Notes: The growth rates, lengths at maturity, fecundity and natural mortality of several cichlids of importance in trawl catches in Lake Malawi are described. Growth rates were determined by analysis of length frequency data from trawl catches. The breeding season for each species was determined by monthly examination of the gonads, and fecundity determined by egg counts from ripe ovaries. Lengths at maturity were calculated from the proportion of mature fish during breeding seasons. Natural mortality rates were determined from length frequency data from an unfished area of the lake. Values of the growth constant K ranged from 0.487 to 0.671. The ratio of length at maturity to asymptotic length varied from 0.56 to 0.82. Growth parameters are compared with those of other cichlids. Most species mature in their third year. Fecundity was proportional to the square of the length in four of the five species. The species studied appeared to produce only one batch of eggs per breeding season. Instantaneous natural mortality rates ranged from 0.92 to 1.69.

Notes: [Auszug] Little is known about the origins of globular clusters, which contain hundreds of thousands of stars in a volume only a few light years across. Radiation pressure and winds from luminous young stars should disperse the star-forming gas and disrupt the formation of the cluster. Globular clusters ...

Notes: Exploratory trawl data were used to define demersal fish stocks of Lake Malawi in terms of abundance by depth and area. The mean weight of the catch generally declined with increasing depth. A comparison of initial standing stock estimates and the yield from a commercial fishery over a 7 year period suggests a potential yield of less than half of the initial stock. Over 160 species of fish have been identified in the trawl catch of which over 80% by weight were cichlids. Some of the commonest species of cichlids are listed. The composition of the catch in the heavily exploited southern end of the lake has changed from one dominated by large species of Haplochromis sp. and Lethrinops sp. to one dominated by smaller species.

Notes: Abstract An experimental study of the near tip deformation fields for a Single Edge-Cracked specimen (SEC) has been completed. The surface deformation fields for a thin SEC plexiglas specimen have been obtained in the region 0.15 〈- r/t 〈- 0.60, where r is radial distance from the crack tip and t is the specimen thickness, by using a novel computer vision method. The results of the study indicate that the value of the J-Integral obtained from the measured surface deformation, and under the assumption of plane stress linearly elastic behavior, is essentially path independent over a region that is considered to be within the crack tip three-dimensional zone by researchers who have performed tests on other materials. However, the near-tip, in-plane displacement field does show a deviation from the traditional linear elastic crack tip singularity over the same region, suggesting the need for further studies to address this inconsistency.

Notes: Abstract Scattered-light photoelasticity can be utilized in locating ‘critical’ stress points in a structural component and can be further utilized in experimentally reshaping the structural component's surface to minimize stress in critical regions. The theory and techniques to accomplish this experimental design are noted in the paper.

Notes: Abstract A technique involving sandwich-speckle interferometry has been investigated for application in making strain measurements on rotating structures. The technique has proven to be effective in relaxing stringent timing requirements for recording laser photographs and provides extended ranges of displacement measurement. Application of the technique to an experimental rotating specimen has demonstrated the potential of the method for making accurate strain measurements.

Notes: Abstract A detailed evaluation of the feasibility of determining displacements and displacement gradients from measured surface displacement fields is presented. An improved methodology for both the estimation and elimination of noise is proposed. The methodology is used to analyze the gradients for three tests: (1) uniform rotation, (2) uniform strain, and (3) crack-tip displacement fields. Results of the study indicate that the proposed methodology can be used to extract the underlying two-dimensional displacements and their corresponding gradients from the noisy data with reasonable accuracy. Specifically, it is shown that (a) the digital correlation method for acquiring displacement fields has an error in strain of approximately 150 μ strain at each point, (b) the average strain in a region of uniform strain has much less error, typically on the order of 20 μ strain, (c) the displacement ‘nolse’ present in digital correlation is very small, approximately 0.01 pixels, (d) the proposed methodology for reducing noise in the data is essential to the accurate evaluation of displacement gradients and (e) the successful evaluation of displacement and displacement gradients for all three cases indicates that the proposed methodology can be used both to quantify the displacement fields and to reasonably estimate the overall gradient trends.

Notes: Abstract The work reported herein is concerned with an investigation of the potential of mating time-average holography and static-finite-element analysis (a ‘hybrid’ stress-analysis technique) in solving dynamic problems. The model studied is a vibrating thin rectangular cantilever plate. Realtime holography was used to locate natural vibrating modes of the plate. Experimental data were smoothed to remove scatter using a spline-like procedure in one or two dimensions, as applicable. Two methods of smoothing the experimental displacement data used in the hybrid procedure were considered. The first involved preprocessing (smoothing) the data before they were incorporated into the numerical model, while the second involved smoothing the data as part of the solution process. In both instances the amount of smoothing was specified by the user. The first and fourth vibrational modes were investigated. The results were compared to a NASTRAN dynamic solution and to a Ritz method series solution with very good results.

Notes: Abstract An ultra-high-speed camera utilizing an acousto-optic device for deflecting light rays is described. The system employs a pulsed-ruby-laser light source used in conjunction with a Cranz-Schardin-type camera thus utilizing the best features of both systems for recording a sequence of photographs. The system has been demonstrated at framing rates of up to 200,000 frames/s and has the potential for considerably faster operation. It features the capability of producing a sequence of dynamic photographs in which the time between succesive exposures can be independently varied. Thus, the frequency at which photographs are obtained can be increased during the times of greatest interest. Experimental results demonstrating these features are given.
