    Notes: Abstract The dissociation constants Kd of triethylammonium picrate have been determined from conductimetric measurements in nitrobenzene (NB) and in ortho-dichlorobenzene (ODCB) with and without pyridines being used as ligands. In the absence of any ligand, the enhancement of the dissociation in NB as compared with that in ODCB cannot be explained solely by the increase of the dielectric constant, but shows the existence of specific interactions of the former solvent with the ions. The results obtained in the presence of ligands are consistent with the formation of a 1:1 cation-pyridine hydrogen-bonded complex. The constantk 1 + for the formation of theis complex has been determined for six substituted pyridines in both solvents. Logk 1 + varies linearly with the Hammett parameter σH of the substituent. The slope ρ of the Hammett relation is −1.86 in NB and −2.90 in ODCB. The difference can be ascribed to specific interactions between NB and the pyridines which become stronger when the pyridine is more basic.

    Notes: Abstract We have studied, by conductivity measurements, the formation of hydrogenbonded complexes between imidazoles and ions in the three systems triethylammonium picrate (Et3NHPic)+imidazole (Im), triethylammonium bromide (Et3NHBr)+Im, and Et3NHPic+1-methylimidazole (1-MeIm) in nitrobenzene in order to specify the importance of the two functions of the imidazole molecule, the tertiary nitrogen N3, and the imino group N1-H. While 1-MelIm forms only a single complex with the cationic species Et3NH+, imidazole enters into specific interactions as well with the cations through its basic site N3 and with the anions through its imino group. The complexing of the anions by imidazole, always weaker than the complexing of the cations, is more effective for Br− than for Pic−. Moreover, if imidazole is used as ligand, a 1:2 complex is formed between the cation and the imidazole, in which the second molecule of imidazole is bonded to the N-H group of the first by a hydrogen bond at the tertiary N atom. We did not observe a correlation between the equilibrium constants K 1 + for the complexing of the cation Et3NH+ by imidazole and pyridines (k 1 + for pyridine, 3–4 dimethylpyridine, and imidazole are 8, 24, and 165, respectively) and the pK a values of these ligands due to the fundamental difference in the structure of the imidazole and pyridine molecules, although both are considered as aromatic nitrogen bases.

    Notes: Summary Systolic time intervals, including preejection period (PEP) and left ventricular ejecion time (LVET), were studied in patients with permanent essential hypertension before and after intra-venous administration of propranolol 0.2 mg/kg (11 patients), clonidine 0.002 mg/kg (10 patients) and methyldopa 2 mg/kg (12 patients). With propranolol, diastolic blood pressure was unchanged and the heart rate decreased, whilst PEP and LVET were significantly prolonged (P〈0.001). Clonidine caused a fall in blood pressure (P〈0.001), heart rate was slightly reduced, PEP was prolonged (P〈0.001) and there was a significant decrease in LVET at 5 min. With methyldopa, no significant effect was observed after intravenous injection, but 7 days oral administration produced the identical effect as clonidine. These observations suggest that certain antihypertensive drugs may impair left ventricular performance and depress myocardial contractility.
