    Notes: The influence of crystallization temperature on the melting behaviour and the morphology of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVF2) has been investigated. The DSC endotherms of PVF2 crystallized from the melt show at least two peaks. The peak areas depend on the thermal history of the samples and the heating scan rate. The area of the first peak was found to increase as the crystallization temperature or the scan rate increased. The double peak configuration was attributed to a melting-recrystallization process. Electron microscopy supports these results, for which only one type of lamella was found in the spherulitic structure.

    Notes: The influence of annealing conditions on the morphology and melting behaviour of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) was studied. PET annealed under isothermal conditions often shows double melting endotherms depending on the annealing temperature (Ta) and the heating rate of the calorimeter. It was found that the morphological structure and the lower melting peak depend strongly on the annealing temperature, Ta. The increase of the lower melting peak temperature with Ta is due to an increase of the lamellar thickness within the spherulitic structure and to a higher crystallite perfection.

    Notes: A detailed description of the morphology and the complex melting behaviour of poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) annealed in the range 80-228°C is presented. Double melting endotherms can be obtained by annealing PBT in a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The lower endotherm corresponds to the melting of crystalline material formed at the annealing temperature in addition to some of the crystallized material reorganized during the quenching process. The upper melting endotherm results from the melting of a fraction of the original crystalline material reorganized during the DSC scan. Electron microscopy showed that the spherulitic structure over a wide range of annealing temperature below the melting point is unchanged. At high annealing temperatures, such as 228°C, electron micrographs showed that the narrow high melting peak is associated with the melting of isolated single crystals grown at that temperature.

    Notes: In this study, we report the melting behavior of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVF2) annealed in a differential scanning calorimeter. PVF2 annealed under isothermal conditions often shows double or triple melting endotherms depending on the annealing temperature (Ta) and the heating rate. The lower melting peak temperature increases as Ta increases. When the annealing time is varied, there is a systematic increase in the size of the lower endotherms. This suggests that a portion of the main endothermic response is due to reorganization during the scan. Annealing PVF2 not only increases the degree of crystallinity, but also improves the crystal perfection. The ability of an annealing sample to reorganize decreases as the annealing time increases. However, an additional third melting peak appears when PVF2 is annealed at 140°C for a sufficiently long time. The existence of this peak suggests that more than one kind of distribution of crystal perfection may occur when PVF2 is quenched from the melt into liquid nitrogen and subsequently annealed.

    Description: The Southern Great Plains 1997 (SGP97) field experiment was conducted in Oklahoma during June-July 1997 to validate the models used for computing remote soil moisture using measurements by microwave radiometers. One of the objectives of SGP97 was to examine the effect of soil moisture on the evolution of the Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) and clouds over the Southern Great Plains (SGP) during the warm season. The LASE (Lidar Atmospheric Sensing Experiment) airborne DIAL (Differential Absorption Lidar) system, which was flown autonomously on the NASA ER-2 aircraft during previous missions, was reconfigured to fly on the NASA P3 research aircraft. During SGP97 LASE was used to study the morning evolution of the ABL, particularly as manifested in the development of the convective boundary layer, and to study the influence of soil moisture variations on the development of ABL. The ABL development is strongly influenced by the surface energy budget, which is in turn influenced by soil moisture, mesoscale meteorology, clouds, and solar insolation. LASE data acquired during this mission are being used to study the ABL water vapor budget, the development of the ABL, spatial and temporal variabilities in the ABL, and the meteorological factors that influence the ABL development. This field experiment also permitted comparisons of LASE water vapor measurements with water vapor profiles acquired by radiosondes launched at the DOE (Department of Energy) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Southern Great Plain (SGP) site and at NASA/Wallops Flight Facility, as well as with measurements from other SGP97 aircraft.

    Description: A NASA ER-2 aircraft flight with both Millimeter-wave Imaging radiometer (MIR) and lidar Atmospheric Sensing Experiment (LASE) was made over ocean areas in the eastern United States on September 25, 1995. The water vapor profiles derived from both instruments under both clear and cloudy conditions are compared in this paper. It is shown that good agreement is found between the MIR-derived and the LASE-measured water vapor profiles over the areas of clear-sky condition. In the cloudy areas, the MIR-retrieved values at the altitudes of the cloud layers and below are generally higher than those measured by the LASE.
