Beschreibung: Raman scattering is most commonly associated with a change in vibrational state within individual molecules, the corresponding frequency shift in the scattered light affording a key way of identifying material structures. In theories where both matter and light are treated quantum mechanically, the fundamental scattering process is represented as the concurrent annihilation of a photon from one radiation mode and creation of another in a different mode. Developing this quantum electrodynamical formulation, the focus of the present work is on the spectroscopic consequences of electrodynamic coupling between neighboring molecules or other kinds of optical center. To encompass these nanoscale interactions, through which the molecular states evolve under the dual influence of the input light and local fields, this work identifies and determines two major mechanisms for each of which different selection rules apply. The constituent optical centers are considered to be chemically different and held in a fixed orientation with respect to each other, either as two components of a larger molecule or a molecular assembly that can undergo free rotation in a fluid medium or as parts of a larger, solid material. The two centers are considered to be separated beyond wavefunction overlap but close enough together to fall within an optical near-field limit, which leads to high inverse power dependences on their local separation. In this investigation, individual centers undergo a Stokes transition, whilst each neighbor of a different species remains in its original electronic and vibrational state. Analogous principles are applicable for the anti-Stokes case. The analysis concludes by considering the experimental consequences of applying this spectroscopic interpretation to fluid media; explicitly, the selection rules and the impact of pressure on the radiant intensity of this process.

Beschreibung: We report simulations and experiments that demonstrate an increase in spatial resolution of the NIF core diagnostic x-ray streak cameras by at least a factor of two, especially off axis. A design was achieved by using a corrector electron optic to flatten the field curvature at the detector plane and corroborated by measurement. In addition, particle in cell simulations were performed to identify the regions in the streak camera that contribute the most to space charge blurring. These simulations provide a tool for convolving synthetic pre-shot spectra with the instrument function so signal levels can be set to maximize dynamic range for the relevant part of the streak record.

Beschreibung: We create streaming ultracold neutral plasmas by tailoring the photoionizing laser beam that creates the plasma. By varying the electron temperature, we control the relative velocity of the streaming populations, and, in conjunction with variation of the plasma density, this controls the ion collisionality of the colliding streams. Laser-induced fluorescence is used to map the spatially resolved density and velocity distribution function for the ions. We identify the lack of local thermal equilibrium and distinct populations of interpenetrating, counter-streaming ions as signatures of kinetic behavior. Experimental data are compared with results from a one-dimensional, two-fluid numerical simulation.

Beschreibung: The DIlation X-ray Imager (DIXI) is a new, high-speed x-ray framing camera at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) sensitive to x-rays in the range of ≈2–17 keV. DIXI uses the pulse-dilation technique to achieve a temporal resolution of less than 10 ps, a ≈10× improvement over conventional framing cameras currently employed on the NIF (≈100 ps resolution), and otherwise only attainable with 1D streaked imaging. The pulse-dilation technique utilizes a voltage ramp to impart a velocity gradient on the signal-bearing electrons. The temporal response, spatial resolution, and x-ray sensitivity of DIXI are characterized with a short x-ray impulse generated using the COMET laser facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. At the NIF a pinhole array at 10 cm from target chamber center (tcc) projects images onto the photocathode situated outside the NIF chamber wall with a magnification of ≈64×. DIXI will provide important capabilities for warm-dense-matter physics, high-energy-density science, and inertial confinement fusion, adding important capabilities to temporally resolve hot-spot formation, x-ray emission, fuel motion, and mix levels in the hot-spot at neutron yields of up to 10 17 . We present characterization data as well as first results on electron-transport phenomena in buried-layer foil experiments.

Notizen: We report the growth of high-quality As-based ternary and quaternary alloys lattice matched to InP using a valved arsenic source that can post-heat the As beam after evaporation. We find that the optimum group-V-to-group-III beam-equivalent pressure ratio for growth of (In,Ga)As alloys using this source is considerably lower than values reported previously for growth using conventional As4 sources. Consequently, high-quality (In,Ga)As, (In,Al)As, and (In,Al,Ga)As alloys (and quantum wells made from these alloys) can be grown under the same growth conditions, i.e., substrate temperatures between about 525 °C and 540 °C and V/III pressure ratios between 10:1 and 15:1. Thick-film alloys and multiple-quantum-well structures grown under these conditions show superior structural and optical quality. Strong excitonic features are observed in the room-temperature absorption spectra of a number of multiple-quantum-well structures with well widths ranging from 30 A(ring) to 170 A(ring) . Calculations of the exciton transition energies using a simple empirical two-band model are in excellent agreement with experiment, even for a structure containing quantum wells in tensile strain in which the ordering of ground-state light- and heavy-hole excitons is reversed. The optical absorption spectrum of a 50-A(ring) -period (In,Ga)As/(In,Al)As superlattice shows room-temperature excitons involving electronic states at both the bottom and top of the minibands. Exciton line widths for these quantum-well structures, measured using low-temperature photoluminescence, are consistent with the limits imposed by random alloy fluctuations. We tentatively explain the lower optimum V/III pressure ratio for growth of (In,Ga)As in terms of the increase in kinetic energy of As4 molecules (compared with the kinetic energy of molecules from a conventional As4 source) and the consequent enhancement in the efficiency of dissociation of As4 molecules into As2 molecules at the growing surface.

