    Description: The oxygen isotopes ratios of benthic foraminifera and detailed radiocarbon ages of the organic matter of an over 15 m long sediment core from the outer Niger delta allow us to date the oxygen isotope stage boundaries 1/2 to 11500 (+/- 650) years BP, 2/3 to approximately 23000 (+/- 2000) years BP. The composition of the predominantly terrigenous clays and accessory pelagic fossils reflects the evolution of the climate over the southwestern Sahel zone and the response of the Eastern Tropical Atlantic to these climatic fluctuations during the Late Quaternary. The dilution of the pelagic fossil concentrations by the terrigenous material and the oxygen isotopes ratios of planktonic foraminifera indicate large fluctuations in the freshwater discharge from the Niger, with high precipitations over the drainage area of this river from 4500 (+/- 300) to 11500 (+/- 650) years BP and from 11800 (+(- 600) to 13000 (+/- 600) years BP while the time intervals in between were as dry as today. Relative increase of kaolinite during wet phases and the association of smectite, chlorite and attapulgite during dry ones characterize the response of the weathering in the Niger drainage basins to the climatic fluctuations. The occurrence of 10-14 A mixed-layers prior to 26000 years BP is correlated with moderate alteration of the crystalline substratum outcrops from the middle-lower part of the Niger Basin. High quartz concentrations are particularly typical for the transition between oxygen isotope stages 1 and 2 at the inception of heavy precipitations in the southern Sahel zone. Sedimentation rates were quite constant, 30-35 cm/1000 years; they became unusually large at the beginning of the Holocene from 10900 (+/- 650) to 11500 (+/- 650) years BP where they reached more than 600 cm/1000 years. Bottom waters around 1100 m depth in the Gulf of Guinea responded to changes in paleo-oceanography of the entire Atlantic Ocean as well as to local influences. Abnormal carbon isotopes ratios and the drastic changes from a highly diversified fauna (during stages 2 and 3. and during the last part of stage 1 after approx. 7000 years BP) to a poorly diversified fauna in the intervenin time span point to the development of a local benthic environment which cannot easily be compared with the corresponding continental and slope environments of the entire Atlantic Ocean.

    Description: At Site 585 of Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 89 more than 500 m of volcaniclastic to argillaceous middle-Late Cretaceous sediments were recovered. Analyses by X-ray diffraction (bulk sediment and clay fraction), transmission electron microscopy, molecular and atomic absorption, and electron microprobe were done on Site 585 samples. We identify four successive stages and interpret them as the expression of environments evolving under successive influences: Stage 1, late Aptian to early Albian - subaerial and proximal volcanism, chiefly expressed by the presence of augite, analcite, olivine, celadonite, small and well-shaped transparent trioctahedral saponite, Al hydroxides, Na, Fe, Mg, and various trace elements (Mn, Ni, Cr, Co, Pb, V, Zn, Ti). Stage 2, early to middle Albian - submarine and less proximal volcanic influence, characterized by dioctahedral and hairy Mg-beidellites, a paucity of analcite and pyroxenes, the presence of Mg and K, and local alteration of Mg-smectites to Mg-chlorites. Stage 3, middle Albian to middle Campanian - early marine diagenesis, marked by the development of recrystallization from fleecy smectites to lathed ones (all of alkaline Si-rich Fe-beidellite types), by the development of opal CT and clinoptilolite, and by proximal to distal volcanic influences (Na parallel to Ti, K). Local events consist of the supply of reworked palygorskite during the Albian-Cenomanian, and the recurrence of proximal volcanic activity during the early Campanian. Stage 4, late Campanian to Maestrichtian - development of terrigenous supply resulting from the submersion of topographic barriers; this terrigenous supply is associated with minor diagenetic effects and is marked by a clay diversification (beidellite, illite, kaolinite, palygorskite), the rareness of clay recrystallizations, and the disappearance of volcanic markers.

    Description: The clay mineralogy of four 5.5- to 13.5-m-long cores sampled between 45° and 60°N in the North Atlantic Ocean has been investigated at high latitudes within a well-constrained chronostratigraphic scale. Cross-correlation spectral analyses have been performed on both clay mineral and delta18O planktonic records. Detrital clay minerals display strong signals which are coherent with the delta18O record, within the three main Milankovitch frequency bands (eccentricity, obliquity, and precession). The climatic control on clay mineral sedimentation largely depends on the latitudinal location of the sediment cores. The 100,000-year signal occurs as a uniformly acting factor, whereas the 41,000-year signal dominates clay sedimentation at high latitudes and the 23,000-year signal dominates at midlatitudes. We suggest that the latitudinal variations of the orbital forcing on the detrital clay mineral distribution in the North Atlantic Ocean not only result from climatic control of the intensity of physical and chemical weathering, but also from latitudinal control on the detrital clay supply linked to influences of the high-latitude wind-driven and midlatitude ocean-driven transportation processes, respectively.

    Description: Late Cretaceous and Cenozoic sediments deposited on the eastern and western sides of the Shatsky Rise show similar clay assemblages of chlorite, illite, mixed layers, smectite, kaolinite, and palygorskite, and a similar vertical differentiation into three units. The deep-sea pelagic red clay is dominated by terrigenous components, which suggests that diagenesis is minor in this part of the western North Pacific and that eolian supply is very important. The role of the Shatsky Rise as a submarine barrier is of minor importance. The volcanic contribution to the clay component appears very small, as in some other parts of the Pacific Ocean. Stratigraphic correlations between Sites 576 and 578, which can be made from mineralogical data, partly offset the rareness of biostratigraphic markers.
