Abstract Storage capacity-discharge relationships have been derived. These relationships can be used to predict the maximum storage capacity for the storage structures in subsurface drainage systems. Practical applications have been dealt with using field data representing situations in Indo-Gangetic Plains of India. Though the relationships can be useful for designing either a sump or an evaporation pond, it is inferred that the relationships developed are most effective in calculating the storage capacity of an evaporation pond. Conversely, with some trial and error, the relationships can also be used to calculate the area which can be commanded by an evaporation pond of a given capacity.
