    Notes: The electron density and the molecular electrostatic potential of the β-carbolines are studied using ab initio STO-3G wave functions. The analysis was done from the point of view of a previous model built with monoamine oxidase substrates and irreversible inhibitors. The results confirm the usefulness of the model and make it possible to propose new precision to the molecular electrostatic potential patterns needed to have monoamine oxidase inhibitory activity.

    Notes: Squeezed states are normally studied in configuration space or using the Glauber formalism for the coherent states. Here we show that the use of the Fock-Bargmann space can lead to more general solutions, especially in the case of squeezed states associated with the square of field amplitude. The relations that we obtain are completely general and several well-known, approximate results can be obtained as the limit cases of our approach.© 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Similarities and differences between mitochondrial monoamine oxidase (MAO) substrates and inhibitors (both A and B types) are considered, studying quantitatively two molecular properties: electron density and molecular electrostatic potential (MEP). The following molecules are considered: substrates: PHEA, BZA, tele-N-methyl-histamine, phenylethanolamine, phenylpropylamine, tryptamine, dopamine, phenoxylethylamine, noradrenaline, serotonin, and p-nitro-phenylethanolamine; inhibitors: Deprenil, Clorgyline, and Lilly 51641 (only the moiety involved in the A-B differentiation is considered). The wave functions needed to calculate the analyzed properties are of ab initio quality, and have been calculated in analogous conformations, all near the energetic minima. Electron densities distributions are qualitatively compared by means of a correlation coefficient defined over the whole space. Otherwise, patterns of the possible zones of electrostatic interactions are described by means of the distances and angles between minima, in order to differentiate MAO-A and MAO-B substrates. The results reproduce efficiently the experimental classification and enable us to predict the type of enzymatic action of molecules not yet experimentally classified.

In this work we outline a unifying formulation that contains as special cases both phenomena.     Description: An analysis and sample results for the lateral buckling and vibration of a compressively loaded column is presented whose cross section is piecewise constant along its length. The column is symmetric about its mid-span and consists of three sections, the center section having a stiffer cross section than the two identical end sections. Buckling and vibration characteristics of the column are determined from numerical solution of the exact eigenvalue problems. Parametric structural efficiency analyses are performed using a nondimensionalized set of governing equations to determine the optimum ratio between the lengths of the center section and the outer sections based on both buckling load and vibration frequency requirements. In these analyses, two relationships exist. One is between cross-sectional mass and the cross section, and the other is a high-efficiency scheme. The effect of axial load on vibration frequency is also examined and compared with that of a uniform column.

    Description: Future in-space construction and assembly facilities will require the use of space cranes capable of supporting and manipulating large and massive loads. The large size of the space components being considered for construction will require that these cranes have a reach on the order of 100 meters. A space crane constructed from an erectable four-longeron truss beam with 19 5-sq-m truss bays is considered. This concept was selected to be compatible with the Space Station truss. This truss is hinged at three locations along its bottom edge and attached at one end to a rotary joint cantilevered to the assembly depot's main truss structure. The crane's boom sections are rotated by extensible longeron actuators located along the top edge of the beam. To achieve maximum position maneuvering capability for the crane requires that the individual sections be capable of rotating 180 degrees about the hinge point. This can only be accomplished by offsetting the hinges from the longeron axes. Since offset hinges introduce bending moments in the truss members, an analysis of the effect of hinge offsets on the load-carrying capacity of the structure is required. The objective of the static finite element analysis described is to determine the effect of various offset lengths on the overall bending stiffness of the crane and on the maximum stresses.

    Description: The status and some recent developments of continuum modeling for large repetitive lattice structures are summarized. Discussion focuses on a number of aspects including definition of an effective substitute continuum; characterization of the continuum model; and the different approaches for generating the properties of the continuum, namely, the constitutive matrix, the matrix of mass densities, and the matrix of thermal coefficients. Also, a simple approach is presented for generating the continuum properties. The approach can be used to generate analytic and/or numerical values of the continuum properties.

    Description: A simplified preliminary design capability for erectable precision segmented reflectors is presented. This design capability permits a rapid assessment of a wide range of reflector parameters as well as new structural concepts and materials. The preliminary design approach was applied to a range of precision reflectors from 10 meters to 100 meters in diameter while considering standard design drivers. The design drivers considered were: weight, fundamental frequency, launch packaging volume, part count, and on-orbit assembly time. For the range of parameters considered, on-orbit assembly time was identified as the major design driver. A family of modular panels is introduced which can significantly reduce the number of reflector parts and the on-orbit assembly time.

    Description: Flaw growth behavior in roll diffusion bonded and adhesive bonded 2219-T87 aluminum alloy was compared to that in monolothic 2219-T87. Based on tests at 40 KSI cyclic stress, for equivalent cyclic life, a .004 interlayer laminate can tolerate a surface flaw twice as wide as in monolithic material, or provide an 8% weight saving by operating at higher stress for the same initial flaw. Roll diffusion bonded material with three structural plies of 2219-T87 and two interlayers of 1100 aluminum was prepared with interlayer thicknesses of .004, .007 and .010 in. Total laminate thickness was .130 in. The .004 interlayer laminate was most effective and gave better results than monolithic material at 40 and 48 ksi. Adhesive bonded specimens were fabricated of three sheets of 2219-T87 aluminum alloy bonded with METLBOND 329 adhesive. Adhesive bonded specimens gave longer lives to failure than diffusion bonded specimens at 40 ksi the diffusion bonded material was superior. Flaws initiated in one ply of the laminate grew to the edges of the specimen in that ply but did not propagate into adjacent plies.
