Beschreibung: The temperature dependence of two chlorine atom reactions of considerable fundamental importance to stratospheric chemistry was studied using the technique of flash photolysis-resonance fluorescence. The reactions of interest were: (1) Cl + O3 yields ClO + O2 studied at 220-350 K, and (2) Cl + CH4 yields CH3 + HCl studied at 218-401 K. In addition, the reaction Cl + H2O2 yields HCl + HO2 was studied at 300 K. The corresponding rate constants are provided for the three reactions. The new rate data implies the need to revise downward by a factor of 2.4-3 the magnitude of the ozone perturbation due to the presence of ClO/x/ species in the stratosphere, predicted by earlier model calculations.

Beschreibung: The paper discusses and evaluates the suggestions made by Machado et al. (1978) on how to reconcile the observed temperature enhancements at temperature-minimum levels in solar flares with some theoretical heating mechanism. The objective is to gain deeper insight into the nature of the photospheric flare. The discussion focuses on the validity of the assumption of H(-) LTE at temperature-minimum levels, as well as on EUV irradiation and Joule heating by steady currents as heating mechanisms. It is found that, unless there are strong inhomogeneities associated with either heating mechanism, neither can reasonably be reconciled with observations. It is concluded that detailed high-resolution (both spatial and temporal) measurements are necessary to further the present understanding of the flare process at temperature-minimum levels.

Beschreibung: EUV data from the Harvard College Observatory and Naval Research Laboratory instruments on board the Skylab Apollo telescope mount, together with SOLRAD 9 X-ray data, are analyzed in order to empirically deduce the variation of emission measure with temperature in the atmosphere of a number of solar flares. A 'mean' differential emission measure profile Q(T) for a flare is constructed which is then compared with the profile predicted by a number of theoretical models. It is found that realistic flare models must include both conductive and radiative terms in the energy equation, and that hydrodynamic terms may be important at low temperatures. The implications of the results obtained are discussed for flare models in general and it is shown that the inclusion of the conductive term into models which have hitherto neglected it can perhaps resolve some of the observational difficulties with such models.

Beschreibung: In a previous paper (1978), the authors developed a method of analyzing the performance of two-photon coherent state (TCS) systems for free-space optical communications. General theorems permitting application of classical point process results to detection and estimation of signals in arbitrary quantum states were derived. The present paper examines the general problem of photoemissive detection statistics. On the basis of the photocounting theory of Kelley and Kleiner (1964) it is shown that for arbitrary pure state illumination, the resulting photocurrent is in general a self-exciting point process. The photocount statistics for first-order coherent fields reduce to those of a special class of Markov birth processes, which the authors term single-mode birth processes. These general results are applied to the structure of TCS radiation, and it is shown that the use of TCS radiation with direct or heterodyne detection results in minimal performance increments over comparable coherent-state systems. However, significant performance advantages are offered by use of TCS radiation with homodyne detection. The abstract quantum descriptions of homodyne and heterodyne detection are derived and a synthesis procedure for obtaining quantum measurements described by arbitrary TCS is given.

Beschreibung: The density of smoke produced by burning or smoldering materials is a factor that affects the ability of occupants to escape from a burning structure and the effectiveness of firefighters. Accordingly, considerable effort is being spent on developing materials that minimize the amount of smoke without impairing their performance characteristics. In the present paper, laboratory tests on such materials are described and evaluated. It is seen that the National Bureau of Standards smoke test and the Ohio State University release-rate test are the most promising for screening materials for smoke evolution. It is shown that, for plastics, smoke obscuration is a more realistic concern than smoke toxicity.

Beschreibung: Homogeneous plane-parallel model atmospheres for solar flares have been constructed to approximately simulate observations of flares. The wings of the Ca II lines have been used to derive flare upper photosphere models, which indicate temperature increases of about 100 K over the temperature distribution in the pre-existing facula at a height of 300 km. In the case of flares covering sunspots the temperature rise seems to occur much higher in the atmosphere. We find that with increasing flare importance the heights of the upper chromosphere and transition region occur lower in the solar atmosphere, accounting for the factor of 60-600 increase in pressure in these regions relative to the quiet sun. The Ca II line profiles agree with observations only by assuming a macrovelocity distribution that increases with height. Also, the chromospheric parts of flares appear to be highly inhomogeneous. We show that shock and particle heated flare models do not agree with the observations and propose a thermal response model for flares. In particular, it appears that heating in the photosphere is an essential aspect of flares.

Beschreibung: Statistical examination of animal response data obtained using Procedure B of the USF toxicity screening test method indicates that the data deviate only slightly from a normal or Gaussian distribution. This slight departure from normality is not expected to invalidate conclusions based on theoretical statistics. Comparison of times to staggering, convulsions, collapse, and death as endpoints shows that time to death appears to be the most reliable endpoint because it offers the lowest probability of missed observations and premature judgements.
