Description: A multiple task research and development program was performed to improve the weight, life, and performance characteristics of hydrogen-oxygen alkaline fuel cells for advanced power systems. Development and characterization of a very stable gold alloy catalyst was continued from Phase I of the program. A polymer material for fabrication of cell structural components was identified and its long term compatibility with the fuel cell environment was demonstrated in cell tests. Full scale partial cell stacks, with advanced design closed cycle evaporative coolers, were tested. The characteristics demonstrated in these tests verified the feasibility of developing the engineering model system concept into an advanced lightweight long life powerplant.

Description: Experiments were performed to check the applicability of existing acoustic liner design procedures. The performance of three different liner configurations was tested in a duct containing three-dimensional wave motion and a one-dimensional mean flow past the liner surface. Both the local liner admittance and the overall wave attenuation provided by various liner-nozzle combinations were measured with sonic flow at the nozzle throat. The experimental data are compared with predictions from current theoretical analyses, and the comparison is used to evaluate the theories.

Description: The three dimensional nozzle admittance, an important parameter in combustion instability studies, was experimentally measured for several nozzle configurations. The admittance values were obtained using a modification of the classical impedance tube technique. The modified impedance tube method measures the admittance of a duct termination in the presence of one dimensional mean flow and three dimensional oscillations. Values of the nozzle admittance were obtained from pressure amplitude measurements taken at discrete points along the length of the tube. To determine the effects of nozzle geometry, nozzles were tested with half-angles of 15, 30, and 45 degrees and entrance Mach numbers of 0.08, 0.16, and 0.20. The admittance results are presented as functions of nondimensional frequency for mixed first tangential-longitudinal modes. These results are compared with available theoretical predictions and favorable agreement between theory and experiment is shown.

Description: Theoretical values of the admittances of various nozzles were computed and compared with the corresponding experimental values. The existing data reduction scheme was corrected and all available experimental data has been rechecked and corrected whenever necessary; the updated experimental admittance values are presented. An analysis associated with the frequency sensitivity of experimental admittance values was initiated and the analog-to-digital Data Reduction Program which has become operational is discussed. Fourteen nozzle tests were conducted during this report period.

Description: A multiple-task research and development program was performed to improve the weight, life, and performance characteristics of hydrogen-oxygen alkaline fuel cells for advanced power systems. During Phase 4, the lowest stabilized degradation rate observed in all the testing completed during four phases of the program, 1 microvolt/hour, was demonstrated. This test continues after 5,000 hours of operation. The cell incorporates a PPf anode, a 90Au/10Pt cathode, a hybrid frame, and a Fybex matrix. These elements were developed under this program to extend cell life. The result demonstrated that the 80Au/20Pt cathode is as stable as a 90Au/10Pt cathode of twice the precious metal loading, was confirmed in full-scale cells. A hybrid frame two-cell plaque with dedicated flow fields and manifolds for all fluids was demonstrated to prevent the cell-to cell electrolyte transfer that limited the endurance of multicell plaques. At the conclusion of Phase 4, more than 90,900 hours of testing had been completed and twelve different cell designs had been evaluated. A technology base has been established which is ready for evaluation at the powerplant level.

Description: Total vertical column amounts of stratospheric HCl, HF, ClONO2 and HNO3 are reported from high resolution infrared solar absorption spectra taken during the European Arctic Stratospheric Ozone Experiment (EASOE) in the winter of 1991-1992. These ground based measurements were made near Are in North Sweden (63.4 deg N, 13.1 deg E) at an altitude of 800 m using a Fourier transform spectrometer and tunable diode laser heterodyne spectrometer. On 9th January 1992 the HCl vertical column dropped to 1.2 x 10(exp 15) molecules/sq cm from a November average of 3.6 x 10(exp 15) molecules/sq cm. The HCl drop occurred at a time when Are was below the polar vortex and the lower stratospheric ClO column above Are was elevated to approximately 2 x 10(exp 15) molecules/sq cm as measured by the Microwave Limb Sounder experiment on the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite. These measurements indicate conversion of lower stratospheric chlorine from reservoir to chemically active forms.

Description: The software for configuring an LV counter processor system has been developed using structured design. The LV system includes up to three counter processors and a rotary encoder. The software for configuring and testing the LV system has been developed, tested, and included in an overall software package for data acquisition, analysis, and reduction. Error handling routines respond to both operator and instrument errors which often arise in the course of measuring complex, high-speed flows. The use of networking capabilities greatly facilitates the software development process by allowing software development and testing from a remote site. In addition, high-speed transfers allow graphics files or commands to provide viewing of the data from a remote site. Further advances in data analysis require corresponding advances in procedures for statistical and time series analysis of nonuniformly sampled data.

Description: As the possibility of stereo-controlled robots becomes a reality, the need to transmit the stereo pair of images to a ground station or space station for man-in-the-loop supervision will be a necessity. The complexity of transmitting stereo images by coding the preprocessed disparity is presently discussed. The approach demonstrates the quantization, modulation, and reconstruction of the stereo images. Results indicate the accuracy of reconstruction in terms of mean-square-error criterion as a function of the signal-to-noise ratio. Key research issues of interpolation from sparse disparity maps and reconstruction of the stereo pairs in the presence of spatial noise are presented. It is concluded that stereo reconstruction is possible, and the noise constraints are given.

Description: The performance characteristics of alkaline fuel cells to be used for space power systems were tested. Endurance tests were conducted on the cells during energy conversion operations. A feature of the cells fabricated and tested was the capability to evaporate the product water formed during the energy conversion reaction directly to space vacuum. A fuel cell powerplant incorporating these cells does not require a condenser and a hydrogen recirculating pump water separator to remove the product water. This simplified the fuel cell powerplant system, reduced the systems weight, and reduced the systems parasite power.
