    Beschreibung: This experiment obtained imagery of the earth and the moon at a series of wavelength intervals in the near ultraviolet. These photographs were used to aid in the interpretation of the UV appearance of other planets in the solar system, especially mars and venus. The filter and film characteristics are described, as well as the ozone absorption coefficient curve.

    Beschreibung: An experiment centering around a mass spectrometer is described, which is aimed at the identification of organic substances present in the top 10 cm of the surface of Mars and an analysis of the atmosphere for major and minor constituents as well as isotopic abundances. In addition, an indication of the abundance of water in the surface and some information concerning the mineralogy can be obtained by monitoring the gases produced upon heating the soil sample. The organic material will simply be expelled by heating to 150, 300, and 500 C into the carrier gas stream of a gas chromatograph interfaced to the mass spectrometer or by slowly heating the sample in direct communication with the spectrometer. It is planned to analyze a total of up to nine soil samples in order to study diurnal and seasonal variations. The system is designed to give useful data even for minor constituents if the total of organics should be as low as 5 ppm. The spectrometer covers the mass range of 12-200 with adequate resolution.

    Beschreibung: Preliminary experiments were carried out to investigate the effectiveness of proton irradiation for producing organic chromophores. The source of the 2 MeV protons used in the experiments was a model Van de Graaff accelerator. The gas cells used were hollow aluminum cylinders. The test results show that energetic protons can be an effective energy source for the formation of complex molecules from simple ones. With the exception of sulfide compounds none of the molecules that were identified are colored. However, coloring agents could be contained in unresolvable fractions.

    Beschreibung: Several models for the atmosphere of Titan have been investigated, taking into account various combinations of neon and argon. The investigation shows that the addition of large amounts of Ne and/or Ar will substantially reduce the hydrogen abundance required for a given greenhouse effect. The fact that a large amount of neon should be present if the atmosphere is a relic of the solar nebula is an especially attractive feature of the models, because it is hard to justify appropriate abundances of other enhancing agents.

    Beschreibung: Attention is given to 1.2 years of data from two Michelson-Gale long fluid tiltmeters, one long center pressure tiltmeter, and a shallow borehole tiltmeter, which have been in operation at Pinon Flat Observatory in Southern California. The most stable tilt record shows a secular rate of 0.28 microrad/a, which may be real. Comparisons undertaken among instruments have identified more and less successful measurement techniques. It is concluded that even the best existing sensors must be improved in order to measure continuous tectonic motions.

    Beschreibung: Ground based telescopic observations of Titan and outer planet atmospheres are evaluated for their abundances and an effort is made to deduce the various hydrogen-to-carbon ratios. Jupiter and Saturn atmospheres seem to have roughly solar abundances as far as hydrogen and methane are concerned; for Uranus, Titan and Neptune these ratios are way down.

    Beschreibung: The 3-0 rotation-vibration band of carbon monoxide was identified in the near-infrared spectrum of Titan. A preliminary mixing ratio of CO/N2 = 0.00006 was determined. This result supports the probable detection of CO by Samuelson et al and strengthens possible analogies between the atmosphere of Titan and conditions on the primitive earth.     Beschreibung: There have been three recent reports of the detection of Lyman-alpha radiation (due to atomic hydrogen, H, at wavelength 1,216 A) from Uranus by means of the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite. The interpretations of these results differ. Two reports conclude that there is a strong aurora on Uranus, but the third concludes that the source is resonance scattering of solar Lyman-alpha. This paper reports the detection of emission features due to molecular hydrogen, H2, near 1,600 A. This detection is near the limit of the IUE sensitivity. If it is real, the detection of H2 emission strongly supports the conclusion that Uranus has an aurora comparable in strength with those of the inner two giant planets, Jupiter and Saturn. The first published IUE spectra of the Saturn aurora are also presented.

    Beschreibung: From 2000 to 3000 A, both Uranus and Neptune have albedos that are about two times higher than Jupiter or Saturn's, implying that the outer giants have stratospheres that are relatively free of aerosol absorption. Uncertainties in the absolute calibration procedure allow discrepancies of order 15% between conservative models and the observations. A small amount of aerosol absorption is therefore possible. Below 2000 A the derived albedo is highly dependent on the solar spectrum source used in the data reduction. The most recent result for Uranus, first reported here, is consistent with a secular change in C2H2 mixing ratio from approximately three times ten to the minus eight in 1980 to less than or equal to ten to the minus ninth in 1983. These values are approximately 2 orders of magnitude less than the mixing ratios of this gas on Saturn, and comparable to the amount on Jupiter.
