    Notes: The Seiberg–Witten equations, when dimensionally reduced to R2, naturally yield the Liouville equation, whose solutions are parametrized by an arbitrary analytic function g(z). The magnetic flux Φ is the integral of a singular Kaehler form involving g(z); for an appropriate choice of g(z), N coaxial or separated vortex configurations with Φ=2πN/e are obtained when the integral is regularized. The regularized connection in the R1 case coincides with the kink solution of cursive-phi4 theory. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The action of pressure-radiation (or Bjerknes) forces on gas bubbles is well understood. This paper studies the analogous phenomenon for vapor bubbles, about which much less is known. A possible practical application is the removal of boiling bubbles from the neighborhood of a heated surface in the case of a downward facing surface or in the absence of gravity. For this reason, the case of a bubble near a plane rigid surface is considered in detail. It is shown that, when the acoustic wave fronts are parallel to the surface, the bubble remains trapped due to secondary Bjerknes force caused by an "image bubble." When the wave fronts are perpendicular to the surface, on the other hand, the bubble can be made to slide laterally. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In this paper we study several problems involving two dimensional and axisymmetric jets issuing in a medium with negligible dynamical effects: (1) a two-dimensional jet entirely bounded by free surfaces, (2) a two-dimensional jet bounded by a free surface and a wall, (3) an axisymmetric jet and (4) a hollow annular jet in a tube. The theoretical study is based on a new technique in which, on the basis of a boundary layer approximation, the velocity components are expanded into a suitable set of eigenfunctions. The deformation of the jet, that is assumed to be a slow function of the distance from the jet exit, is handled by a scaled coordinate system. For the case of the axisymmetric jet, which is the only one previously considered in the literature, this technique is found to be in excellent agreement with previously published, much more computationally demanding results. An experiment involving a vertical water jet has been carried out to further verify the accuracy of the current technique. In particular the behavior very near the exit was found to be in excellent agreement with the experiment at high Reynolds numbers. The fact that the jet relaxation time is much shorter than the time obtained from dimensional arguments is explained with the aid of the semi-analytical structure of the method. In the case of the annular wall jets, the length of the inner gaseous region is found to be finite depending on the Froude number. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: It was shown in recent work that the crests of surface disturbances on a falling jet are a powerful agent for air entrainment at the free surface of a liquid pool. The paper explores the opposite case in which the jet is disturbed so as to form an axisymmetric trough, rather than a crest. It is found that no air is entrained in this case. The paper concludes with some considerations on the validity of a recently proposed model for air entrainment. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The species saturation hypothesis in ground-dwelling ant communities was tested, the relationship between local and regional species richness was studied and the possible processes involved in this relationship were evaluated in the present paper. To describe the relationship between local and regional species richness, the ground-dwelling ant fauna of 10 forest remnants was sampled, using 10 1 m2 quadrats in each remnant. The ants were extracted from the litter by using Winkler sacs. Using regression analyses, an asymptotic pattern between local and regional species richness was detected. This saturated pattern may be related to three processes: (i) high interspecific competition; (ii) habitat species specialization; or (iii) stochastic equilibrium. It is concluded that non-interactive processes, such as stochastic equilibrium and habitat specialization may act as factors regulating species richness in this community. The predominance of locally restricted species, in all sampled remnants, seems to indicate the occurrence of a high degree of habitat specialization by the ant species. This result is evidence for the hypothesis that community saturation has been generated by non-interactive processes. Although ants are frequently described as highly interactive, it is possible that interspecific competition is not important in the structuring of ground-dwelling ant communities.

    Notes: Impulsive vibration generated by localized gear damage can be used as an indicator for damage detection. Local damage induces an abrupt increase of the amplitude and phase lag of the impulsive vibration signal measured on the gearbox. Relatively large damage like “tip breakage” can be easily detected by the amplitude map of CWT (continuous wavelet transform) for the impulsive vibration signal measured on the gearbox. However, minor damage like “initial pitting” cannot be detected with the amplitude map. To overcome this problem, in this paper we take into account the phase map for a damage signal. The zoomed phase map of CWT is successfully applied to the detection of minor gearbox damage

    Notes: In an automotive engine, faults induce impulsive vibrations and thereby degrade engine performance, making it important for an automotive engineer to detect and analyze impulsive vibration signals for fault diagnosis. However, detecting and identifying impulsive signals is often difficult because of interfering signals such as those due to engine firing, harmonics of crankshaft speed and broadband noise components. These interferences hinder early fault detection. To overcome this difficulty we present a two-stage ALEF (Adaptive Line Enhancer Filter) that is capable of enhancing impulsive signals embedded in background noise. This method is used to pre-process signals prior to time-frequency analysis via higher order methods such as the combined higher order time-frequency
