    Notes: In this theoretical analysis of heat transfer in film condensation the total vapor-side resistance to heat transfer is obtained by adding the resistance to conduction through the condensate film to the resistance due to the condensation process at the vapor-liquid interface.The analysis shows that under ordinary conditions conduction in the condensate film is controlling, provided the condensation coefficient is greater than about 0.10. However, under conditions of low total pressure, low heat flux, or low condensation coefficient, the resistances of both processes must be considered.Experiments carried out on the condensation of methanol are in good agreement with the theory. Furthermore, values of the condensation coefficient for methanol are reported which show that small quantities of air will greatly reduce its magnitude. This is offered as an explantion of the commonly observed phenomenon of reduction of heat transfer rates when noncondensable gases enter a system.

    Notes: Within the past several years considerable interest has developed in the practice of retrofitting plasticating extruders with gear pumps. The primary motivation for this is to reduce surges and fluctuations in the extrusion rate, thereby improving product quality and reducing waste. It is shown that the effectiveness of a gear pump for this purpose is directly related to its volumetric efficiency, which depends upon the pump dimensions, the flow behavior of the polymer, and the operating variables of temperature, pressure differential, and pump speed. Experimental data on three thermoplastic materials using a pump having gear wheels of 36 mm diameter for both leakage and power are reported. These data have been correlated with semi-empirical equations.

    Notes: Based on the simplified, flat-plate, isothermal, Newtonian flow model of the screw pump, an expression for pressure as a function of time at a fixed point on the extruder barrel has been derived. This expression predicts a periodic saw tooth pressure cycle under most flow conditions. It also establishes the flow conditions under which an inversion of the saw tooth cycle will occur. Pressure transducer data, in conjunction with extrusion rate data, can be used to calculate the average fluid viscosity in a region near the transducer.

    Notes: A numerical method for analyzing the uniformity of flow from sheeting dies is presented. The method assumes that the flow is isothermal and that the material is a power law fluid. A uniformity index is defined and methods are presented which enable die dimensions to be established which will result in a specified uniformity at particular flow rates and pressure drops. The analysis shows that the flow index “n” of the power law is the key parameter determining the uniformity of flow from a sheeting die.

    Notes: An analysis of fluid transport in a polymer processor consisting of a hollow vertical cylinder with rotating blades is presented. The action of the rotating blades causes a thin film to be deposited on the inner surface of the processor and a bow wave to form in front of the blade. Fluid transport through the processor depends upon flow within the bow wave. Three types of flows are identified as contributing to the fluid transport: flow under the influence of a pressure gradient, flow due to gravitational force, and drag flow due to the action of the rotating blades. Equations describing these flows are derived as well as an equation for the bow wave profile. Experimental data in good agreement with the theoretical development are presented.

    Notes: The mechanics of energy conversion in an extruder is extremely complex. Generally speaking, the extrusion process utilizes two sources of energy: (1) mechanical energy which is imparted to the polymer by the rotational motion of the screw, and (2) thermal energy (heat) which flows between the polymer and surfaces of the barrel by conduction and convection.Modern extrusion processes are relatively wasteful of energy because, operating at high speeds, they often dissipate an excess of mechanical energy as heat that has to be transferred (by barrel cooling) from the polymer and discharged into the surroundings as waste energy.Until recently, little attention was paid to this wasted energy. Energy was relatively cheap and the process economics favored was high speed operation despite its associated energy wastage. With the recent introduction of gear pumps for extruders, low pressure extruder operation becomes a possibility. It appears that this type of operation may result in a significant improvement in energy efficiency.This paper attempts to analyze the energy economy of extrusion processes and to understand where and how energy savings can result from the use of gear pumps. It shows that if substantial energy savings are to result from the use of gear pumps, these savings will come about not because of increased pumping efficiencies, but because low pressure operation has made a fundamental change in the energy conversion processes occurring in the screw.

    Notes: Solid bed transport has an important effect on the over all performance of a plasticating extruder. The coefficient of friction and density are the properties of the solid bed that govern its transport in the feed section of the screw. These properties have been measured, as a function of temperature and pressure, for eight common thermoplastic materials in an apparatus that simulates solid bed motion and compaction in a plasticating extruder and the results have been interpreted phenomenologically.
