    Description: Research on the primary cosmic radiation and solar cosmic rays from the Luna 10, 11, and 12 artificial lunar satellites is reviewed. Data on the vertical distribution of cosmic rays above the moon's surface are presented, and the albedo for the primary radiation is determined. The fluxes of electrons with energies from 30 to 300 keV were registered in the solar cosmic rays. Rapid variations of the electron flux were observed. The angular distributions of 0.5-10 MeV protons moving together with the corpuscular streams responsible for Forbush decreases were investigated.

    Description: Results of an analysis and interpretation of a 3-A electron density map of yeast phenylalanine transfer RNA. Some earlier detailed assignments of nucleotide residues to electron density peaks are found to be in error, even though the overall tracing of the backbone conformation of yeast phenylalanine transfer RNA was generally correct. A new, more comprehensive interpretation is made which makes it possible to define the tertiary interactions in the molecule. The new interpretation makes it possible to visualize a number of tertiary interactions which not only explain the structural role of most of the bases which are constant in transfer RNAs, but also makes it possible to understand in a direct and simple fashion the chemical modification data on transfer RNA. In addition, this pattern of tertiary interactions provides a basis for understanding the general three-dimensional folding of all transfer RNA molecules.

    Description: Experiments were conducted to examine in detail the influence of surface tension gradient induced flow, the Marangoni effect. One set of studies provided visual results that demonstrated the occurrence and magnitude of the Marangoni effect. Another portion of the work was directed to bubble force measurements. These studies used in deflection of a very fine cantilevered wire with an attached bubble as a means of measuring force with and without temperature gradients. The experimental force data were found to check existing theoretical predictions reasonably well except for the case where the test fluid had a sizeable vapor pressure. In this situation the thermophoretic force on the bubble was much higher than predicted.

    Description: The thermal and structural performance of a large panel of LI-1542 reusable surface insulation tiles was determined by a series of cyclic heating tests using radiant lamps and aerothemal tests in the Langley 8-foot high-temperature structures tunnel. Aerothermal tests were conducted at a free-stream Mach number of 6.6, a total temperature of 1830 K, Reynolds numbers of 2.0 and 4,900,000 per meter, and dynamic pressures of 29 and 65 kPa. The results suggest that pressure gradients in gaps and flow impingement on the header walls at the end of longitudinal gaps are sources for increased gap heating. Temperatures higher than surface radiation equilibrium temperature were measured deep in gaps and at the header walls. Also, the damage tolerance of the LI-1542 tiles appears to be very high. Tile edge erosion rate was slow; could not be tolerated in a shuttle application. Tiles soaked with water and subjected to rapid depressurization and aerodynamic heating showed no visible evidence of damage.

    Description: A high frequency oscillator, having both good short and long term stability, is formed by including a piezoelectric crystal in the base circuit of a first bi-polar transistor circuit, the bi-polar transistor itself operated below its transitional frequency and having its emitter load chosen so that the input impedance, looking into the base thereof, exhibits a negative resistance in parallel with a capacitive reactance. Combined with this basic circuit is an auxiliary, complementary, second bi-polar transistor circuit of the same form with the piezoelectric crystal being common to both circuits. By this configuration small changes in quiescent current are substantially cancelled by opposite variations in the second bi-polar transistor circuit, thereby achieving from the oscillator a signal having its frequency of oscillation stable over long time periods as well as short time periods.

    Description: The results of a thermal-structural test program to verify the performance of a metallic/radiative Thermal Protection System (TPS) under reentry conditions are presented. This TPS panel is suitable for multiple reentry, high L/D space vehicles, such as the NASA space shuttle, having surface temperatures up to 1200 C (2200 F). The TPS panel tested consists of a corrugation-stiffened, beaded-skin TD Ni-20Cr metallic heat shield backed by a flexible fibrous quartz and radiative shield insulative system. Test conditions simulated the critical heating and aerodynamic pressure environments expected during 100 repeated missions of a reentry vehicle. Temperatures were measured during each reentry cycle; heat-shield flatness surveys to measure permanent set of the metallic components were made every 10 cycles. The TPS panel, in spite of localized surface failures, performed its designated function.
