Notizen: Abstract Under laboratory conditions (L16:D8, 24°C, r.h. 80%), applying of an ecdysone agonist, RH 5849, (1,2-dibenzoyl-1-tert-butylhydrazine) onto final instar larvae of Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.), Noctuidae, Lepidoptera, delayed or advanced the time of pupation depending on the time of treatment. This response was dose-dependent. In addition, non-lethal doses of RH 5849, ranging from 0.05 to 10 µg/larva were used. Following treatment of S. littoralis larvae with 5 µg RH 5849 the endogenous ecdysteroid level was increased or decreased depending on the time of application. Based on the results presented, we suggest that potential users of non-steroidal ecdysone agonists should consider the proper circadian timing of application in the field.

    Thema: Biologie
Notizen: Abstract Toxicity assays indicated that when diflubenzuron (DFB) was topically applied on larvae of the Egyptian cotton leafworm, Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval), and the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Hübner), estimated LD50 values were similar, reaching 0.47 and 0.44 ng/larva, respectively. This study evaluated the importance of the rate of uptake and excretion, and of enzymatic metabolism in building up an insecticidal toxicity after topical application on the insect cuticle in both species. In general, penetration of DFB in S. littoralis was about 2-fold higher than in S. exigua, whereas metabolic breakdown was of minor importance in S. littoralis as compared with S. exigua. The current data indicate the importance of cuticle penetration and discuss that extrapolation from oral feeding toxicity results to topical toxicity data should be evaluated with caution, especially for insect growth regulators used in integrated pest management.

    Thema: Biologie
Notizen: Abstract Larvae of the Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), that were orally treated with RH-0345 at 0.1 mg l−1, RH-5849 at 10 and 50 mg l−1, tebufenozide at 2 g l−1, and 20-hydroxyecdysone at 2 g l−1, showed symptoms of premature moulting, followed by inhibition of ecdysis. In addition, fresh weight gain and total protein content were blocked. The effects on haemolymphal and cuticular polypeptides after PAGE were linked with premature, new epicuticle deposition as was observed under the electron microscope. These observations support the concept that the ecdysteroid-mimicking action of the three nonsteroidal molecules is specific.
