Description: Motional narrowing of the transverse-field muon spin rotation signal was observed in gamma-TiH(x) for x = 1.83, 1.97, and 1.99. An analysis of the data for TiH1.99 near room temperature indicates that the mechanism responsible for the motion of the muon out of the octahedral site is thermally activated diffusion with an attempt frequency comparable to the optical vibrations of the lattice. Monte Carlo calculations to simulate the effect of muon and proton motion upon the muon field-correlation time were used to interpret the motional narrowing in TiH1.97 near 500 K. The interpretation is dependent upon whether the Bloembergen, Purcell, and Pound (BPP) theory or an independent spin-pair relaxation model is used to obtain the vacancy jump rate from proton NMR T1 measurements. Use of BPP theory shows that the field-correction time can be obtained if the rate of motion of the muon with respect to the rate of the motion for the protons is decreased. An independent spin-pair relaxation model indicates that the field-correlation time can be obtained if the rate of motion for the nearest-neighbor protons is decreased.

Description: When a 6V Eveready Energizer Battery, 528, is discharged, heat is produced internally within the battery itself. Detailed measurements of this battery heat were made for a five day discharge period using a load resistance of 20 ohms and an ambient temperature of 10 C. The battery heat produced per quarter day varied considerably, ranging from 1.08 watt-hrs to 2.63 watt-hrs. The total battery heat produced, using a 3.0 volt cutoff, is significant (37 watt-hrs) when compared to the total load heat produced (70 watt-hrs).

Description: A common problem in acquiring ground-truth data for use in microwave interaction modeling is the capture of surface roughness data that are both sampled at distances comparable to a fraction of the wavelength and extensive enough to represent the surface statistics in at least one resolution cell of the microwave remote sensor used. A technique has been developed for acquiring the necessary photogrammetric data using twin 70-mm film cameras mounted on a helicopter boom. The apparatus is described, and the accuracy with which ground surface roughness can be characterized using this device is estimated. Both standard and cross-correlation methods were used for data reduction. Stereogrammetry is compared with a completely automated image-matching technique. Dense disparity images were generated from the helicopter stereo pairs. Using interior orientation parameters supplied by the camera manufacturers, and assuming that exterior orientation parameters remain constant between control target and test field photography, an extremely dense DEM (digital elevation model) for a test field has been derived. Results are compared, and accuracy estimates are presented.

Description: In a class of grand unified theories containing SO(10), cosmologically significant axion and neutrino energy densities are obtainable naturally. To obtain large scale structure, both components of dark matter are considered to exist with comparable energy densities. To obtain large scale structure, inflationary and non-inflationary scenarios are considered, as well as scenarios with and without vacuum strings. It is shown that inflation may be compatible with recent observations of the mass density within galaxy clusters and superclusters, especially if strings are present.

Description: It is argued that the cosmic gamma-ray background (CGB) spectrum does not exhibit evidence for the decay of light gravitinos, in contradiction to the suggestion by Olive and Silk (1985), who observed a bump near 1 MeV in the CGB radiation spectrum. It is suggested that better fits to the CGB spectrum would be provided by mechanisms generating a power-law spectrum which is flattened below about 2 MeV. Olive and Silk maintain that the decays of a long-lived particle such as the gravitino may be responsible for features in the gamma-ray spectrum near 1 MeV.

Description: The static stiffnesses for torsional and flexural deformation of a tapered beam under axial loading are determined analytically, extending the Bernoulli-Euler/Bessel-function approach of Banerjee and Williams (1985). The derivation of the expressions is explained in detail, and numerical results for sample problems are presented in tables and shown to be in excellent agreement with those obtained using stepped beams of 400 or 500 elements.

Description: An analysis is presented of the shear buckling load of an arbitrary simply-supported prismatic plate assembly or stiffened panel configuration. The method utilizes stiffness matrices developed by Wittrick (1968). For the restraint of simple support along edges perpendicular to the longitudinal direction, various wavelengths of response are combined using an energy method that involves only a boundary integral. Numerical results for plate and panel configurations show the accuracy and convergence of the method.

Description: Tests showed that bipolar chips in the attitude control computer of the Galileo spacecraft would likely cause catastrophic mission failure due to single particle upset. This paper describes the design and testing of CMOS replacements which are speed compatible with the bipolar parts and are immune to upset by 165-MeV krypton ions.
