Notes: [Auszug] DURING recent years we have been investigating the problem of biosynthesis of RNA in the nucleus of mammalian cells. The main method used was phenol fractionation of cellular RNA which permits the separation of the rapidly labelled RNA of the cell and isolation of its fractions. This article ...

Notes: Summary Introduced into the stomach of tuberculous patients together withvaniline hydraside of isonicotinic acid, HINA is absorbed, accumulated in the blood and excreted from the body in considerably smaller quantities than after its administration alone, approaching phthivazid by metabolism. This may be explained by the fact that in the body HINA forms hydrason (phthivazid) by combining with vanillin.

Notes: Summary Acute experiments were performed on dogs under morphine-urethane anesthesia. A study was made of the cardiac activity and dynamics of the ECGP wave with relation to the value of the mean arterial pressure and the rhythm of cardiac activity in prolonged stimulation of the peripheral section of divided vagus after inhibition disruption (vagus-escape). As demonstrated, in prolonged stimulation of the peripheral section of the vagus after vagus-escape the sinus rhythm appears with the frequency of cardiac contractions of 50–60 per minute and with the achievement of the mean arterial pressure of 70–80% of the initial level. The stable form of cardiac contractions thus established resembles the effect on the heart of the vaguscenter characterized by slowed down rhythm of cardiac activity with retention of large systolic blood volume, maintaining the mean arterial pressure at a sufficiently high level. Atrioventricular rhythm and artioventricular block were observed with a lower mean arterial pressure and a slower rhythm of cardiac contraction.

Notes: Summary A combined cannula for the gall bladder fistulization and its temporary isolation in chronic experiments on dogs is suggested. It may be recommended for studying absorption, excretion, etc. The cannula consists of elastic polyvinyl-chloride tube and a looplike obturator placed into an external protective aluminum or Plexiglas casing with a screwed-on cap. Temporary isolation is carried out by flection of the duct by pulling the obturator. During the rest of the time, the bile flows into the gail bladder without any obstruction. To collect the bile a cylindrical celluloid bile-receiver is screwed-on the protective casing.

Notes: Summary In chronic experiments on 4 dogs a study was made of the dynamics of the ECG T-wave with a rise of the vagus nerve tone; this was done for the purpose of indirect evaluation of the effect produced by the vagus on the metabolic processes in the cardiac muscle. The T-wave dynamics was studied in 2 dogs both in normal conditions and in experimental myocardial infarction. A rise of the vagus center tone was induced by subcutaneous injection of morphine, and a further rise of the tone was attained by intravenous administration of calcium chloride. With an increase of the tone of the vagus center in the intact dogs both the value and the direction of the T-wave changed. In dogs with experimental myocardial infarction T-wave changes resulted from rise of vagus center tone only on the 14th day after the ligation of the descending branch of the lefz coronary artery. On the basis of the data obtained it is suggested that the effect of the vagus nerves on metabolism is not shown until restoration of the functional state of the heart in myocardial infarction, although their inhibitory effect on the heart rate is already restored on the 5th–6th postoperative day.

Notes: Summary Chronic experiments were staged on 3 adult dogs. For a period of 3–6 months a study was made of the functional state of the respiratory center and dynamics of respiratory arrhythmia during increase of the vagus center tone induced by subcutaneous administration of low morphine doses and subsequent intravenous injection of calcium chloride. When the heart rate is slow there is a reduction of the frequency of respiratory motions; the least respiration rate corresponded to the least pulse rate. The coefficient of respiratory arrhythmia increased against the background of relatively slow respiration with a gradual slowing of cardiac contractions. Against the background of frequent respiration, sinus arrhythmia was not connected with respiration, notwithstanding the considerable reduction in pulse rate.

Notes: Abstract A rapid method for the quantitative analysis of the beryllium, boron and fluorine contents in concentration products, based on the use of the (α,n) reaction, is described. Po210 with an activity of 250 μ Cwas used as the α-radiation source. The number of neutrons in the concentration products knocked out by α-particles is recorded by a neutron counter and serves as a measure of the beryllium, boron, and fluorine content in the product analyzed. The method makes it possible to check the concentration products of beryllium, fluorite and boron ores, and also rich ores containing fluorine and boron, with an accuracy up to 1.5–2%. The content of the element checked can be determined in the presence of a constant amount of admixtures of other elements with a high(α,n) reaction yield.

Notes: Summary The paper gives a description of the design, and presents physical characteristics, of a capillary mercury-alkaline pick-up with air damping, as well as the procedure used in its operation. It is based upon the principle known as the “U effect”, and consists of a capillary tube filled with alternating columns of mercury, alkali, and air. Between each pair of adjoining drops (mercury, alkali) there are provided stops in the shape of penoplast plugs to raise the mechanical stability of the pick-up. The natural frequency of the pick-up may be within the range of 65–300 cycles per sec. The pick-up supplied with mechanical stops is stable and gives curves identical to those described in the literature.

Notes: Summary Thiry-Vella operation and angiostromy of the portal vein were performed in 3 dogs. The secretory and motor functions of the small intestine were studied in these animals; the content and the activity of cholinesterase in the arterial blood and the blood of the portal vein were investigated as well. After x-ray irradiation of dogs in a dose of 400 r the portal vein showed the presence, of acetylcholine which is absent in a fasting normal animal. The activity of cholinesterase in these conditions has considerably diminished, whereas the motor activity increased. Later, with the rise of the cholinesterase activity, acetylcholine was seen to disappear, and the motor intestinal function depressed These facts point to the relationship between disturbed intestinal motor function and the changes in the acetylcholine-cholinesterase system.