Notizen: A theoretical model of the electro-optic properties of III–V multiple quantum well systems is compared to photocurrent spectrum measurements. Our technique, which is essentially free of adjustable parameters provides accurate estimates of both the absorption and refractive index far below the band edge. We have found that the proper inclusion of both inter-subband mixing effects and the angular dependence of the optical matrix elements is required to obtain satisfactory agreement with experiment. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We present a simple model for photocurrent spectroscopy of quantum-well p-i-n diodes that provides a quantitatively accurate desciption of the dependence of photocurrent on absorption coefficient and applied bias. The model incorporates the transit-time effect described previously [R. P. Leavitt and J. L. Bradshaw, Appl. Phys. Lett. 59, 2433 (1991)] as a limiting case. It also includes the two major effects of residual background doping in the intrinsic region of the diode: nonuniform electric fields, which affect the transport of carriers, and incomplete depletion at low electric fields, which reduces the amount of photocurrent collected. We show that the background-doping effect alone can mimic the transit-time effects: reduction in the overall carrier collection efficiency, saturation of photocurrent spectral features, and the presence of minima in photocurrent where absorption spectra show maxima. We obtain a closed-form expression for the photocurrent in the general case where both transit-time and background-doping effects are significant. Excellent agreement is obtained between model calculations and experimental room-temperature photocurrent spectra for an 89-period 100-A(ring) GaAs/100-A(ring) Al0.3Ga0.7As multiple-quantum-well diode, where the background doping density, the effective electron mobility, and the built-in potential are treated as adjustable parameters. The background doping density and the built-in potential obtained from the fit are in excellent agreement with independent measurements. We apply the model to predict the dependence of photocurrent on the intrinsic-region thickness of the diode. We also show a dramatic asymmetry between photocurrent spectra measured with light incident from the front and from the back of the diode, and we discuss the impact of this asymmetry on the performance of self-electro-optic-effect devices. We also find good agreement between the model predictions and the photocurrent results of Whitehead et al. [Appl. Phys. Lett. 52, 345 (1988)]. Further, our model qualitatively describes the dependence of the photoluminescence intensity on electric fields in multiple-quantum-well p-i-n diodes.

Notizen: The C 1s partial photoionization cross section and asymmetry parameter β of the C2H2 molecule have been determined with high-energy resolution between threshold and 360 eV. The C 1s shake-up satellite spectrum is richly structured; the cross section of several satellites increases strongly near threshold, which indicates that there is a conjugate contribution to their intensity. It is shown that the large enhancement in the total photoabsorption cross section between 305 and 320 eV, previously attributed to a σ* shape resonance, is largely due to this photon energy dependence of the shake-up transitions. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The local adsorption geometry of pyridine on Cu{110} has been determined quantitatively using photoelectron diffraction in the scanned-energy mode. At high coverages the molecule adsorbs nearly atop a Cu atom in the close-packed rows with a N–Cu bond length of 2.00 Å. Moreover, the Cu–N axis and the molecular (C2) axis are inclined by 8° and 20°, respectively, to the surface normal. The result shows that not only the adsorption site of the emitter (in this case the N atom) but also the position of relatively light scatterers (the C atoms) can be determined by photoelectron diffraction. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We report novel techniques for the scattering of laser light from plasmas to measure density and temperature. Subnanosecond laser pulses are used with fast optical streak cameras to monitor the dispersed scattered light. The spectra are recorded on photographic film. Time resolution down to 100 ps is obtained and stray light problems are eliminated so that the unshifted scattered light can be observed. The techniques have been used to measure densities in the range ne≈1016–1018 cm−3 and electron temperatures in the range Te≈5–35 eV with an accuracy of better than 10%. Laser pulses at 5265 A(ring) with an energy of about 10 J are used and give little plasma heating.
