    Notes: Conclusions A study was made of the phase formation in heat-treated alumina fibers without additives and with the addition of SiO2, MgO, and Cr2O3. It is established that the addition of these oxides and their combinations retards the conversion of the transition forms of Al2O3 which are unfavorable for the strength properties of alumina fibers, into the stable α-form. The causes of the phenomenon observed are connected with the change in the concentration of the point defects of the structure governing the stated inversions with the addition of impurity oxides to the fibers made of Al2O3.

    Notes: Conclusions An investigation of the composition and crystallization of pigmental and metallurgical chromic oxide showed that the crystal size of the pigmental chromic oxide increases during roasting. In a study of the influence of the kiln atmosphere on the sintering process of chromic oxide it was established that the presence of an absorber of oxygen from the kiln atmosphere promotes sintering in open-flame and other industrial type kilns. An analysis was carried out of the grinding kinetics of chromic oxide as a factor in the sintering of specimens produced from the ground material.

    Notes: Conclusions The introduction of titanium into the lattice of cristobalite gives rise to those changes in the temperature characteristics of polymorphic conversions of cristobalite which lead to an increase in the spalling resistance of the silica brick. The solubility of TiO2 in cristobalite is low, so that to obtain the necessary concentration of solid solution it is necessary to introduce titania in excessive quantity (about 15%). The total content of additives can be greatly reduced by introducing titania in the composition of certain mixtures for example TiO2+GeO2 and TiO2+Al2O3.

    Notes: Conclusions Orthophosphoric acid reacts with kaolinite clay already at room temperature. The reaction results in the dissociation of some kaolinite and the formation of acid aluminophosphates, its rate is at maximum during the first 4–10 days of the storage of the composition of clay with the acid, and it ceases when the composition is stored for longer periods. The triderivative of aluminophosphate begins to form only on heating above 100°C. At a temperature of 400°C and higher it forms more rapidly while the proportion of mono- and diderivatives of aluminophosphates diminishes. The fact that in compositions of kaolinite clay with orthophosphoric acid in storage only water-soluble acid aluminophosphates are formed and triderivative of aluminophosphate is absent makes it possible to produce clay-containing aluminosilicate compositions containing orthophosphoric acid at refractory plants in ready-for-use form.

    Notes: Conclusions A method was developed for determining the amount of phases in specimens containing crystalline constituents of silica. The method is based on measuring the relationship between the x-ray diffraction lines and the concentration of the phases using an independent, external standard. The average error in the measurement of the amount of crystalline phases is ∼2–3% with a sensitivity of ∿0.5% for quartz and 1–2% for cristobalite and tridymite. Measuring the concentration of each phase with two independent lines tends to increase the accuracy of the analysis, which enables us to control the determination and increase its accuracy.

    Notes: Conclusions An investigation was carried out of the influence of certain additives on the sintering of chromic oxide. In an air medium, chromic oxide does not sinter at all without an additive. It achieves slight sintering with added TiO2 and a higher degree of sintering when aluminosilicates are added. The effect of TiO2 on the sintering process is significantly more marked in a reducing medium. It was established that a relation exists between the degree of sintering and the change in the lattice parameters of the Cr2O3 caused by the addition of TiO2, and between the degree of sintering of aluminosillicate-containing chromic oxide and the percent glass-forming silica in the additive. Chromic oxide specimens were produced to a porosity of about 15%.

    Notes: Conclusions The authors have investigated solid-phase synthesis of mullite and developed a procedure for quantitative x-ray analysis of mullite in two-phase mixtures of mullite and corundum. They have shown the advantage of joint vibrogrinding of the initial components as opposed to separate grinding during synthesis and sintering of mullite from quartz sand and commercial alumina. The onset of mullitization was noted at 1200°C, and complete mullitization at 1750°C (residence 16 h).

Milling in a planetary mill raises the level of crystal lattice microdistortions in chromium oxide powder, reduces the particle size of the powder, and breaks up its mosaic blocks. The kinetics of the variation of the particle and block sizes is characterized by saturation. 2. Fine crystal structure defects are annealed out in the temperature range 900–1100°C. Marked densification of chromium oxide during calcining in a reducing atmosphere begins at 1300°C. 3. Milling as a means of activation substantially improves the sintering of Cr2O3 powders at temperatures of 1500–1600°C. For activated chromium oxide powders a correlation is found between the degree of sintering and the level of structural defectiveness.
