Description: Bear Seamount (39° 55'N, 67° 30'W) is an extinct undersea volcano located inside the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone south of Georges Bank. The fauna associated with the seamount was little known until twenty trawl stations were made 2-7 December 2000, by the NOAA ship Delaware II. The objective of the cruise was to begin to document the biodiversity on and over the seamount, particularly of fishes, cephalopods, and crustaceans. Representatives of most species were preserved as vouchers and for subsequent definitive identification. Preliminary identifications indicate the capture of 115 fish species. Among these were a number of new fish records for the area or rare species, including Acromycter pertubator (Congridae), Alepocephalus bairdii (Alepocephalidae), Mirognathus normani (Alepocephalidae), Bathygadus favosus (Bathygadidae), Nezumia longebarbata (Macrouridae), Gaidropsarus argentatus (Phycidae), and Dibranchus tremendus (Ogcocephalidae). Only two fish species of potential commercial importance were encountered: Coryphaenoides rupestris and Macrourus berglax. Cephalopods comprised 26 species in 15 families, including one new distributional record and several rarelycollected species. The crustacean fauna was diverse with at least 46 species. Totals for other invertebrate species are pending laboratory identification, but number at least 113 species in 10 phyla. This includes a number of new distributional records and a new species of gorgonian.

In: Paull, CK; Matsumoto, R; Wallace, PJ; Dillon, WP (eds.) Proceedings of the Ocean Drilling Program, Scientific Results, College Station, TX (Ocean Drilling Program), 164, 1-12, https://doi.org/10.2973/odp.proc.sr.164.207.2000
    Publication Date: 2024-01-09
Description: The isotopic characteristics of CH4 (d13C values range from -101.3 per mil to -61.1 per mil PDB, and dD values range from -256 per mil to -136 per mil SMOW) collected during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 164 indicate that the CH4 was produced by microbial CO2 reduction and that there is not a significant contribution of thermogenic CH4 to the sampled sediment gas from the Blake Ridge. The isotopic values of CO2 (d13C range -20.6 per mil to +1.24 per mil PDB) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC; d13C range -37.7 per mil to +10.8 per mil PDB) have parallel profiles with depth, but with an offset of 12.5 per mil. Distinct downhole variations in the carbon isotopic composition of CH4 and CO2 cannot be explained by closed-system fractionation where the CO2 is solely derived from the locally available sedimentary organic matter (d13C -2.0 per mil ± 1.4 per mil PDB) and the CH4 is derived from CO2 reduction. The observed isotopic profiles reflect the combined effects of upwards gas migration and decreased microbial activity with depth.

In:  Supplement to: Singh, Raj K; Gupta, Anil K (2005): Late Oligocene-Miocene paleoceanographic evolution of the southeastern Indian Ocean: evidence from deep-sea benthic foraminifera (ODP Site 757). Marine Micropaleontology, 51(1-2), 153-170, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.marmicro.2003.10.003
    Publication Date: 2024-01-09
Description: We quantitatively analyzed deep-sea benthic foraminifera from 〉125 µm size fraction from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 757 to understand deep-sea paleoceanographic changes in the southeastern Indian Ocean during the late Oligocene-Miocene (26.5–5.35 Ma). We used the knowledge of the ecology of Recent deep-sea benthic foraminifera for environmental interpretations. Factor and cluster analyses were run using percentages of 46 highest-ranked species that helped identify six biofacies defining six clusters of samples. The faunal data document a major shift in deep-sea ventilation, organic carbon flux and productivity at ~8.3 Ma, coinciding with the major intensification of the Indian Ocean monsoon system. This marks a change from cold and well-oxygenated deep waters with low and pulsed organic carbon flux during 26.5 to ~8.3 Ma to oxygen-poor deep waters with sustained flux of organic matter. From 15.0 to 7.6 Ma, the deep-sea currents were stronger in the southeastern Indian Ocean probably due to major expansion of the East Antarctic ice sheet and increased production of deep waters and in turn increased deep-sea circulation. The productivity increased in the Indo-Pacific region in the late Miocene and the modern monsoon regime probably established at 8.3 Ma.
