valid only for one-dimensional calculations and linear shape functions for shock tube flow phenomena. Further work is required for its use with nonlinear hyperbolic systems.

Beschreibung: The calculated value of net thrust of an aircraft powered by a General Electric F404-GE-400 afterburning turbofan engine was evaluated for its sensitivity to various input parameters. The effects of a 1.0-percent change in each input parameter on the calculated value of net thrust with two calculation methods are compared. This paper presents the results of these comparisons and also gives the estimated accuracy of the overall net thrust calculation as determined from the influence coefficients and estimated parameter measurement accuracies.

Beschreibung: An improved technique to determine the subreflector translations required to properly focus a Cassegrainian antenna, under gravity loading, at a full range of elevation angles, is presented. This technique is applied to the 34-m antenna configuration installed at stations DSS-15 (Goldstone, California) and DSS-45 (Australia). The subreflector lateral and axial translations, to be stored into the antenna-control systems, are computed and tabulated. The relationships that govern the main parameters are also presented for future subreflector focusing analysis under wind and thermal loadings.

Beschreibung: Design procedures are developed for determining Cassegrain type antenna subreflector positioner strength and displacements under wind and gravity loading conditions. The procedures are applied to the JPL 70-m antenna subreflector design, and the resulting design details are presented. The generalized analysis can be adapted to other antenna and subreflector-positioners. It is shown that the new design meets the strength and displacements criteria under worst case loading.

Beschreibung: An inlet static pressure (PS2) probe was mounted on the hub of an F100 engine in an F-15 airplane. Flight test results showed that for low distortion conditions, the ratio of engine-face total pressure to static pressure agreed well with previous altitude facility data. Off-schedule operation of the inlet third ramp angle caused increased distortion of the inlet airflow during steady-state flight conditions. Data are shown for inlet third ramp excursions leading to engine stall. The relationships of inlet face total to static pressure ratio as a function of several distortion descriptors are also described.
