Notizen: Abstract Daily averaged tilt component data from two sites of the Central Apennines (Italy) and of the Southern Caucasus (Georgia), respectively, revealed intermediate-term tilts as possible precursors to earthquakes (M=3.0÷4.7) which occurred in the above-mentioned seismic areas within a distance of 50 km from the sites. A good temporal correlation as well as a fair spatial correspondence between these residual tilts (with amplitude and duration of some microradians and months, respectively) and main shocks were pointed out, by removing both secular trends and seasonal thermoelastic effects from the raw tilts. An attempt was made to justify the above-mentioned results, based on the assumption that the observed intermediate-term preseismic tilts are the manifestation of aseismic creep episodes of comparable duration in the fault materials of thrust faults close to the tilt sites. The mechanism refers to a strain field slowly propagating from the preparation focal area to the tilt site, through crustal blocks separated by weak transition zones. This propagation is thought to be the cause of the local aseismic fault slip recorded by the tiltmeters. Previously, both discrete structures and strain propagation effects were revealed in the Central Apennines and are thought also to exist in the Southern Caucasus. As in the past, the rheological properties of fault materials are revealed as viscoelastic ones. In fact, creep equations obtained by applying several viscoelastic models on our data, proved to fit quite well some of the observed tilt precursors, producing viscosity and rigidity values very similar to those reported in literature.

Notizen: Abstract Prototype instrumentation, able to automatically measure groundwater radon content variations, is presented. The equipment is made of stainless steel and has spherical valves with automatic and pneumatic control. The deemanation of the gases from the water is obtained by evacuating a suitable expansion chamber. The instrumentation can make discrete sampling ranging from 1 per hour to 1 per 99 hours. The equipment was tested in the laboratory: the efficiency was measured by means of a266Ra solution. A mean value of (0.65±0.07) count/s/Bq was obtained. A calibration test was carried out by comparing countings from the automatic equipment with those obtained by the standard laboratory cell. Results of an operational check over a period of approximately one year indicate that variations in radon at the calibration site are attributable more to meteorological than to tectonic causes.

Beschreibung: The present note shows that the rock mass under stress and strain generates an ELF and VLF emission (EME) associated to the fracturing phenomena. On uniaxial stress this emission show two different modes. A disorderly succession of clustering EM pulses (DIS) is associated with the acoustics emission of fracturing. It is always manifested, culminates with the rupture and begins just before the 50% of the time necessary to break the rock with an constant increasing stress. In some cases, this phenomenon is preceded by a more orderly and homogeneous sequence of pulses EM (OIS), in this case not associated with the acoustics. The presence of water saturation influences the DIS EM emission. From our experimental observations results that the emission in the ELF and VLF bands is independent from the type of rock, which however condition the deformation history, and form the structural characteristics of the material. In a quarry have observed a similar phenomenon also on large stone masses under strain. These characteristics of the EME may be observed at great distances to monitor the preparation of an Earthquake; in fact radio waves as well as acoustic waves have their maximum propagation at the low frequency band.

Beschreibung: In this study we show that ELF-VLF emissions, occurred during the fracturing of rocks in laboratory experiments and during rock extraction in a cave, have been recorded also before earthquakes by 3 ELF-VLF stations installed in the central Apennines. The electric field emission is composed by two types of signals which are related to the evolution of micro-fractures within the rocks. During two years of monitoring, from August 2003 to September 2005, we recorded three signals, which all have frequency band and characteristics similar to the signal recorded during the fracturing of rocks in the laboratory and during the extraction of rocks. All these signals occurred a few days before the occurrence of M ≥ 4.5 earthquakes in the surrounding region (100-300 km). May be EM precursors of the earthquakes ?

Beschreibung: Since 1987 multichannel instrumentation has been recording electromagnetic and seismoacoustic emissions in the Amare cave (Gran Sasso í L'Aquila). Equipment detecting RMC (Principality of Monaco) longwave broadcasting (216 kHz) has been operating in the same place. Data collected during this period have pointed out two different phenomena called «quiet» and «perturbed» that characterize the normal behaviour of the cave. On 25 August 1992 an earthquake with M = 3.9 occurred in the Gran Sasso area and on 4 June 1993 an earthquake with M = 4.3 occurred in Umbria, 100 km to north of the Amare cave. Before these earthquakes, electromagnetic, seismoacoustic, and RMC data showed anomalies. Here we present the observed phenomenology and discuss the possibility that the anomalies can be considered precursors of the earthquakes.
