Description: We present a high resolution magnetic anomaly map of the Tyrrhenian Sea obtained by processing the data acquired by ISMAR-CNR during two cruises in 1996 and 1999, and in the Aeolian area since 2002. The morphology and geological setting of this Tortonian back-arc basin has been extensively studied and highlighted since 1960, keeping on pace with technological advancements for newer insights. The availability of swath multibeam systems enabled a significant jump in the knowledge of the basin. A full bathymetric coverage was obtained from the upper slope to the bathyal plain along with 60000 km of magnetic, gravimetric and seismic data. We present the results of the processing of the magnetic data. Standard techniques were applied (de-spiking, filtering, IGRF and pole reduction, heading effects and crossover errors analysis), producing an image at the resolution of 1km at the basin scale, and better in shallower areas. Significant insight was obtained for poorly investigated areas, mainly to the North (Montecristo Basin) , other than a better detail on the submarine volcanic structures in the Central and South East portions of the basin. The data were also integrated with new CNR and INGV acquisition in the Panarea-Stromboli area (2002 to 2006). We present also a time-lapse study on the Panarea gas exhalation area, suggesting a clear relationship between the magnetic properties and gas flux variations in time.

Description: Inversion of new high-resolution magnetic data from the Marsili seamount and the surrounding basin in the Tyrrhenian Sea reveals NNE–SSW magnetization stripes ranging from the Matuyama chron to the Brunhes chron, including the short positive Jaramillo subchron. The detailed magnetic chronology shows that from the late Matuyama (1.77 Ma), the average half spreading rate was about 1.5 cm yr-1, with a slight decrease between the Jaramillo and the Brunhes events, when the growth of the volcanic edifice overcame lateral spreading. Analysis of spreading rate and volume of erupted lava indicates that at the beginning of the Jaramillo subchron (1.07 Ma), the Marsili basin evolved from pure horizontal spreading to a superinflated seamount as a consequence of tearing of the Ionian slab. Our data give us a snapshot of the geodynamic transition from an active backarc spreading phase to the vertical accretion of the seafloor because of a radical change in the subduction dynamics.

Description: We present the shipboard activities and preliminary results of Cruise PANSTR10((2010-02-05 2010-02-15)) with R/V Urania. The cruise was scheduled to acquire high resolution magnetometric and gravimetric data on the Panarea and Stromboli volcanic edifices. In addition to this, swath bathymetry and CTD casts were obtained, and five OBS were launched N of Alicudi and on the lineament Stromboli-Marsili, aiming at collecting active and passive seismological data in the Aeolian and Calabrian Arcs.
