Notes: Abstract Water movement is probably the most important factor influencing life in the interstices of sandy beaches. In order to better understand this ecosystem, e.g. the distribution and migration of interstitial fauna and overall energy transfer, measurements of water flow through high energy beaches were made on the Atlantic coast of the USA. Special hot thermistor-probes and associated electronic circuits were built, capable of measuring water-flow velocity down to less than 10 μm/sec. These were buried in the sand at various depths and locations in the intertidal zone and the flow velocity recorded continuously for one or more tidal cycles. In addition, an orientation sensor was constructed and used together with the flow probe so that a picture of the flow patterns in the intertidal zone of a beach and their changes during a tidal pattern could be developed and defined quantitatively.

Notes: Abstract Sandy subtidal sediments are part of the earth's largest filter system. Water flow through bottom sediments is driven by wave action on the sea surface. The mechanisms involved are described, including a theoretical deduction and field measurements. As an example, the total water exchange through part of the West Atlantic shelf is computed and the influence of the phenomenon is discussed from a biological point of view and with regard to its importance for the world's oceans.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 1.
Notes: Abstract The importance of water movement as an ecological factor in littoral areas and open oceans is frequently badly underestimated. Water movement may exert biological effects comparable to those of light and temperature. Without water movement, all marine life would cease to exist. In this papar water movement is taken to embrace all motions which may occur in oceanic and coastal waters, e.g. currents, tides, horizontal and vertical water exchanges. The primary driving forces creating oceanic water movements are: gravity, earth rotation, atmospheric dynamics, and sun radiation. Until recently, water movements have largely, or exclusively, been studied by physical oceanographers; biological aspects of water movements have only lately begun to attract the attention of biologists. The results obtained so far make it quite clear that approaches and terminology employed by physical oceanographers require modification in order to meet the needs of marine biologists. The biological consequences of water movements are particularly complex, since moving water serves as transportation medium for other environmental factors such as temperature, salinity, food, etc. At the same time, some of these factors affect, in turn, speed and direction of the moving water. In addition, speed and intensity of water movements may be differentiated due to the variety of sources which cause or modify them. Various examples are presented to illustrate the complexity of water movement and its effects on biological systems. The intensity values of water movement may vary over an extremely wide range (13 degrees of magnitude).

Notes: Abstract A complex ecosystem of anaerobic and microaerobic properties underlies the oxidized surface layer of all marine sandy bottoms, with the exception of narrow “high-energy windows”. Investigations made on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, by T. Fenchel in Danish waters, and by R. Riedl and collaborators mainly in US (North Carolinian) waters; involve quantitative studies of plants, ciliates and invertebrates, measurements of chemical and physical parameters, systematics, physiological and model experiments.

Notes: The evolution and structure of graphene layers on 4H-SiC(0001) and the correspondinginterface are investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and low energy electron diffraction(LEED). The surface is characterized by the so-called (6p3£6p3)R30± reconstruction, whosestructural properties are still unclear but at the same time are crucial for the controlled growth ofhomogeneous high-quality large-terrace graphene surfaces. We analyse the properties of three phasesin this reconstruction with periodicities (6p3£6p3)R30±, (6£6) and (5£5). Their LEED intensitiesstrongly depend on the surface preparation procedure applied. The graphitization process imprintsdistinct features in the STM images as well as in the LEED spectra. An easy and practicable determinationof the number of graphene layers is outlined by means of LEED intensities

Notes: The discussion on career plateaus is marked by a diversity of operationalizations. This paper focuses on the independence of three dimensions of career plateaus and the impact they have on outcome measures in three areas: performance, work satisfaction and commitment. Data from 165 university staff and 77 school teachers confirmed the independence of the concepts of career plateaus. Contrary to the general assumption that an extended period working at the same position has detrimental effects, outcome variables were not connected to position immobility. Results for most of the outcome measures showed the work-content dimension to account for significantly more variance than the subjective structural dimension. Advances in work content can even moderate negative effects emanating from low expectations of hierarchical promotion. Specifically, the negative effects were most pronounced where the two subjective dimensions of career plateau coincided. These have implications for individual and organizational career management processes.
