Beschreibung: A nonlinear, unsteady, small-disturbance theory capable of predicting inviscid transonic flows about aerodynamic configurations undergoing both rigid body and elastic oscillations was developed. The theory is based on the concept of dividing the flow into steady and unsteady components and then solving, by method of local linearization, the coupled differential equation for unsteady surface pressure distribution. The equations, valid at all frequencies, were derived for two-dimensional flows, numerical results, were obtained for two classses of airfoils and two types of oscillatory motions.

Beschreibung: Procedures based on the method of local linearization and transonic equivalence rule were developed for predicting properties of transonic flows about certain classes of wing-body combinations. The procedures are applicable to transonic flows with free stream Mach number in the ranges near one, below the lower critical and above the upper critical. Theoretical results are presented for surface and flow field pressure distributions for both lifting and nonlifting situations.

Beschreibung: Theoretical analysis and associated computer programs were developed for predicting properties of transonic flows about certain classes of wing-body combinations. The procedures used are based on the transonic equivalence rule and employ either an arbitrarily-specified solution or the local linerization method for determining the nonlifting transonic flow about the equivalent body. The class of wind planform shapes include wings having sweptback trailing edges and finite tip chord. Theoretical results are presented for surface and flow-field pressure distributions for both nonlifting and lifting situations at Mach number one.

Beschreibung: This code solves the two-dimensional, transonic, small-disturbance equations for flow past lifting airfoils in both free air and various wind-tunnel environments by using a variant of the finite-difference method. A description of the theoretical and numerical basis of the code is provided, together with complete operating instructions and sample cases for the general user. In addition, a programmer's manual is also presented to assist the user interested in modifying the code. Included in the programmer's manual are a dictionary of subroutine variables in common and a detailed description of each subroutine.

Beschreibung: Large-scale fluctuations in the solar wind plasma upstream of the heliospheric termination shock (TS) will cause inward and outward motions of the shock. Using numerical techniques, we extend an earlier strictly one-dimensional (planar) analytic gas dynamic model to spherical symmetry to investigate the features of global behavior of shock motion. Our starting point is to establish a steady numerical solution of the gasdynamic equations describing the interaction between the solar wind and the interstellar medium. We then introduce disturbances of the solar wind dynamic pressure at an inner boundary, and follow the subsequent evolution of the system, especially the motion of the termination shock. Our model solves spherically symmetric gasdynamic equations as an initial-boundary value problem. The equations in conservative form are solved using a fully implicit Total Variation Diminishing (TVD) upwind scheme with Roe-type Riemann solver. Boundary conditions are given by the solar wind parameters on an inner spherical boundary, where they are allowed to vary with time for unsteady calculations, and by a constant pressure (roughly simulating the effect of the local interstellar medium) on an outer boundary. We find that immediately after the interaction, the shock moves with speeds given by the earlier analogous analytic models. However, as the termination shock propagates it begins to slow down, seeking a new equilibrium position. In addition, the disturbance transmitted through the TS, either a shock or rarefaction wave, will encounter the heliopause boundary and be reflected back. The reflected signal will encounter the TS, causing it to oscillate. The phenomenon may be repeated for a number of reflections, resulting in a "ringing" of the outer heliosphere.

Beschreibung: An evaluation is made of a perturbation method devised to obtain highly accurate approximations to families of strongly nonlinear solutions which are either continuous or discontinuous, and which represent variations in some arbitrary parameter. The method first defines a unit perturbation by using two nonlinear solutions which differ from one another by a nominal change in some geometric or flow parameter, then employs this unit perturbation to predict a family of related nonlinear solutions over a range of parameter variation. Coordinate straining is incorporated into this perturbation method for determining the unit perturbation to account for the movement of discontinuities and maxima of high-gradient regions due to the perturbation. Attention is given to transonic and subsonic flows. Comparisons of the perturbation results with the corresponding 'exact' nonlinear solutions show a remarkable accuracy and range of validity of the perturbation method across the spectrum of examples considered.
