Description: Abstract : The peatland research station (MVSt), which evolved in 1877, had to deal with some difficulties as there existed neither technical literature nor agricultural experimental stations. The start was made by visiting settlers of the peatlands in nearby Teufelsmoor and in the Bourtanger Moor at the border between the Netherlands and Germany and asking them questions. Many chemical and physical analyses of peat soils and peat were also made and above all the staff of the MVSt had their own field tests running in different peatlands to get as much information as possible. Only 15-20 years later, the German raised bog cultivation („Deutsche Hochmoorkultur“) was able to replace what was harmful to the environment (peat smoke) and risky (night frost) burnt-over peatland culture. After drainage, liming and soil improvement with fertilizer the fields could be used successfully as arable land and/or grassland. Until the First World War countless bog settlements, which were efficient without manure, were established in Germany and later also abroad. After 1940 the use of deep ploughs to cultivate shallow raised bogs began with the MVSt. After the Second World War many thousands of hectare were cultivated by the deep plough up to 2.4m in the Emsland. There farmers from the East found a new home on the sand-mixed cultivations. The MVSt did substantial analyses about the micro climate and the hydrology of the peatlands and from 1975 onwards about the protection of mires as well. Since 1980 the problems of environmental protection were dealt with, for example the dynamics of heavy metals and erosion by wind. After the German Government released the concept for soil protection (1985) 70 agriculturally used fields were made permanent soil monitoring sites. The development and work of the former MVSt during the 131 years are summarized on annex 1 to 6.
Description: Zusammenfassung: Der Beginn der Moorversuchsstation (MVSt) im Jahre 1877 war schwer.

Description: During the coming two to three decades in Lower Saxony more and more raised-bog cutover fields (= Leegmoore), in sum about 30.000 ha, will be given back for other kinds of utilization after peat cutting is finished. According to the Peatland Conservation Programme of Lower Saxony these areas shall be protected by law and shall then be rewetted and renatured. Introductory in this article measured water balance data and ecohydrological perceptions derived therefrom are explained. As at present there are no growing raised bogs in northwestern Germany the original raised-bog surface morphology is described on the basis of the Topographical Maps 1:25.000 from the turn of the century and of the knowledge of the botanist C. A. WEBER (1901) who has convincingly elucidated the relationship between surface morphology, living vegetation, and peat accumulation. The described ecotechnical aspects are based on results of partly longterm field experiments which the author has won as Senior Officer at the Soil-technological Institute Bremen, on extensive experiences in consulting, as well as on many excursions and in discussions with collegues from Germany and foreign countries. Further, the experiences of agricultural engineering in applied flood irrigation have been used, especially with respect to the rewetting processes.

Description: In the beginning, the negative experiences by bog afforesting at the end of the 19th century are explained with the modern knowledge in peat research and agricultural engineering. In reference to the large forestry on peatlands in Finland, Canada and the USSR, recent afforestations and those with an age of 40-50 years are described. Then the experimental reforestation in Papenburg-Börgermoorweide is explained, and the resulting inferences are discussed.

Description: Von 186 natürlichen Gewässern im Flachland Niedersachsens liegen 48 % in Mooren und Anmooren.
Description: About 48 % of the 186 lakes and ponds in Lower Saxony are situated in peatlands and peaty soils. Also the three greatest lakes Steinhuder Meer, Dümmer and Zwischenahner Meer are surrounded by peatland. Since 1973 the law has provided that wet biotopes and moor waters be preserved and regenerated. A distinction is made between (deep) lakes and (shallow) ponds which have formed under natural conditions or were man-made. The important data on the water balance, such as input (rainfall and influx) and output (evaporation and discharge) are discussed. Additionally, the quality of water is discussed and thus, also, the assignment to limnologically defined types of lakes.

Description: Es wird kurz das Königsmoor bei Tostedt (Krs.
Description: The peatland area Koenigsmoor (between Hamburg and Bremen) is shortly described, the anthropogeneous development after the first drainage and cultivation (in 1905) from a raised bog to a today cultivated bog soil is explained. The measured groundwater data from 1950 to 1979 are figured as hydrograph (fig. 5). The positive and negative deviations from the average annual course is influenced by the weather. The former raised bog has been developed to a bog soil type with ground—water oxidation and reduction soil horizons. The mean ground-water amplitude (fig. 6) amounts today to 52 cm between the mean maximum in winter (= 59 cm below surface) and the mean minimum in summer (= 111 cm below surface). The field capacity of the raised-bog soil-profile today amounts still to about 70 volume percent water. From the pedohydrological viewpoint the term "dry laid" raised bog means that we can walk on the cultivated bog-soil surface by "dry shod".

Description: It had been informed on the foundation of the Deacony Freistatt in 1899 at a deserted, burned down raised bog and the development during one hundred years. In the Deacony Freistatt nearly 130000 persons (homeless persons, young pupils and passion patients) were taken care of (working as therapy). An area of nearly 400 ha raised bog after drainage and reclamation had been used as grassland and arable land. On about 190 ha raised bog had been peat mining by hand (Sphagnum peat and fuel peat). A Village arised in a park landscape. After 1990 the whole peatland had been carried over in a foundation for nature preservation and landscape maintenance.

Description: Some ecohydrological hints habe been given for the further formation of the nature conservation peatland Neustädter Moor (Southern Wietingsmoor, district Diepholz, Lower Saxony), especially upon the nescessity, to lead off harmlessly the surplus rainwater as surface run-off, upon the groundwater level and annual groundwater amplitudes in a growing optimal raised bog, upon levelling of industrial peat cutting bog (Leegmoor), and upon the establishment of peatland polders.

Description: Einleitend werden die geographischen Bedingungen der Gebirgsmoore beschrieben (Höhenlage, Topographie, Klima, Wasserhaushalt).
Description: Firstly the geographical conditions of raised bogs in the mountains are described (altitude, topography, climate, hydrological conditions). It is proved, that the gradient of the mire surface influences the soil water movement and thus the mire vegetation complex (tab. 2). Ecotechnical projects for mire rewetting and renaturalization must be geared to the mire surface slope (tab. 3). For a remaining block of raised bog peat in a cutting area, which has a small surface and a relatively great slope, a rewetting for renaturalization unsuccessful. In cut—over areas (Leegmoor) the surface can, with a mire excavator or mire bulldozer, be transformed horizontally or, depending on the gradient, levelled.

Description: The "Große Moor" near Gifhorn (Lower Saxony) has been selected as an example for a raised bog with groundwater influx. It has been shown that an existing groundwater influx into the sand subsoil (below the peatland) does not contribute to the water supply of the raised-bog vegetation, because the capillarity of the highly decomposed raised-bog peat is extremely small. It is well known that numerous raised bogs in northwest Europe exhibited rills at their surface(erosion grooves) caused by high runoff peaks. Therefrom it can be derived without difficulties that such raised bogs did not have any runoff retention worth mentioning. This is also confirmed by recent synchromesh records of rainfall, groundwater and stagnant water and runoff.
