Notizen: Abstract  In order to dissect the complex genetic system that controls pollen development, we have undertaken a program of transposon insertion mutagenesis, with the purpose of producing mutations in gametophytically acting genes that are important for this process. The present work reports the developmental cytology of one of the mutants isolated, gaMS-2 (gametophytic male sterile-2). A peculiar feature of the mutant grains was lack of differentiation between the vegetative and the generative nuclei, leading to alteration in number, conformation and placement of nuclei. At anthesis, the grains carrying the mutant allele are about 40% of the normal grain size, contain a very reduced amount of starch and exhibit various nuclear abnormalities.

Notizen: Abstract  Genetic factors controlling tolerance to the herbicide Alachlor in maize were localised by means of two different strategies. In the first approach, backcross (BC) plants, derived from pollen which had been subjected to selective pressure for resistance to the herbicide, were analysed for segregation distortion at 47 RFLP loci and compared to BC plants obtained from non-selected pollen. Preferential transmission of five chromosomal regions where putative QTLs (Quantitative Trait Loci) are localised was revealed in the BC plants from selected pollen. A second approach was based on a classical linkage analysis for segregation of the same set of RFLPs and factors controlling the trait, in a BC population of 210 individuals, by means of regression analysis. This study detected seven significant loci in four genomic regions. Overall, two loci revealed both segregation distortion and association with the expression of the trait, indicating linkage to genes expressed in both gametophytic and sporophytic phase. Three chromosomal regions appeared to carry factors involved in plant tolerance to Alachlor which are not expressed in pollen. Conversely, three loci were linked to factors selectable in pollen, but did not reveal significant association with tolerance in the plant in the segregating populations.

Beschreibung: Five species of the genus Schizotricha Allman, 1883, one of which is new to science, have been studied.\nThe material originates from the Weddell Sea region and from off Elephant Island and it was collected during several antarctic expeditions with the R.V. Tolarstern\'. Each species is described and figured and its systematic position among allied species discussed. The type material of Schizotricha glacialis (Hickson & Gravely, 1907) and S. turqueti Billard, 1906 has been re-examined and is also described and figured.

Beschreibung: The type series of Schizotricha anderssoni J\xc3\xa4derhoim, 1904, collected by the Swedish Antarctic Expedition 1901-1903 and deposited in the collections of the Swedisch National Museum, Stockholm, is redescribed. The type series is composed of two species, the species figured by J\xc3\xa4derhoim (1905) is designated the lectotype of Schizotricha anderssoni. The second species, differing from the other species of the genus, is described as Schizotricha jaederholmi spec. nov.

Beschreibung: The material assigned by Totton (1930) to Oswaldella antarctica (Jaderholm, 1904) and O. bifurca (Hartlaub, 1904) has been re-examined and redescribed. This material shows such important differences with Hartlaub\'s and J\xc3\xa4derholm\'s species and the remaining species of Oswaldella that they are here considered as two new species: O. terranovae spec. nov. and O. tottoni spec, nov., respectively.

Beschreibung: The type material of Oswaldella billardi Briggs, 1938, has been re-examined and a complete description and figures are presented. The study of that material has allowed to reconsider the systematic position of all the material previously assigned to O. billardi and to determine that part of it belongs to another species. Since it is clearly different from the remaining species of the genus, it is described as Oswaldella erratum spec. nov.\nResumen: Se ha revisado y redescrito el material tipo de Oswaldella billardi Briggs, 1938.
