Notes: The x-ray structure (λ〈10 A(ring)) of the DPF-78 discharge was investigated with different heavy-gas admixtures to a basic D2 filling. A possible classification of plasma features is proposed. Micropinches with an unusual high aspect ratio of about 10:1 were found. Soft x-ray spectra of single micropinches were registered on film. The use of x-ray spectroscopic methods by means of spectra simulation codes allowed us to estimate the parameters of particular types of pinches with axial size of 0.5 mm and full radial size of 0.05 mm. In the He-like ionization state we obtained ne≈3×1021 cm−3 and Te≈0.8 keV. The electron temperature determined in the H-like ionization stage was considerably higher, Te≈2 keV, indicating a strong ionizing plasma. Possible deviations from the Bennett condition are discussed in connection with the spectroscopic results. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A simple design for a heatable, coolable, rotatable sample manipulator, suitable for ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) applications, is described. Highlights of the design include using a combination power/thermocouple feedthrough for heating, cooling, and temperature measurement; and the use of primarily "off-the-shelf'' components available from most UHV components vendors. The described manipulator is capable of sample cooling to ∼100 K, sample heating to above 900 K, while maintaining 360° of rotary motion, ∼1 in. of x and y motion, and 2 in. of z motion. The apparatus can be assembled for approximately $5500 (all new parts) and uses about 3 3l of liquid N2 per day. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The UV-B and desiccation-tolerant terrestrial cyanobacterium Nostoc commune was grown under defined UV irradiation. Proteome changes were monitored in the membrane and the cytosolic and the extracellular fractions. Tools were developed to separate stress-triggered from growth stage-dependent changes. UV-B changed the relative cellular concentration of 493 out of 1350 protein spots at least by a factor of three, rendering the UV-B stimulon of N. commune the most complex one described so far. It comprises two different parts: an early shock response influencing 214 proteins and a late accli-mation response involving 279 proteins. The shock response comprised many membrane or membrane-associated proteins, whereas the acclimation re-sponse mainly changed cytosolic proteins. Most of the shock-induced changes were transient and did not overlap with the acclimation response. In the extracellular fraction, UV irradiation induced superoxide dismutase and the water stress protein. In total, 27 intracellular, UV-B-induced proteins were partially sequenced by electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry. Three functional classes were identified: proteins involved in lipid metabolism, in carbohydrate metabolism and in regulatory pathways. About 50% of the sequenced proteins were homologous to cyanobacterial database entries with un-known function. Interestingly, all of these proteins belong to the UV-B acclimation response. We conclude that the UV-B shock response and the UV-B acclimation response represent two completely different and remarkably complex strategies of N. commune to protect itself against UV-B radiation in its natural environment.

Notes: Abstract: Random walks in one-dimensional environments with an additional dynamical feedback-coupling is analyzed numerically. The feedback introduced via a generalized master equation is controlled by a memory kernel of strength the explicit form of which is motivated by arguments used in mode-coupling theories. Introducing several realizations of the feedback mechanism within the simulations we obtain for a negative memory term, , superdiffusion in the long time limit while a positive memory leads to localization of the particle. The numerical simulations are in agreement with recent predictions based on renormalization group techniques. A slight modification of the model including an exponentially decaying memory term and some possible applications for glasses and supercooled liquids are suggested. The relation to the true self-avoiding is discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Im südwestlichen Saudi Arabien, nahe der Stadt Taif, wurden 1991 24 Waldrappe (Geronticus eremita) festgestellt, darunter ein Trupp von 15 Vögeln.
Notes: Summary 24 Bald Ibises (Geronticus eremita) in four groups were recorded during 1991 in an area of only approx. 8 km2, close to Taif in southwestern Saudi Arabia. These observations lead to the conclusion that the eastern population of the Bald Ibis is not yet extinct, as was believed up to now, and that colonies do still exist, either in Asia Minor or in southwestern Arabia. All records from Arabia are presented and the status of the eastern Bald Ibis is discussed.

Notes: Conclusion As forF, further improvements can be hardly expected; that applies to both technique of measurement and reduction routine. The effort of reduction according to additional stations is considerable. On principle, the effort can be cut down, if future surveys will be conducted during years of the quiet sun, i. e., minimum particle radiation, again — as was the case in 1965.0 and 1935.0. Then, obviously, in most cases a correction derived from the deviations of hourly means against daily means (Voppel, Wienert [1974]) of the reference observatories (WNG and FUR) may be sufficient, provided that the measurements are carried out not between the early morning and the late afternoon. At noon, both longitude and latitude influences become maximum and most complicated, as was revealed by a statistic investigation (Voppel, Wienert [1974]) and also by an isolated case (Schulz, Beblo [1984]). Only measurements carried out during disturbed intervals and during strong Sq variations are to be reduced according to the nearest of a few additional high-quality variation stations. What is valid for the reduction ofF, that is valid for the other components, because theF variations were calculated fromH andZ variations. From this follows that the residuals ofD and particularly ofI to a great extent are due to uncertainties of measurement. Therefore, in the future, efforts must be focused upon a reliable reproduction of the standards of these components at secular points. However, as has been emphasized in the beginning, only the next survey can clarify as to what extent the probe theodolite contributes to the uncertainty of measurement.

Notes: This paper critically examines the scope and limitations of state-of-the-art chromatographic techniques (GPC, GC, HPLC) for separating and analyzing the composition, molecular weight, and molecular weight distribution of acrylate and styrene based polyether macromonomers. Of the three chromatrographic techniques investigated, HPLC is found to be the most useful technique for macromonomer analysis, being applicable over a wide molecular weight range and having favorable selectivities towards the many macromonomer components. Macromonomer purity, n-mer distribution, and molecular weight can be derived from a single chromatographic run. In addition, conformational information can be obtained.

Description / Table of Contents: Assuming inelastic scattering of quasi-free charge carriers of solids by adsorbed gas molecules, a simple model for heterogeneous catalytic reactions is developed which allows to describe mathematically the increase of catalytic activation energy on increasing deviation of the energy of the impact partners from the resonance condition of energy transfer. The model is proved for simple decomposition reactions.
