    Notes: The elution volume of polystyrene or of poly(ethylene glycol) of various molecular weights was measured in both tetrahydrofuran and benzene at 40 or 60°C by means of gel permeation chromatography utilizing columns packed with crosslinked polystyrene gel or porous glass. When the polystyrene gel was used as the column packing, a relationship between log [η]M and the peak elution volume for polystyrene agreed with that for poly(ethylene glycol). Using columns packed with glass, however, the elution volume of polystyrene was smaller than that of poly(ethylene glycol) at the same log [η]M. The results are considered to be attributable to the adsorption of poly(ethylene glycol) onto the glass. The effect of the adsorption on the elution volume was evaluated by assuming a universal calibration for columns containing porous glass; the deviation of the elution volume from the universal calibration curve increased with increase in molecular weight. At lower temperatures, even polystyrene was adsorbed onto the glass. Therefore, to reduce the adsorption of polymers on glass, it is necessary to increase the temperature or use surface treatment when porous glass is used as a GPC column packing.

    Notes: The free radicals trapped in oriented nylon 6 filaments after γ-irradiation under vacuum at room temperature were studied by ESR spectroscopy. The ESR spectrum measured after irradiation gradually changed to a broad singlet spectrum with decrease in the intensity. The ESR spectrum consisted of radicals with different orientation effects with respect to the outer magnetic field, and saturation effects in reference to microwave power. The simulation of the ESR spectrum from a Gaussian function gave a better fit to the observed spectrum than the calculation from a Lorentzian function. From the resolution of the spectrum from a Gaussian function, the observed spectrum is generated from three kinds of radicals: The relative radical concentration for the first, second, and third radical is about 75%, 6%, and 19% of the total radical concentration, respectively. With regard to the stability of the radicals, the third radical shows a comparatively long lifetime. The first and second radicals show almost identical lifetime, and their concentrations reduce to about 40% of the initial value during the 2 days at room temperature.

    Notes: When a cation exchange membrane having carboxyl groups, made of poly(isobutylene-alternative co-maleic anhydride) and poly(vinyl alcohol), was set in a diaphragm type cell, in which one side of the solution was adjusted to be acidic and the other side alkaline, metal ions were actively transported from the alkaline side to the acidic side across the membrane against the concentration gradient of metal ions between both sides. The driving force of the transport of metal ions was the difference in H+ ion concentration between both sides. It was presumed that the active transport was carried out chemically and physically. In the selective transport of metal ions, the selectivity was dependent on both the hydrated ionic radius for the metal ions and the affinity between the carrier fixed to the membrane, the carboxyl group, and the metal ions.

    Notes: Cells from Escherichia coli (IAM 12119) were immobilized with the polyion complex of trimethylammonium glycol chitosan iodide (TGCI) and potassium poly(vinyl alcohol) sulfate (KPVS). The immobilization was carried out at pH 8 by mixing TGCI with the cell suspension, followed by addition of KPVS. The immobilized cells were characterized by investigating the glucose oxidizing activity. The results obtained indicated that the glucose consumption with immobilized cells is due not only to the cells released from the complex support but also to the entrapped cells which are grown in the complex; therefore, the cells entrapped in the complex have the glucose oxidizing activity. The physicochemical studies on the immobilization mechanism showed that cells are immobilized via two stages: the aggregation of cells with TGCI and the entrapment of the aggregates in the TGCI-KPVS complex. In the aggregation process, a part of TGCI which is added to cell suspension adsorbs on the cells and the other remains in the suspension. In the entrapment process, the remainder forms the polyion complex with KPVS added and the aggregated cells are coprecipitated with the complex.

    Notes: Decomposition of t-butylhydroperoxide was retarded by triazine thiols and their zinc salts, but accelerated by the copper salts of triazine thiols as well as sulfur compounds such as dithiocarbamates and mercaptobenzothiazolates. Triazine thiols and their zine salts are effective antioxidants for polyethylene crosslinked with peroxide and containing copper, and for protecting epichlorohydrin vulcanizates against attack by “sour” or hydroperoxide-containing gasoline.

    Notes: Styrene was grafted onto cellulose acetate p-nitrobenzoate (CANB) by chain transfer reaction of growing polymer radicals to the pendant nitro groups of CANB. A copolymer with a branch for every 17.2 nitro groups was obtained. This result indicates that the pendant aromatic nitro group is more effective in obtaining a graft copolymer by radical mechanism than pendant double bond on the trunk polymer previously reported, where graft copolymers with a branch for several hundred of double bonds are produced.

    Notes: Individual action and synergistic effect in the combination of 6-anilino-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-dithiol (AF), zinc stearate, and barium stearate on the color stabilization of PVC were investigated. In this system, AF selectively reacts with allylic chlorine atoms in PVC. Consequently, unstable allylic chlorine units were converted to thermally stable allylic structures, thus retarding the development of polyene sequences. Zinc stearate accelerated the reaction of AF with allylic chlorine atoms in PVC, forming the zinc salts of AF (AFZnSt, St=C1-H35COO—) by reacting with AF. Barium stearate reacted with ZnCl2 which is formed in the above reaction to give St2Zn and BaCl2. Consequently, barium stearate led to the selective reaction of AF with allylic chlorine atoms in PVC and the remarkable retarding effect of discoloration of PVC.
