Notes: Abstract Concrete C*-algebras, interpreted physically as algebras of observables, are defined for quantum mechanics and local quantum field theory. Aquantum mechanical system is characterized formally by a continuous unitary representation up to a factorU g of a symmetry group $$\mathfrak{G}$$ in Hilbert space ℌ and a von Neumann algebra ℜ on ℌ invariant with respect toU g . The set $$\mathfrak{A}$$ of all operatorsX∈ℜ such thatU g X U g −1 , as a function ofg∈ $$\mathfrak{G}$$ , is continuous with respect to the uniform operator topology, is aC*-algebra called thealgebra of observables. The algebra ℜ is shown to be the weak (or strong) closure of $$\mathfrak{A}$$ . Infield theory, a unitary representation up to a factorU(a, Λ) of the proper inhomogeneous Lorentz group $$\mathfrak{G}$$ and local von Neumann algebras ℜC for finite open space-time regionsC are assumed, with the usual transformation properties of $$\mathfrak{G}$$ underU(a, Λ). The collection of allX∈ℜC giving uniformly continuous functionsU (a, Λ)X U −1 (a, Λ) on $$\mathfrak{G}$$ is then a localC*-algebra $$\mathfrak{A}_C $$ , called thealgebra of local observables. The algebra $$\mathfrak{A}_C $$ is again weakly (or strongly) dense in ℜ c . The norm-closed union $$\mathfrak{A}$$ of the $$\mathfrak{A}_C $$ for allC is calledalgebra of quasilocal observables (or quasilocal algebra). In either case, the group $$\mathfrak{G}$$ is represented by automorphisms V g resp. V(a, Λ) — with V g X=U g X U g −1 — of theC*-algebra $$\mathfrak{A}$$ , and this is astrongly continuous representation of $$\mathfrak{G}$$ on the Banach space $$\mathfrak{A}$$ . Conditions for V (a, Λ) can then be formulated which correspond to the usualspectrum condition forU (a, Λ) in field theory.

Notes: Abstract A class of general quantum field theories without explicit use of fieldsA(x) is defined by a set of postulates for the von Neumann algebras ℜ C of local observables. The vacuum state is cyclic with respect to any ℜ C , and the Borchers tube theorem is shown to hold. Some ℜ C are factors and not of finite type. A property of local observables called strict locality is formulated and expressed by means of a necessary and sufficient condition for the algebras ℜ C . It is proved for finite regions.

Notes: Abstract From translational invariance we have essentially two possibilities for energymomentum-objects of gravitation: the pseudotensor found byEinstein and an object similar to that ofMøller. We must prefer the latter not only because its more reasonable properties, but also from a more axiomatic point of view. A difference of our work from that ofMøller and another (“purely canonical”) formulation of the conservation theorem are pointed out. .

Notes: Tissue-engineered implants require appropriate biomaterials to serve the required physical function of the tissue being repaired or replaced while facilitating remodeling of the implant. We report on the development of implantable fabrics manufactured from continuous collagen threads. The collagen threads are formed by extrusion of native, acid-extracted bovine colagen into a buffered solution of polyethylene glycol, followed by rinsing and air drying. The high manufacturing rate of such threads permits the production of colagen fabrics of various configurations. The fiber diameter can be controlled, and threads with dry diameters as low as 25 μm have been produced. Braids and bundles of collagen threads implanted as a replacement of the anterior cruciate ligament in a dog model were completely remodeled into host tissue by 12 weeks. Knitted collagen fabrics implanted in a rat abdominal repair model prevented herniation, and connective tissue ingrowth was observed within the fabric by 12 weeks.

Notes: Abstract Populations of theDaphnia hyalina-galeata complex from Central, North and South Europe have been compared morphologically. The main purpose of this investigation is delimitation of the critical speciesDaphnia galeata, based on a thorough examination of the original materials from G. O. Sars' collection, and taking into account hitherto overlooked or insufficiently appreciated characters. According to their morphology and ecology,Daphnia hyalina, Daphnia galeata andDaphnia cucullata have to be treated taxonomically as separate species. In view of the short and high antennula mound and other morphological characteristics,Daphnia gracilis Hellich andDaphnia hyalina lacustris sensu Lilljeborg belong to the speciesDaphnia galeata. In the common range ofDaphnia galeata andDaphnia cacullata there occurs quite frequently an intermediary form, which according to genetic evidence is a hybrid of these two species. Although apparently this hybrid form is stabilized genetically to a large extent and is capable of identical reproduction, it should not be considered as a species in the usual sense. The present work intends to put the notoriously confused systematics of theDaphnia hyalina-galeata complex on a firm basis. It concludes with a key, which should enable also non-specialists to identify uniquely the three species and the hybrid form in question.
