Notes: Summary A simple statistical model is constructed, describing the transition from disorder to order in a population of mutually catalytic molecules undergoing random mutations. The consequences of the model are calculated, and its possible relevance to the problem of the origin of life is discussed. The main conclusion of the analysis is that the model allows populations of several thousand molecular units to make the transition from disorder to order with reasonable probability.

Notes: [Auszug] A neutron star volcano will differ in essential respects from a terrestrial volcano. The material will expand in volume by an enormous factor as it rises to the surface, and it will emerge like a hypersonic jet from a rocket nozzle rather than like a lava-flow. Most of the material will fall back ...

Notes: [Auszug] James Bradley laid the foundations of modern science in his aunt's attic. His impressively precise astronomical measurements gave birth to experimental physics as we know it. The first in our series of millennium ...

Notes: Abstract An infinite one-dimensional Ising ferromagnetM with long-range interactions is constructed and proved to have the following properties. (1)M has an order-disorder phase transition at a finite temperature. (2) Any Ising ferromagnet of the same structure asM, but with interactions tending to zero with distance more rapidly than those ofM, cannot have a phase-transition. (3) The long-range-order parameter (thermal average of the spin-spin correlation at infinite distance) jumps discontinuously from zero in the disordered phase to a finite value in the ordered phase. All three properties have been conjectured by Anderson and Thouless to hold for a particular Ising ferromagnet which is relevant to the theory of the Kondo effect. AlthoughM is not identical to Anderson's model, the results proved forM support the validity of the physical arguments of Anderson and Thouless.

Notes: Abstract Existence of a phase-transition is proved for an infinite linear chain of spins μ j =±1, with an interaction energy $$H = - \sum J(i - j)\mu _i \mu _j ,$$ whereJ(n) is positive and monotone decreasing, and the sums ΣJ(n) and Σ (log logn) [n 3 J(n)]−1 both converge. In particular, as conjectured byKac andThompson, a transition exists forJ(n)=n −α when 1 〈 α 〈 2. A possible extension of these results to Heisenberg ferromagnets is discussed.

Notes: Abstract We prove that the variance of the error function in the shifted circle problem, as a function of the shift, is a continuous function which has a sharp local maximum with infinite derivatives at every rational point on a plane.
