Description / Table of Contents: Summary In the n-alkylammonium derivates of mica-type layer silicates with low layer charge the n-alkylammonium ions lie flatly between the silicate layers with the chain axes parallel to the silicate layers. They form monolayers, double layers or pseudotrimolecular layers. The arrangement depends upon the layer charge and the chain length.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The dimethyldioctadecylammonium derivatives of swelling mica-type layer silicates can be used in GS-chromatography for the separation of aromatic hydrocarbons. Symmetrical peaks are formed. The separation is different for the different layer silicates, it is particularly good with the higher charged silicates. Simple models for the arrangement and orientation of the dimethyldioctadecylammonium ions onto the internal and external surfaces of the layer silicates and their influence to the gaschromatographic behaviour are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In then-alkylammonium derivatives of mica-type layer silicates with a layer charge of 0,55–0,75 eq/(Si, Al)4O10 unit, eachn-alkylammonium ion occupies an area of 33–45 Å2 on the internal surfaces. Since this area is larger than the cross section of the alkyl chains, the chains are tilted against the silicate layers with angles between 50 and 60°. The arrangement can be more or less regular, depending on the vermiculites.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary With mica-type layer-silicates there is a linear relationship between the basal plane spacingsd and the layer charge (x+y), if the exchangeable cations M+ are replaced by long-chainn-alkylammonium ions and the swelling water by long-chainn-alkanols. At room-temperature (20 °C) the basal spacingd (Å) is given byd=1,4(x+y)·(n K −n A )+2n A +9,6 [Å] ifn A ,n K =8,n A ≧n K (n K =number of carbon-atoms in the alkyl-chain of the cations,n A =number of carbon-atoms in the alkylchain of then-alkanol). The charge (x+y) can be evaluated from basal spacing measurements in mineral samples even with high content of impurities.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The variation of the basal spacings of the n-alkanol complexes of n-alkylammonium mica-type layer silicates has been investigated in the temperature range between 20 °C and 140 °C. A low temperature form and a high temperature form must be distinguished. In both forms the basal spacings decrease in steps of 1.0–1.3 Å with rising temperature. The steps are explained by formation of kinks in the alkyl chains of the alkanol molecules and the n-alkylammonium ions which are arranged in a “bimolecular” film between the silicate layers. For the structure of the high temperature form a “jog” model is discussed.
