Description: DSDP Leg 26, is the fifth cruise of D/V Glomar Challenger in the Indian Ocean, and the first cruise of Phase III of the Deep Sea Drilling Project. The Indian Ocean is the smallest of the three major ocean basins but appears to be geologically the most complex. The sites drilled on Leg 26 were selected to try to elucidate a number of specific problems of both local and broad regional significance, as well as to add to the general knowledge of the area. In particular: a) To locate the oldest sediment in the Indian Ocean and thus possibly the date of the initial breakup of Gondwanaland (Sites 250, 256, 257); b) To determine the effects of the initiation of the Circumpolar Current on southern Indian Ocean sedimentation (Sites 250, 252, 256, 257, 258); c) To determine the history of spreading of the Southwest Branch of the Indian Ocean Ridge and the history of the crust and oceanic sedimentation in that general region (Sites 250, 251, 252).

Description: A submersible study has been conducted in February - March 1978 at the axis of the East Pacific Rise near 21°N. The expedition CYAMEX, the first submersible program to be conducted on the East Pacific Rise, is part of the French-American-Mexican project RITA (Rivera - Tamayo), a 3-year study devoted to detailed geological and geophysical investigations of the East Pacific Rise Crest. On the basis of the 15 dives made by CYANA in the axial area of the Rise, a morphological and tectonic zonation can be established for this moderately-fast spreading center. A narrow, 0.6 to 1.2 km wide zone of extrusion (zone 1), dominated by young lava flows, is flanked by a highly fissured and faulted zone of extension (zone 2) with a width of 1 to 2 km. Further out, zone 3 is dominated by outward tilted blocks bounded by inward-facing fault scarps. Active or recent faults extend up to 12 km from the axis of extrusion of the East Pacific Rise. This represents the first determination from direct field evidence of the width of active tectonism associated with an accreting plate boundary. Massive sulfide deposits, made principally of zinc, copper and iron, were found close to the axis of the Rise. Other signs of the intense hydrothermal activity included the discovery of benthic fauna of giant size similar to that found at the axis of the Galapagos Rift. We emphasize the cyclic character of the volcanicity. The main characteristics of the geology of this segment of the East Pacific Rise can be explained by the thermal structure at depth below this moderately-fast spreading center. The geological observations are compatible with the existence of a shallow magma reservoir centered at the axis of the Rise with a half-width of the order of 10 km.

Description: Cruise MN-74-01 of the R/V Moana Wave was the first part of the field work of the NSF-IDOE Inter-University Ferromanganese Research Program in 1974. This program was designed to investigate the origin, growth, and distribution of copper/nickel-rich manganese nodules in the Pacific Ocean. The field effort was designed to satisfy sample requirements of the 15 principal investigators, while increasing general knowledge of the copper/nickel-rich nodule deposits of the equatorial Pacific. This report is the first of a series of cruise reports designed to assist sample requests for documented nodules, sediment, and water samples so the laboratory results can be realistically compared and related to the environment of nodule growth.

Description: Site 79 is located on the crest of the equatorial Pacific sediment belt (Ewing and others, 1968) and is the westernmost of a series of sites (79, 81, 82 and 83) that follow the crest of this belt eastward to and across the crest of the oceanic ridge, locally known as the East Pacific Rise. The purpose of these sites is two-fold: 1) to study variations in biostratigraphy and sediment type from west to east across the Pacific and 2) to paleontologically date basement and determine the rate of spreading of the Pacific plate since the time of deposition of the oldest sediments at Site 77.

    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: Forty basaltic rocks collected by submersible during the Cyamex expedition (1978) on the East PacifIc Rise at 21°N, a moderately fast spreading segment (6 cm/year opening rate) of the mid-ocean ridge, consist of angular pillow fragments and glass buds, sheet-flow slabs and samples of columnar pillars standing in collapsed fossillava pools. Most of the rocks are from the crestal are a of the Rise. The collection shows a striking petrographic homogeneity wh en compared with the range of basalts found on other segments of midocean ridges: olivine-phyric, or highly plagioclase-phyric rocks, so common in the slowspreading Famous are a in the Atlantic, are absent. All samples are typical lowpotassium oceanic tholeiites with a limited fractionation trend. Pillow-lavas, thin and thick sheet-flows cannot be distinguished by their major element compositions, as in the Galapagos rift which has the same spreading rate as the EPR at 21°N. Further, ferrobasalts have been described from the Galapagos rift, but do not appear in the Cyamex rocks. In the Cyamex area, olivine and plagioclase are the main silicate phases, and clinopyroxene is absent. In the pillows and sheet-flow samples, four generations of olivine and plagioclase crystals are distinguished. Samples from the fossillava pools are aphyric. The corresponding magma batches are presumed to have migrated rapidly through the magma chamber, and to have been extruded in large volumes, possibly during episodes ofhigh instantaneous opening rate. Fe-Ni and Fe-Cu-rich sulphide phases are common in an lava types as massive globules scatterred through the glass, or as microglobules decorating the walls of empty vesicles. Palagonite and Fe-Mn oxide thicknesses across the strike of the Rise indicate relative ages compatible with successive extrusions at the Rise axis.

(eds.), Initial Reports of the Deep Sea Drilling Project (U.S. Govt. Printing Office), 68, 445-453, https://doi.org/10.2973/dsdp.proc.68.119.1982
    Publication Date: 2023-07-09
Description: Analyses of stable isotopes of monospecific planktonic foraminifers (G. quadrilobatus group) and monogeneric benthic foraminifers (Cibicidoides spp.) from late Neogene Atlantic Site 502 and Pacific Site 503 were conducted in order to determine the paleoceanographic changes resulting from the late Neogene uplift of the Panama Isthmus and from climatic cooling. In general, results at each site are similar to those from previous studies for the late Miocene and late Pliocene time interval, documenting the late Miocene (6 Ma) shift in carbon isotopes and the inferred growth of permanent Northern Hemisphere continental ice sheets beginning about 3.2 Ma. Comparison of Atlantic-Pacific planktonic-benthic isotope data for four stratigraphic intervals (~6-8, ~5-6, ~3-5, and ~2-3 Ma) suggests that increasing isolation of Atlantic and Pacific low-latitude waters may be related to the emergence of the Panama Isthmus. The contrast between Atlantic and Pacific benthic foraminiferal d13C increased in two steps from 0.60 per mil to 1 per mil (the modern contrast) at about 6 Ma and 3 Ma. The first increase (0.15 per mil) may represent the end of previously limited deep-water communication between the Atlantic and Pacific at the present location of Panama. The second increase (0.25 per mil) may be due to increased production of North Atlantic Deep Water. This probably reflects the development of modern deep-sea circulation. The d18O of planktonic foraminifers begins to increase in Atlantic Site 502 at 4.2 Ma and may reflect the increasing salinity of the North Atlantic Ocean arising from diminishing surface-water exchange across Panama. This increase is clearly shown by contrasting the d18O of Atlantic and Pacific planktonic foraminifers, as well as the d18O of planktonic and benthic foraminifers at Site 502. This inferred increase in surface-water salinity begins at the time of increasing provinciality of Atlantic and Pacific planktonic foraminifers.
