Notizen: Abstract. This paper discusses the use of network analysis in the management of a large scale engineering project carried out within the R & D department of an engineering company. It describes the use of precedence diagrams and concludes that these are simpler to use than the more commonly encountered PERT nomenclature. This method has now been extended to cover other projects in the R & D department and it is concluded that their successful introduction has been encouraged by the interest and support of top management.

Notizen: SUMMARY– Most egg products are pasteurized in continuous-flow equipment, but small quantities are more economically processed in a vat pasteurizer. By insulating itself, the surface foam in the vat process may be below pasteurization temperature for a significant part of the holding time and salmonellae in the foam may survive. Using a 100-gal vat, we generated foams on 5 egg products and measured foam temperatures during pasteurization. Maximum jacket temperature was held to 160°F and no product burn-on was observed in the vat. All products were held above their respective pasteurization temperatures for 30 min. The minimum temperature of a 6.5-in. liquid whole egg foam was below pasteurization temperature for 11 min after start of pasteurization. The delayed heating effect of a 1-in. foam on sugared yolk (10% sucrose by weight) was 13 min. Yolk and salted yolk (10% salt by weight) foams were below liquid temperature during heating; however, in both cases liquid and foam reached pasteurization temperature simultaneously. Minimum temperature of plain egg white foam (pH 9.0) did not reach pasteurization temperature during the holding period. In vat pasteurization, the holding time begins when the liquid reaches pasteurization temperature, and the holding time should be long enough for both foam heating and pasteurization of foam. Except for egg white, about 15 min was required to heat foam to pasteurization temperature. Adding 15 min for pasteurization of the foam yielded a total holding time of 30 min, with the temperature of pasteurization established on the basis of the 15-min holding time for the foam as follows: liquid whole egg, 133°F; yolk and yolk blends, 135°F; sugared and salted yolk, 139°F. With egg white, foam heating times were in excess of 30 min, and vat pasteurization, with a holding time of 30 min, was not effective.

Notizen: Summary Effects of truncation selection of a primary trait upon genetic correlation between the primary trait and an unselected secondary trait were observed during 30 generations. Populations were 24 male and 24 female parents per generation randomly mated with replacement, the number of offspring set by intensity of selection. Each trait was controlled by genes with equal effects and complete dominance segregating independently from starting frequencies of 0.5 at each of 48 loci. Three levels each of genetic correlation, selection, and environmental variation were simulated. Genetic correlation decreased faster under more intense selection by lower than by upper truncation but behaved similarly in both by remaining near initial level when as many as one-half of the offspring were saved for parents. Truncation selection decreased genetic correlation in the offspring selected to be parents whether selection was by upper or lower truncation. Estimates of genetic correlation from covariances between phenotypes of parent and offspring were erratic for both directions of selection.

Notizen: Summary One of two quantitative traits was selected and correlated response in the other trait was measured in each of 30 generations for models of additive genes and of complete dominance. Each trait was controlled by 48 loci with equal effects, segregating independently from frequencies of 0.5 in the initial generation. Intensity of selection regulated the number of offspring from randomly mating 24 males and 24 females each generation. Three each of genetic correlations between traits, intensities of selection, and amounts of environmental variation were simulated. In the additive model correlated responses of the unselected trait to selection of the primary trait agreed closely with responses expected from theoretical considerations. In the model of complete dominance, responses of genotypic means of the unselected trait to selection of the primary trait in opposite directions were quite symmetrical for the first few generations but became distinctly asymmetrical in later generations. With little selection, response was fairly linear but became distinctly curvilinear as intensity of selection increased and environmental variance decreased. Between 15th and 30th generations some gains in the correlated trait to the 15th generation were lost.

Notizen: An outline is given of a method for dealing with curved boundaries in finite difference calculations (relaxation or other similar techniques) where the gradient normal to the boundary is specified. Fluid flow calculations using the velocity potential are typical of such problems and the flow round a circular cylinder is computed as an example. The method makes no approximation which is not made in the usual finite difference techniques, therefore accuracy at the boundary is as good as in the remainder of the field.
