Notes: Summary Ruggedness testing is performed on a gas chromatographic method for the quantitative determination of residual solvents in steroids. Eight experimental variables or factors which were expected to influence the quantitative results were selected. These factors were divided into two independent groups, i.e. four factors related to the injection process and four factors related to separation and detection. In order to determine interaction between factors and quadratic effects, a central composite design was selected for the set-up of the experiments. Because in the method an internal standard is used, relative peak area was used as response. A deviation of up to 2.5% per factor for the quantitative results was regarded as acceptable. Other responses studied are related to the system suitability. Observed main, quadratic and interaction effects were translated into rugged intervals of the experimental variables by graphical presentation. It was found that besides main effects significant interaction effects were present, for example between the temperature of the injector and the split-flow. Interaction effects can easily result in the reduction of the rugged intervals by a factor of 2. The calculated rugged intervals were compared with the precision of the instrument or factor settings in order to estimate the ruggedness of the factors. Eventually, the maximum effect of the variation in the instrument settings on the quantitative results regarding the precision of the factor settings was found to be only 2.2%. Overall, the method proved to be rugged for most factors, except for the split-flow of the injector for which the method was only rugged to a limited extent.

Notes: Summary TheSalmonella typhimurium histidine reversion test of Ames et al. was used to demonstrate that pheomelanin, the red-brown polymeric pigment produced in human skin and hair, becomes mutagenic after exposure to long wave-length UV-light; a finding consistent with the UV-induced somatic mutation hypothesis for the origin of freckles and the high susceptibility of redheads and blonds to sunlight-induced skin cancers.

Notes: Abstract. This paper describes the calculation of the semileptonic Kl3 decay form factors at order p6 of chiral perturbation theory, which is the next-to-leading order correction to the well-known p4 result achieved by Gasser and Leutwyler. At order p6 the chiral expansion contains one- and two-loop diagrams which are discussed in detail. The irreducible two-loop graphs of the sunset topology are calculated numerically. In addition, the chiral Lagrangian ${\cal L}^{(6)}$ produces direct couplings with the W bosons. Due to these unknown couplings, one can always add linear terms in q2 to the predictions of the form factor f - (q 2 ). For the form factor f + (q 2 ), this ambiguity involves even quadratic terms. Making use of the fact that the pion electromagnetic form factor involves the same q4 counterterm, the q4 ambiguity can be resolved. Apart from the possibility of adding an arbitrary linear term in q2 our calculation shows that chiral perturbation theory converges very well in this application, as the ${\cal O}(p^{6})$ corrections are small. Comparing the predictions of chiral perturbation theory with the recent CPLEAR data, it is seen that the experimental form factor f + (q 2 ) is well described by a linear fit, but that the slope $ \lambda _{+}$ is smaller by about 2 standard deviations than the ${\cal O} (p^{4})$ prediction. The unavoidable q2 counterterm of the ${\cal O}(p^{6})$ corrections allows one to bring the predictions of chiral perturbation theory into perfect agreement with experiment.

Notes: Abstract With a tunable laser we have selectively excited rovibrational levels in then=3 triplet gerade states of H2. These levels fluoresce to theb 3Σ u + state followed by dissociation. The released kinetic energy spectra of the fragments are measured with translational spectroscopy. These spectra reflect the structure of the product of the excited state vibrational wavefunction and the transition dipole moment. Applying a simple transformation, this product can be recovered as a function of internuclear distance. From the comparison between the experimental result and wavefunctions, calculated in diabatic potentials, we have extracted theR dependence of the transition dipole moments for theg 3Σ g + →b 3Σ u + andi 3∏ g →b 3Σ u + transitions. The spectra suggest that a diabatic description is more realistic for theg 3Σ g + levels than an adiabatic.

Notes: Summary  An attempt has been made to relate a large-scale airflow classification to the local weather at two stations in Estonia. To describe the features of the general circulation over Europe, the large-scale circulation patterns (Grosswetterlagen) of the German Weather Service have been chosen. Daily precipitation and temperature deviations from the monthly mean in Pärnu and Tartu for 1961–1993 have been used. It can be said that the weather in Estonia shows a good relationship with the general circulation types (Zirkulationsformen) that are defined by means of the Grosswetterlagen. Zonal circulation brings to Estonia wet weather that in winter is warmer than average and in summer cooler than average. Mixed circulation is associated with warmer winters and average summers. Meridional circulation brings cold winters and variable weather in summer. To explain the large dispersion of values of meteorological elements within any one circulation type, a more detailed analysis of the relationships between circulation patterns and meteorological situation in Estonia is needed.

Notes: In the approach described in this paper, the layer of adsorbent is divided into n sublayers. The radiation density in each sublayer is given by the sum of the transmittance and the reflectance of the adjacent sublayers. Absorption of light by the layer or the substance will diminish this radiation density. Depending upon the factors of reflectance and transmittance some light will pass to the adjacent sublayers. Two polynomials are derived from this readily understood formulation to calculate the reflectance or the transmittance of a layer of finite thickness. The algorithms given describe the reflectance and transmittance encountered in practical measurements with large amounts of substance per spot, as well as with small amounts. There are no restrictions with respect to nonideal scattering or reflection by the adsorbent layer support.
